Reading Student Survey
School: Barbers Point ElementaryGrade Level: 3rd Number of students: 26

10 question survey8 of the questions were administered through the
4 corners game.Each question were read out loud then students
went to the labeled corner (A,B,C,D) that fits their answer.
I tallied how many students were present in each corner with the help of my mentor teacher (*3 students’ answer were taken out due to denied media release form).
Students were given a post it note to answer the other 2 questions that had more than 4 options. Each student were allowed to pick 2

AttitudeSummary
Majority of the students likes reading or is okay with reading. However, majority of them doesn’t consider reading as a leisure but to learn new information and for achieving good grades in school.
When reading out loud, more than half thinks it’s just okay.
AnalysisAbout 56% likes
reading and thinks reading is for learning new things.
1 % does not like reading while 39% thinks reading is okay.
Many students likes reading but when it comes to reading out loud in class, it’s a different story.
ImplementationI want students to think of reading as not only to
learn new information or getting good grades but also as a good leisure. In order to show students that reading is fun, I will need
to model during their silent reading or D.E.A.R. time where I bring my own book and read as well. This will show them a good example of how you can enjoy reading a book.
For the students that said they dislike reading or it’s okay, I need to create a reading assignment that is engaging in order to elicit a positive attitude from the students about reading. This reading lesson will improve students’ attitude toward reading.

Learning StyleSummary:
More than half of the class read at home while the rest only read at home sometimes.
A little over half of the class prefers to read on their own while the rest prefers to read with someone or with a group.
Most of the students also like to read in a quiet place.
Analysis:About 65% expressed
that they read at home and about 30 % said they only read sometimes.
52% likes to read by themselves and 47% would read with someone or with a group.
69% prefers to read in a place where it’s quiet.
ImplementationFrom the data, about half of the class prefers
to read by themselves while the other half prefers with someone or with a group. To accommodate each of the students preference, the readings that will be done in the class will consist of a mixture of reading on their own and reading with someone or with a group.
Since majority of the class prefers reading in a quiet place, I will make sure that the class environment is peaceful in order for the students to feel comfortable.

Interest Summary
Based on the data collected, there is a range variety of topics that students are interested in reading.
As far as picking the book, most of the students based it off on the front cover or the first few pages of the book to see if it’s interesting to them.
AnalysisThe most popular topic
was adventure books with 11 students.
Sports and scary stories tied with students’ level of interest.
There were about 12 students that read the first few pages of a book in order to see if it interest them.
ImplementationSince the class has a wide range of topics that
seems interesting to them, I will incorporate different topics in order to engage each student. Having a variety of different topics is great because the reading wouldn’t be so boring since it involves different topics.

Work HabitsSummary
Majority of the students tend to work on their reading assignment right away instead of waiting till its due.
Most of the students sometimes track when reading.
AnalysisAbout 74% of the
students does not put off their reading homework until last minute.
56% of the class expressed that they only track sometimes when reading.
ImplementationSince majority of the class has a good habit of
doing their reading homework right away, I need to have a class discussion to have these students share the benefits of doing their reading homework early in order for the other students to fall into this good habit as well.
As for tracking while reading, it is acceptable that students only track sometimes. However, two of the students that said sometimes were part of the lower reading level, so I would encourage these two students to track more in order to help them with their reading.
Work Habits
After gathering data from this reading student survey, I gained more knowledge about the students that I am working with. It made me aware of their attitude, interest, learning style and work habits toward reading. These information will help me modify my lessons in order to accommodate each of the learners in my class.
