Vol. IV Important Reminders >>>
Planning to graduate in Summer 2015?
The deadline to complete the application to graduate is Friday, May 22nd.
Summer Commencement Ceremonies will take place Sunday, August 2nd through Tuesday, August 4th.
Salutations SSS Students! Congratulations on getting through Spring‘ 15!
Welcome to the start of summer! For
some of you, this means the beginning of
summer classes, vacation or like myself
transitioning into your professional career.
In any of the circumstances, you deserve
to be congratulated on getting through the
Spring 2015 semester!
It has truly been a blessing working at the
Student Support Services (SSS) program
for the last four years. In the same way
that I have grown and matured, I have
seen many of you evolve and successfully
overcome challenges you faced through
your college career. I can assure you that
the sacrifices that you have made will
pay off in the end!
My advice as a recent graduate is to
make the most of your time in college.
Through my experience, I can say that
you reap what you sow. Build
relationships with people that you can
leverage after college. If you are not a
person fit to join a sorority or fraternity,
like myself, join a club or honor society
that suits your interests and academic
field.
A great place to start, is getting involved
with the Student Support Services Club
(SSSC). The SSSC provides students
with the opportunity to take part in
community service, educational
workshops and social activities, while
networking with other FIU peers. The
SSSC currently has several executive
positions open for the 2015-2016
academic year. If you are interested in
being a part of the SSSC e-board,
please stop by the SSS office to
complete an application. Joining an
executive board provides invaluable
experience, and is a great highlight to
add to your resume!
Many changes are forthcoming,
including our scheduled workshops and
events. Our SSS tutors are creating
many new workshops to look forward to,
covering academic, social and personal
topics. The SSS staff are striving to host
events that are of interest to you, and a
big part of ensuring that is done is by
getting your feedback! Please send any
workshop suggestions to [email protected] ,
and the SSS staff will make sure to
consider adding them to the upcoming
workshops.
Wishing you all of the best,
Valerie Regis

The Conference is designed to bring representatives from various government entities together to discuss aspects of government employment. We regularly have reps from the military, FBI, CIA, State Department, and many other branches of the federal government, present and eager to discuss what kind of jobs they offer, and how best to apply for them.
After the panel discussions on government employment, we hold a resource fair — a kind of Career Fair strictly for government employment. Other features of the Federal Government Statewide Conference include breakout sessions on varying topics led by distinguished speakers. The event is free to FIU students and government agencies.

“SSSP has been a huge part of my success as an undergraduate student at FIU. For any newcomers accepted into the program with any doubt, fear not. Dr. Cruz and Mrs. Chacon are always there to assist in any way they can --- from talking about academics to just listening about your day, they truly strive for their students' success. It may seem like a lot of "extra" work, however rest assured that everything Dr. Cruz assigns holds a purpose. You will never regret joining SSSP. Good luck to everyone and future graduates! “ ~ Unishka Kaimrajh, Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences
Omara Vichot Bachelor of Science in
Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering
"My four years at FIU were an emotional roller coaster. My most fond memories would be coming to this university with no friends in June, 2010, and leaving this university with multiple life long friends. I encourage students to join a club on campus, that where your life long friends will be. Through your 4 years at FIU take time to enjoy the moment! Go to a football game, join a club, if your at BBC take a moment and fully observe the beauty that this campus has to offer throughout the day and night. Trust me, I've been at FIU since 2010, and there has been some major face lift for Biscayne Bay, but its nature aspect has remained the same."

My time as an undergrad was an adventure from the start. I would highly recommend students to keep an open mind about their ca-reer paths, as they might discover a different passion along the way, and to use all the resources available. Thanks to all the sup-port and resources from SSSP, Honors College, McNair Fellow-ship, and mentors, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my bache-lors in marine biology and I will be pursuing my Ph.D. in biology at FIU this fall.
~ Valeria Paz, Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology
“My time at FIU has taught me that believing in oneself is the most important aspect of succeeding. Excellence is not something that is pre-destined or only available to certain people. Excellence is fostered through our actions and decisions. Believing that you can be great student, or that you can become a doctor, teacher or lawyer is essential. The path through college is rocky and steep. It is paved with pitfalls and slippery slopes, but everyone is capable or climbing to the summit and reaching their dreams. Look forward to your goals, look past your insecurities and doubts, look over those who don’t believe in you and success is only a step away.”
~ Jessica Pintado, Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences & Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies
“The one piece of advice I have for students is to get involved. Join a club, an organization, attend workshops (ahem...SSS!), conferences, go on an aB trip, study abroad. Do it all! You make your own college experience enlightening and exhilarating.”
~ Stacy Pamphile, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
