He understood the need to pro- tect our environment so our chil- dren and their children can live happily in it. Cabramatta High School has tried its best to carry on this message. The school’s environmental club has been ensuring all classroom lights are off when not in use, sci- ence students have been planting trees and the school is recycling paper and cardboard regularly. However, the school wants to do more and earlier this month a group of students attended the 2010 International Year of Biod- iversity event in Sydney. Event organisers selected Cabra- matta High School and 20 other schools from NSW to help raise awareness of the loss of natural resources and the effect on people. The event offered education, activities and presentations in a fun and interactive way. “I never realised how much my actions and recreational activities can affect the environment,’’ year 8 student Shayla Dang said. ‘‘This event has really made me feel guilty. I will try my best to become more environmentally friendly.” Event organiser Christine Wood- land thanked students who atten- ded for their commitment and hard work. ‘‘You have helped us in pro- moting awareness of the effects of human activities on the environ- ment,’’ she said. Cabramatta High School students will bring the information back to school to share with their peers and will continue to come up with ways to make the school more environ- mentally friendly. Bright lights beckon Breanna By Eric Chen, year 9 Bossley Park High BOSSLEY Park High School student Breanna Dunn is a big name of the future and a star in waiting. The year 10 student was recently selected to attend singing and dancing workshops in the United States. Auditions were held by Glee Austra- lia at the Australian Institute of Perform- ing Arts, North Sydney. The audition panel was impressed with Breanna’s voice and she was offered the chance to attend a singing and song- writing workshop in Los Angeles. Breanna will write and sing her own songs during the three-week workshop and will perform at Disneyland and on Hollywood Boule- vard. But don’t think this opportunity is just down to luck, with Breanna practicing her music seven days a week. Country music is her forte and her inspirations are Kerry Underwood and John Mayer. Breanna hopes she will get noticed dur- ing her stint in LA and dreams of a profes- sional singing and songwriting career. ‘‘I feel lucky to have been chosen to be a part of an amazing experience and this is the next step towards a professional car- eer,’’ Breanna said. Charles Sturt University communications student Cindy Tran visited her former school, Cabramatta High, to give an inspirational talk to ambitious students consid- ering a career in journalism. ‘‘Journalism has always been something I wanted to do and the teachers here at Cabramatta High School have encouraged me to pursue it,’’ Miss Tran said. ‘‘Now I am where I wanted to be and I would like to offer the same support to these students.’’ Year 8 student Sheila Lam said she never thought someone from Cabramatta could be in the spot- light. ‘‘Seeing Cindy in person and talking to her about her achieve- ments has given me the motivation to chase my own dreams,’’ Sheila said. Year 11 student Phu Thap is determined to become a journalist and would like to work for Vogue magazine. ‘‘Cindy has given me the courage to publish my articles on BlogSpot for people to read and comment.’’ Phu said. ‘‘She has taught me to take criti- cism from others as positive feedback and to use it to my advantage.’’ Cabramatta High School students will follow Miss Tran’s blog at ‘‘Football Pixie’’ BlogSpot.
