    DrawingThe goal for this class is to create lines withcharacter, and ultimately making an imagewith style. Landscape, architecture, still lifeor human figure will be the subject matterexplored. Abstract images will also be included as options of inspiration. Twoapproaches for mastering pen&ink drawing will be explored. We will begin withpencil and trace them with pen/ink.     Monitors set up, observe and breakdown the classroom. There are noinstructions. You provide your ownnon-noxious materials. Oil paintersmust use non-toxic materialsto respect the model and other

    participants.

    Achieving effective color and light doesnt have to be difficult. Oil/acrylic/watercolor painters, all levels welcome. We will begin withthe basics and discuss materials and equipment that make paintingeasier and fun. Each class will feature still life setup to work

    from. Techniques covered will be using light and shade to createconvincing volume, how transparency creates depth, and using graysto make visual space in the still life. Should that color be warm orcold? Thick or thin? Mixed with white or pure? Come prepared topaint on the first class. Critique last class. Odorless thinner onlyplease.     In this class you will learn to create humangures and/or still life objects by mixingdifferent mediums together. Students willbe encouraged to explore various exciting

    images; photos, newspaper cuts, stencil and/or transferred images. We will dive in to usinga variety of mediums, grounds, techniquesand styles; acrylic, watercolor, pastel, tile,mirror, wood or just drawing tools. Theseitems will be combined to create an originalpiece of artwork. Some experience in paintingis helpful, but beginners are welcome.

    Volunteers assist as monitors to set-up the chemistry, observe and break down the Darkroom. Ourfacilities are available to the community for black and white film developing and printing no largerthan 11 x 14. Prior to registration, and lab use, new participants must have a brief over the phoneor e-mail interview with the photo coordinator. At the time of your initial arrival, the monitor will give

    you an orientation that will include Studio Ones safety procedures and participant protocol. Bringyour own photo paper and film. No production or commercial work is allowed. Lab time ispurchased in 20-hour blocks of time. Patrons use time within 6 months. $90 for 20 hours forOakland residents.

Learnvarious techniques in the photo printingprocess: dodging and burning; masking,darkroom chemistry, toning, using correctprinting filters, lens & filter choices andselecting the correct photo paper for yourprint. In this classstudents will become proficient in camera settings, developing film, composition,printing silver gelatin images. This class is for all levels of photographers.     Metal Jewelry DesignThis class emphasizes building basic/intermediate knowledge of jewelry design and construction.Beginning students will design their own jewelry and construct their design pieces using thefundamental techniques of soldering, sawing, filing, finishing, and basic bezel setting. Lectures,demonstrations, and handouts will provide the basis of any technique needed. Intermediate students

    will progress through more advanced techniques (forging, cold connections, etching, etc). Jewelry willbe made from metal sheet and wire. Brass, copper, and tools are provided. New students need toattend the first class for a safety discussion and a materials list.

    Sculpture Cartoneria

    The ability to create sculptures from paper is known as cartoneria (cardboard sculpture). Cartoneriais a popular art form from Mexico that combines a mixture of indigenous knowledge with Spaniard arttechniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexicos legends. In this course, we will create fantasticmythological creatures from paper. We will incorporate diverse elements from creatures such asdemons, angels and/or dragons to create new and unique forms.

    This class is Inspired by the centuries old tradition of Oaxaca animal carvings. You willlearn use hand woodcarving tools such as chisels and knives to create fantastic animals, towonderful, intricate and expressive by nature. This class is for the enthusiastic beginner orthe seasoned experienced woodcarver. We will cover the history and cultural background ofOaxaca wood carvings, alebrijes and other Mexican traditional arts. We will cover safetyrules in the wood shop, how to read the wood, basic shapes in sculpture, sealing of the artpiece, decorating and nishing, from the mere conception of the idea to the exhibition of theartwork.
