COURSE CONTENT

Year MBBS
UHS Syllabus Topic:
• Common problems of children in Pakistan and statistics of Pakistani children.
• Clinical methods in pediatrics.
• Nutrition (breast feeding, infant feeding, weaning) and nutritional disorders:(PEM, rickets, vitamin A deficiency, iodine deficiency, iron deficiency).
• Growth and development.
• Common pediatric infections: measles, tetanus, polio, diphtheria, whooping cough, aids.
• Malaria, enteric fever, tuberculosis, chicken pox, common skin infections.
• Expanded program of immunization (EPI). Newer vaccines.
• Diarrheal diseases.
• Acute respiratory infections (ARI).
• IMCI (integrated management of childhood illness).
• Neonatology: resuscitation of new born, care of normal new born, birth asphyxia, premature and low birth weight babies, neonatal jaundice, neonatal sepsis, neonatal fits,
respiratory distress of new born, common skin conditions of neonates; pyloric stenosis,
myelomeningocele, hydrocephalus, common congenital abnormalities and birth trauma.
• Neurology: meningitis, febrile, convulsions, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, mental handicap,
cerebral malaria, encephalitis.
• Cardiology: congenital heart diseases [VSD, PDA, TOF, ASD], rheumatic fever. Congestive cardiac failure, clinical assessment of a cyanotic neonate/infant.
• Hematology: anemias, thalassemia, leukemias, bleeding disorders.
• Nephrology: nephrotic syndrome, urinary tract infections, acute glomerulonephritis.
• Endocrinology: hypothyroidism, short stature, diabetes.
• Pulmonology: croup, asthma, tuberculosis, pneumonias, pleural effusions.
• Gastroenterology: abdominal pain, malabsorption, hepatitis, cirrhosis, acute liver failure. diarrhea [acute/chronic] dysentery, worm infestations, giardia, amoebiasis, rectal
polyp.

• Genetics: patterns of inheritance, Down’s syndrome
• Social pediatrics: right of child, child abuse, enuresis, encopresis, hyperactivity,
dyslexia, attention deficit disorder
• Miscellaneous: poisoning, prevention of home accidents, behavioral disorders.
• Pediatric surgery: hernia, intussusceptions, intestinal obstruction, talipes, congenital
dislocation of hip, vesico-ureteral reflux.
SKILLS:
1) Students will demonstrate his ability to obtain a relevant clinical history from a
parent or an older child.
2) Student will demonstrate his ability to perform adequate clinical examination of a
child of any age (including newborn).
3) Student will be able to interpret clinical and laboratory data to arrive at a
diagnosis.
4) Student will be able to advise appropriate nutritional measures for healthy and sick
children (Breast feeding, avoidance of bottle, proper weaning)
5) Student will be able to counsel the parents on health promotive and disease
preventive strategies for the child e.g. immunization procedures; hand washing)
6) Student will be able to recognize and manage common health problems of
children.
7) Student will recognize the danger signs of disease in children and be able to
appropriately refer children with severe disease to appropriate
specialists/hospitals.
8) Student will demonstrate his ability to perform essential clinical procedures
relevant to children e.g.
Resuscitation of newborn
Basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
Anthropometric measurements
Measuring blood pressure
Starting intravenous lines/ draw blood sample
Administration of oxygen therapy
Giving nebulizer therapy [bronchodilator]
Use of growth chart

Immunization: EPI schedule, vaccine administration
Nutrition: protein energy malnutrition, rickets, basis of paediatric nutrition
Development: development milestones, anthropometry
Respiratory diseases: stridor, diphtheria, pertussis, ARI, IMNCI guidelines,
asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis
Infections: measles, mumps, chicken pox, rheumatic fever, infective
endocarditis, malaria, enteric fever, meningitis, encephalitis, poliomyelitis,
croup, tetanus, AGE, ear infections
Gastroenterology: AGE, recurrent abdominal pain, chronic liver disease,
chronic diarrhea, celiac disease, malabsorption
Neonatology: normal newborn, breast feeding, neonatal jaundice, neonatal
sepsis, LBW/prematurity, neonatal convulsions, vomiting in newborn, birth
asphyxia, resuscitation, vitamin K deficiency, RDS, NEC, HIE
Cardiology: Acynotic heart diseases, Tetralogy of Fallot, CCF in children,
Rheumatic heart disease
Neurology: febrile seizures, epilepsy, meningitis, cerebral palsy, acute
flaccid paralysis, ataxia and movement disorder, neurodegenerative
disorders.
Endocrinology: diabetes mellitus, DKA, hypothyroidism, short stature,
disorders of puberty
Hematology: IDA, Thalassemia, hemolytic anemia, G6PD, hereditary
spherocytosis, bleeding disorders, aplastic anemia
Malignancies: ALL, AML, CML, CLL
Nephrology: UTI, nephrotic syndrome, AKI, CKD, APSGN, neuroblastoma,
Wilms tumor
Childhood poisoning

Year MBBS:
Clinical teaching is done in form of clinical bedside examinations and case
discussions.

Examination Schedule
1) Ward test is conducted for all clinical batches of 3rd
year and 4th
year in form of
bedside examinations followed by viva.
2) End of ward rotation evaluation is done for Final year in form of short cases, viva
and OSPE.
3) Class tests are taken starting from 4th
year MBBS (2 per session).
4) Class tests for Final year MBBS are arranged (3 per session).
5) Mid-term exam is taken for Final year MBBS.
6) Send up exam is held for Final year MBBS at end of academic session.

Time Table
Teaching Routine
i. There are three lectures per week of fourth and final year MBBS classes. These
lectures are interactive and focused on scenario-based learning.
ii. Weekly Problem based learning (PBL) is conducted for final year students.
iii. Clinicopathological conferences are held on regular basis where students prepare
CPC under the supervision of faculty members. All presentations are made by
students.
iv. Workshops are held for Final year MBBS for each clinical batch on Fluid and
Electrolytes, Neonatal resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy.
v. Clinical teaching is carried out in wards daily (morning & evening classes) in form
of history taking, bedside examinations & case presentations.
vi. Final year students are divided into three groups weekly. 1st group is assigned to
learn basic ward procedures including cannulation and NG insertion. 2nd
group is
involved in vaccination administration and 3rd
group observes Neonatal ICU
procedures.
vii. Class tests & mid-term exams are held to evaluate undergraduate students.
viii. Clinical assessment of undergraduate students is done in form of Ward test
including TOACs & short cases.
