Ascending the Heights
Remembering Our Mortality
Step 6
1. Remembrance of Death
i. Just as bread is the most necessary of all foods, so the thought of death is the most
essential of all works.
2. My death may come at any time
3. Does God know or care about our status in this life?
4. We often live as if we will never die
5. Every word is preceded by thought
Being Realistic About Life
Step 7
1. To mourn is to embrace a sober view of life
2. To mourn is to abandon a pleasure-oriented way of life. Should I stop living for fun?
3. Will we be questioned about the things we do in life?
4. When we die, we will not be criticized for having failed to work miracles. We will certainly be
criticized for not having mourned unceasingly. We are called to a higher level of existence
5. Do not cease to picture the days in front of you
6. Let your reclining in bed be for you an image of your declining into your grave
7. Just as fire is destruction of straw, so are pure tears destruction of all material and spiritual impurity
Steps for you
1. Take an inventory of your priorities
write down your positive and negative traits- work on them one at a time
2. Have you paid attention to your eternal soul today, this week, this month, this year, this decade?
3. Take care of yourself, eat right, set new priorities
Someone has said that you cannot pass a day devoutly unless you think of it as your last. This, then, is the
next step. He who has climbed it will never sin…
Accomplish these two and you will have ascended the seventh rung of the ladder!!
