The i-factor and the y-chromosome

• Background– Why so few women in Informatics ?

– What can and should be done ?

– Isn't that sexist ?

• Specifics– Tasks and activities of gender equality officers

– How you can become imvolved

Vorstellung Frauenbeauftragte SET (8. Oktober 2015)

Gender Equality / Diversity Officers IN.TUMProf. Dr. Anne Brüggemann-Klein,

Dr. Stefanie Demirci,

Nina Hubig, Dora Dzvonyar

Low numbers of women in CS not "natural"

• First programmer: Ada Lovelace

• Female programmers of first computers

"Eniac girls"

• Grace Hopper– Business applications

– First high-level programming language

(Cobol)

• Adele Goldberg– Smalltalk (OO)

– GUIs

– Vorläufer von Apple

Macintosh bei Xerox Parc

What happened in the eighties ?

When women stopped coding,

NPR 576, 2014 October 17http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2014/10/17/356944145/

episode-576-when-women-stopped-coding link

Vorstellung Frauenbeauftragte SET (8. Oktober 2015)

Some factors

• Personal Computer,

advertised as toys for boys

• CS teaching relies

increasingly on prior

programming knowledge

(which boys have more

than girls)

Chilly climate for women

Consequence / our approach • Don't fix the women

• Fix the circumstances that

might just as well hold back

some men

Should we be concerned ?

• Gender equality guaranteed by constitution (Art 3)– Isn't that the end of the story ?

• Caution !– Well-documented social mechanisms wrt minorities demand action

• What are these (gender-independent!!) mechanisms?– token syndrom

– stereotype threat

– imposter syndrom

• General consequences,

when activating stereotypes for minorities Feeling of not belonging

Feeling of not being good enough

Chilly climate

Vorstellung Frauenbeauftragte SET (8. Oktober 2015)

Ways to promote inclusive climate

Awareness is key (small incidences add up)

• Assume that there is no "geek" gene

• Don't tell anybody what they should/can't do,

based on stereotypes

• Know that desire to learn, application and good work

beats in-born talent (growth mindset)

• Don't ask members of minority groups

to speak for their group

• Abstain from derogatory remarks based on stereotypes

• Have the courage to intervene if you observe derogatory

remarks based on stereotypes or any kind of harrassment

Vorstellung Frauenbeauftragte SET (8. Oktober 2015)

‼ Inclusion benefits all ‼

Vorstellung Frauenbeauftragte SET (8. Oktober 2015)
