o SBI had increased its benchmark lending
rates by 50 basis points to 11.5 percent;
this lending rate increase is due to the
rising cost of funds for banks, which arepaying more for
deposits as a way of
encouraging investors to save.
o The new bill proposes to amend the SBI Act
to allow the minimum central bank holdingin the bank to be
lowered to 51 percent
from 55 percent. The bill seeks to allow SBI
to raise funds through preference shares
or private placements.
