SACKED minister Stuart Robert’ssecret stake in a company linked tohis controversial China-deal trip costhis job.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbulldumped the Human Services Minis-ter yesterday after revelations of MrRobert’s hidden shareholdings.
An inquiry by top public servantMartin Parkinson concluded MrRobert had acted “inconsistently
with the Statement of MinisterialStandards” when he flew to Beijing inAugust 2014. There he saw closefriend Paul Marks ink a deal betweenhis company Nimrod Resources anda Chinese government-owned miner,Minmetals.
Mr Robert admitted to Dr Parkin-
son’s inquiry that his trustee hadbeen “allocated’’ shares in a companycalled Metallum Holdings, whichhad an interest in Nimrod Resources.
The MP said he did not know thiswhen he flew to Beijing.
Mr Turnbull said in a statementyesterday: “Mr Robert recognisedthat this connection would create theimpression that at the time he wentto Beijing he had something person-
ally to gain from the Nimrod Resour-ces project. As a result, Mr Robert hasasked me not to consider him in thepending reshuffle of the ministry.’’
Dr Parkinson’s investigationconcluded that Mr Robert had actedinconsistently with the ministerialstandards, although he accepted thatMr Robert “may not have intendedto do so”.CONTINUED PAGE 8

FEDERAL Minister Stuart Robert, under fire for a secret visit to China, failed to publicly defend himself yes-terday — and in a letter to the PMcould only say he was “confident” hehadn’t breached integrity rules.
Malcolm Turnbull has ordered histop bureaucrat to begin a “thorough’’investigation of Mr Robert’s secretdash to Beijing to join millionairePaul Marks, a Liberal donor, whowas securing a business deal.
Mr Turnbull told Parliament: “Ican confirm I have asked the sec-retary of my department for advice inrelation to … ministerial standards.
“I deal with these matters verythoroughly and very seriously, and in
accordance with the code,’’ the PrimeMinister said.
The secretary of the Departmentof Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mar-tin Parkinson, will examine paper-work, including Mr Robert’s leaveauthorisation and visa applicationform for his China trip.
Mr Robert, who has owned sharesin two of Mr Marks’s firms, saw adeal signed between the millionaire’sNimrod Resources and the ChineseGovernment-owned Minmetals.
The inquiry is also likely to look atwhether he used his official govern-
ment passport to enter China, andwhat involvement, if any, Australia’sembassy in Beijing had with his visit.
The Human Services Ministermade no statement in his own de-fence yesterday, but instead sent aletter to the PM asking him to referthe trip for investigation.
“I am confident that I have notacted inappropriately,’’ he wrote.
“But I am cognisant of the highstandards expected of all Ministersand I … ask you to seek advice fromthe Secretary of the Department ofPrime Minister and Cabinet on thesematters. I will, of course, fully assistthe Secretary.’’CONTINUED PAGE 6

The alleged killers are pro-tected by the legal system andcannot be identified. But theHerald Sun can reveal one ofthe men breached parole twicein matters that should haveseen him behind bars.
The convicted criminal, who was on parole after havinghis original sentence for a seri-ous offence reduced at appeal, allegedly returned a positivedrug test when reporting toCorrections Victoria, and onfurther investigation, policeclaim they found child porn onhis mobile phone.

TRUE COURAGETEEN VOWS TO KEEP FIGHTING P6-7
EXCLUSIVE PICTURE Then shadow resources minister Ian Macfarlane, Chinese mogul Li Ruipeng, then Opposition
leader Tony Abbott, Liberal donor Paul Marks and then shadow minister Stuart Robert say cheers in June 2013

EMBATTLED Liberal minister Stu-art Robert organised a dinner in hisParliament House office with TonyAbbott and a Chinese businessmogul at the request of his donormate, Paul Marks.
Mr Robert hosted the dinner —three months out from the federalelection in 2013 — so businessmanLi Ruipeng could meet senior Liber-als including shadow resources min-ister Ian Macfarlane.
The Herald Sun has obtained aphotograph of the dinner, whichshows Mr Marks, Mr Abbott and MrLi among guests at the dinner in MrRobert’s office.
Today’s revelations will heap fur-ther pressure on Prime MinisterMalcolm Turnbull to act against theHuman Services Minister, already
under investigation over a potentialbreach of ministerial standards.
Mr Robert is being investigatedafter the Herald Sun revealed he se-cretly joined donor mate Mr Marksin Beijing to attend a signing cer-emony between Mr Marks’s firm,Nimrod Resources, and Chinesegovernment-owned Minmetals.
The Herald Sun then revealed MrRobert also led a delegation, that in-cluded Nimrod representatives, to
meet a Chinese government minis-ter while he was claiming to be onholiday; and that Mr Li gave MPswho were at the 2013 dinner de-signer watches worth $250,000.
It has now emerged those MPsreturned the watches to Mr Marks, not to Mr Li, because by the timethey realised that the watches werenot fake, Mr Li had disappeared.
Mr Macfarlane, who went on tobecome science and industry minis-
ter, yesterday told the Herald Sun: “Ihave a receipt showing I handed thewatch back to Paul Marks.”
Also present at the gathering wasthe then president of the Liberal Na-tional Party, Bruce McIver, a partypowerbroker recently appointed asa director of Australia Post.
A spokesman for Mr Abbott saidlast night Treasurer Scott Morrisonalso attended the dinner briefly.CONTINUED PAGE 4
