Five tiny things to do today1. Make a mini book using the theme “at the shop” 2. Draw a pile of rubbish 3. Close your eyes. Have a friend hold different foods or spices under your nose. Guess what they are 4. Make a fancy dress outfit from a tea towel and toilet role 5. Write a story about the travels of your little finger.
A riddle … Q: Poke your fingers in my eyes and I will open my jaws wide. Paper, card or material — I am greedy and devour them all. Who am I?

Fold the bottom edge of the paper upwards and tuck it in to the thin layers.

You could leave the hat as it is now and not do anymore folds. You could paint it green and make it a soldiers hat, or even add a feather and pretend to be Robin Hood! If you want to make the hat flat, like the illustration at the bottom of this column, you need to hold both edges of the hat, in the middle, and pull in opposite directions. The top of the hat will flatten and turn into a diamond shape.
7
Tuck the top and the bot-tom of the diamond into the rim of the hat and, if you need to, secure with a little bit of sticky tape. Your hat is done and you’re ready to decorate it – why not add paint, glitter, pieces of material or anything else you can find around the house!

THE EFFECT Using a bit of maths you will be able to guess what two numbers someone has just rolled, even though you weren’t in the room when they rolled it!
1 Explain to your audience what you are going to do. Tell them that, once
you have left the room, they must roll a die, remember the number, roll the die again and remember the second number.
2 When you come back in the room, ask them to do the following and, if neces-
sary, give them a pen and paper to help them:
•Double the first number that was rolled
•Add five to this number
•Times this number by five
•Add the second number that was rolled
3 Have them tell you the answer to this. Now take 25 away from this number
and you will be left with a two-digit number. The first digit will be the first number they rolled, and the second will be the second number they rolled!

Each year of Chinese New Year is con-nected with an animal and people born in the year of that animal are said to share personality traits with their animal. You can work out your animal using the chart below!
The animals are in this order because the Emperor of China decided that he would include them in his new calendar based on who was the first to swim across the river. While the ox was the best swimmer, the rat was very smart and sat on the ox’s back to get across, then jumped off onto land before the ox. That’s why it comes first !

IT’S A FACT!
A 75-year-old
person will have
slept about 23
years!
The Chinese have a different date for the new year because they follow a different calendar, based on the movements of the moon and sun. Chinese New Year falls on a different day every year but it usually occurs sometime in January or February. This year new year is February 7.
YOU WILL NEED
• 2 sheets of red card
• 2 sheets of yellow card
• 1 sheet of purple card
• Small piece of white paper
• Small piece of black paper
• Scissors
• Glue• Sticky tape
• 2 pencils/chopsticks
Make a Chinese dragon puppet
From your card and paper, cut the following shapes:1 red face, 2 white eyes, 2 black circles, 2 yellow eyebrows, 1 purple nose, 1 set of teeth, 6 large purple triangles, 6 small purple triangles, 4 large yellow teardrop shapes, 5 small yellow teardrop shapes, 1 red tail
THE FACE Glue the six large purple
triangles behind the face, then add
the four large yellow teardrop shapes.
Attach the eyes, teeth and nose, and,
lastly, the eyebrows.
THE BODY Cut three strips 4cm wide and 29cm long (or the longest length of an A4 page) from the red card. Stick each piece together with sticky tape to make a really, really long strip. Repeat for the yellow card. Glue the two strips together, as shown to the right. Fold the yellow strip over the red strip, then the red over the yellow, and continue this until you get to the end of the strips. Secure the ends together with sticky tape or glue.
THE TAIL Secure the six small purple triangles behind the tail with glue and then add the five small yellow teardrops.
YOU WILL NEED
• A sheet of coloured
card or paper
•Scissors
• Glue• Two paper clips
• Glitter, paint, pens
(optional)
Make a Chinese lanternCut a 2cm wide strip from the shortest end of the card and put it to the side: you will need this later.
Fold the rest of the card in half and make a strong crease.
Cut into the folded edge of the card and stop about 2cm away from the edge. Do this about 12 times until you have a piece of card that looks something like the orange piece of card to the right.
Unfold the card and attach the short ends together with glue. A handy tip is to keep the paper in place with two paper clips until the glue is dry.
Glue the thin strip of card to the top of the lantern, as a handle, and decorate with glitter, paint or ribbons. Why not make lots of lanterns, thread them onto a piece of string and hang them up in your room?

Start with a double sheet of newspaper. Fold it in half in the usual way and crease it down the middle. Fold each half of the lower (folded) edge to the centre crease.
1
Rotate the paper so the triangle points upwards and fold the upper layer of paper in half.
2
Fold the triangle downwards and tuck it in behind the thin layers.
5
Turn the paper over and fold both sides in to the centre. If you have a bigger head, or are making it for an adult, don’t fold the edges all the way to the middle – leave about 3cm from the centre.
