You could paint it green and make it a soldiers hat, or even add a feather and pretend to be Robin Hood! If you want to make the hat flat, like the illustration at the bottom of this column, you need to hold both edges of the hat, in the middle, and pull in opposite directions. The top of the hat will flatten and turn into a diamond shape. 7 Tuck the top and the bot- tom of the diamond into the rim of the hat and, if you need to, secure with a little bit of sticky tape. Your hat is done and you’re ready to decorate it – why not add paint, glitter, pieces of material or anything else you can find around the house! 8 THE EFFECT Using a bit of maths you will be able to guess what two numbers someone has just rolled, even though you weren’t in the room when they rolled it! 1 Explain to your audience what you are going to do. Tell them that, once you have left the room, they must roll a die, remember the number, roll the die again and remember the second number. 2 When you come back in the room, ask them to do the following and, if neces- sary, give them a pen and paper to help them: Double the first number that was rolled Add five to this number Times this number by five Add the second number that was rolled 3 Have them tell you the answer to this. Chinese New Year falls on a different day every year but it usually occurs sometime in January or February. This year new year is February 7. YOU WILL NEED 2 sheets of red card 2 sheets of yellow card 1 sheet of purple card Small piece of white paper Small piece of black paper Scissors Glue Sticky tape 2 pencils/chopsticks Make a Chinese dragon puppet From your card and paper, cut the following shapes: 1 red face, 2 white eyes, 2 black circles, 2 yellow eyebrows, 1 purple nose, 1 set of teeth, 6 large purple triangles, 6 small purple triangles, 4 large yellow teardrop shapes, 5 small yellow teardrop shapes, 1 red tail THE FACE Glue the six large purple triangles behind the face, then add the four large yellow teardrop shapes. Attach the eyes, teeth and nose, and, lastly, the eyebrows. THE BODY Cut three strips 4cm wide and 29cm long (or the longest length of an A4 page) from the red card. Stick each piece together with sticky tape to make a really, really long strip. Repeat for the yellow card. Glue the two strips together, as shown to the right. Fold the yellow strip over the red strip, then the red over the yellow, and continue this until you get to the end of the strips. Secure the ends together with sticky tape or glue. THE TAIL Secure the six small purple triangles behind the tail with glue and then add the five small yellow teardrops. YOU WILL NEED A sheet of coloured card or paper Scissors Glue Two paper clips Glitter, paint, pens (optional) Make a Chinese lantern Cut a 2cm wide strip from the shortest end of the card and put it to the side: you will need this later. Fold the rest of the card in half and make a strong crease. Cut into the folded edge of the card and stop about 2cm away from the edge. Do this about 12 times until you have a piece of card that looks something like the orange piece of card to the right. Unfold the card and attach the short ends together with glue. A handy tip is to keep the paper in place with two paper clips until the glue is dry. Glue the thin strip of card to the top of the lantern, as a handle, and decorate with glitter, paint or ribbons. Why not make lots of lanterns, thread them onto a piece of string and hang them up in your room? 1 2 3 4 5 Magic Dice TO ASSEMBLE Glue the head to one end of the body, and the tail to the other. Make a Chinese dragon puppet

From your card and paper, cut the following shapes:1 red face, 2 white eyes, 2 black circles, 2 yellow eyebrows, 1 purple nose, 1 set of teeth, 6 large purple triangles, 6 small purple triangles, 4 large yellow teardrop shapes, 5 small yellow teardrop shapes, 1 red tail

THE FACE Glue the six large purple

triangles behind the face, then add

the four large yellow teardrop shapes.

Attach the eyes, teeth and nose, and,

lastly, the eyebrows.
