    2.1. Preliminary comments

The basic safety instructions below apply to the STULZ UltraWater. Pay attention to the additional warning notes in the individual sections of this technical document.

    2.2. Proper use

STULZ reverse osmosis systems are approved solely for the preparation of particle-free water. Depending on the type of system, the untreated water may have a low salt content (tap water and surface water has up to approx. 1000 mg/l). If STULZ systems are used for water of a different quality, it is essential that you first contact STULZ. Generally, drinking water that conforms to the German Drinking Water Regulations is suitable for use in reverse osmosis systems. In some cases (e.g. if the Silt Density Index is higher than 3), suitable pretreatment (softening, hardness stabilization) must be performed beforehand.

The STULZ UltraWater is intended solely for indoor use, and may only be used with compatible products. Any other use besides or beyond this shall be regarded as improper use. STULZ cannot be held liable for damages resulting from the above. The plant operator is the sole bearer of the risk.

The STULZ UltraWater may only be used in accordance with the instructions in the technical documentation from STULZ.

    2.3. Unauthorized operating practices

Safe operation of the supplied system is only ensured if it is used correctly in accordance with the “Proper use” section of the Technical Manual. The limit values set out in the technical data and test record must never be exceeded under any circumstances.

The STULZ UltraWater is designed for technical use, not for the treatment of drinking water!

    3. TRANSPORT / STORAGE- Before transport, fully drain the system and seal with plugs to prevent water from escaping.

    - Pack the system in a sufficiently large and cushioned cardboard box (preferably the original box) for transport, to prevent damage.

    - It is essential to avoid the formation of ice inside the system.

    - The system may only be stored in a temperature range of +4...+45°C.

    - Membranes must be packed in a watertight bag.

    4. MECHANICAL REQUIREMENTSSecure both the system installation board and the pressure tank so they cannot fall over. The installation board can be fastened to sturdy walls (concrete, masonry, wood) using the supplied screws and dowels. For other materials, use suitable fastening equipment. The pressure tank can be positioned upright. Pre-vent hoses from falling or being caught by choosing suitable fastening equipment.

    5. APPLICATION LIMITSReverse osmosis membranes are sensitive to frost. Therefore, never allow the temperature to drop below freezing. The system, filled pressure tank and spare membranes may only be stored in a temperature range of +4...+45°C.

    6. ABOUT THIS DEVICEThe STULZ UltraWater is intended for the treatment of drinking water for use in ultrasonic humidifiers. Adiabatic humidifying systems produce cold mist and must be supplied with demineralized drinking water, in order to ensure that the vibrating elements continue to function throughout the life of the system, and to prevent any buildup of limescale in the system or in the humidified room. This can be achieved very simply in practice by positioning the STULZ UltraWater reverse osmosis system upstream. The heart of the STULZ UltraWater reverse osmosis system is a high-performance membrane, which removes chalk, sediment and other undesirable substances from drinking water. Special features of this system are an integrated pressure pump and two combination filter stages, which ensure low-cost operation and a long service life.

During the production of demineralized drinking water, the STULZ UltraWater reverse osmosis system removes

    ● 95% of all dissolved solids (minerals)

    ● 99% of all bacteria and viruses, and a high proportion of organic substances

    ● 99% of chloride

    from the water.

The STULZ UltraWater is designed to demineralize drinking water, not produce drinking water!

Depending on the untreated water, this water treatment system removes at least 95% of all salt and minerals from the water. If this system is used in applications with little or no outside air supply (e.g. equipment rooms) in combination with STULZ UltraSonic humidifying systems, it is essential to prevent salt/minerals from being brought into the room via the air humidifying system and depos-iting themselves on surfaces. For this purpose we urgently recommend the downstream use of a deionization system (e.g. STULZ ion exchanger SD2800 – K85802).

If two solutions with different ion concentrations – aqueous solutions with different salt content – are sepa-rated by a semi-permeable membrane, the solutions attempt to equalise the concentration. This attempt results in ions from the aqueous solution, with the higher concentration trying to “migrate” to the side of the semi-permeable membrane the lower concentration solution.

This concentration equalisation cannot occur in this way, as the membrane is impermeable for the ions. Thus, the water molecules, which can penetrate the membrane, flow from the side with the lower concen-trate to the side with the higher concentration to achieve the equalisation. This process continues until the concentration equalisation of the ions on both sides has been achieved or so-called osmotic pressure has become established on the high concentration side. This osmotic pressure is less than 2 bar in drink-ing water and increases as the different in concentration rises. This process is known as osmosis and, in nature, is responsible for regulating the water balance in cells.

The bursting of cherries is described below as a clear example of osmosis.

The starting point is a ripe cherry, whose skin is wet with water after a rain shower.

The rain water on the skin of the cherry represents a liquid with lower concentration of dissolved particles. The cherry juice inside the cherries represents a liquid with high concentration due to the dissolved sugar.

The cherry juice attempts to equalise the concentration with the rain water and wants to diffuse towards this water. However, this is prevented by the semi-permeable membrane, which retains the sugar mol-ecules because of their size.

This results in a process in which the water molecules flow from outside into the inside of the cherry and the pressure in the cherry increases until it can no longer expand and finally bursts.

As the name suggests, reverse osmosis is the converse of the osmosis process.

Tap water represents the side with high ion concentration and is forced towards the pure water with the low concentration by application of an external pressure.

This externally applied pressure must be higher than the osmotic pressure. This is the only way in which the water molecules can migrate against their natural osmotic direction into the area with lower concentra-tion and the substances dissolved in the tap water cannot pass through the semi-permeable membrane because of their size. Therefore, almost exclusively water molecules remain on the pure water side. The substances remaining on the membrane must be continuously discharged to prevent clogging of the mem-brane.

    Reverse osmosis technology

If two solutions with dierent ion concentrations – aqueous solutions with dierent salt content – are separate by a semi-permeable membrane, the solutions attempt to equalise the concentration. This attempt results in ions from the aqueous solution with the higher concentration trying to “migrate” to the side of the semi-perme -able membrane with the lower concentration solution. This concentration equalisation cannot occur in this way, as the membrane is impermeable for the ions. Thus, the water molecules, which can penetrate the membrane, flow from the side with the lower concentrate to the side with the higher concentration to achieve the equalisation. This process continues until the concentration equalisation of the ions on both sides has been achieved or so-called osmotic pressure has become estab -lished on the high concentration side. Removes gaseous substances, e.g. chlorine and particles > 5µm.

Stage 2 TFC membrane (thin film composite) 2 years 2 years

Removes hardness elements and other minerals, such as lead, copper, chromium, mercury, sodium, cadmium, fluoride, nitrites, nitrates, selenium and organic substances with a high and medium molecular weight, such as pesticide and drug residues.

Stage 3 Combination filter (asymmetrical composite material) 12 months 12 months

Removes gaseous substances, e.g. chlorine, particles and odors.

    1) At rates of up to 150 l/h. If the untreated water contains chlorine (concentration >0.1 mg/l), this reduces the filter service life by up to 50%! 2) The filter service life may be shorter or even longer in isolated cases, depending on the local conditions. Regular visual inspections must be performed.

    Note:

We recommend performing test measurements to determine conductivity over a longer period, so that the cycle times can be ascertained for your particular application. For this purpose, we recommend installing a measuring branch pipe in the device outlet.

  • STULZ UltraWater 3-stage reverse osmosis system SUW Installation

    © STULZ GmbH, Hamburg - 21 -

    7. INSTALLATION

    7.1. Assembly

Minimum space of 5 cm should be left on all sides of the installation board, to allow room for the connec-tions.

The spacing of the mounting holes is 550 mm horizontally and 380 mm vertically.

The pressure tank should be installed close to the system. The position of the tank (standing, lying) is un-important. The tank should not be placed more than 2 m higher or lower than the system.

To ensure safe operation of the system, the erection standards of DIN VDE 100 must be complied with.If the equipment is installed in an environment in which no leakage must occur, a water detector should be installed at a suitable location. This must then cut off the water supply pipe in the event of a fault. In addition, a col-lecting basin should be installed beneath the equipment.

    Note:

The ambient temperature should always lie between +5 and +35°C during operation. The stor-age temperature is 4 to 45°C.

Secure the tank so it cannot fall!

    Note:

Choose the fastening materials in accordance with the local conditions.

    Note:

Connection of the pressure tank is absolutely essential for reliable operation of ultrasonic humidifiers with the reverse osmosis system!

Install a pressure reducer upstream of the system, which restricts the intake pressure to max. 4 bar.

    Note:

    Note:

During installation, the reverse osmosis system must be separated from the drinking wa-ter mains by a backflow preventer.

In sensitive areas where leaks must be avoided at all costs, we recommend the use of a leakage warning system. This will cut off the water supply in the event of a leak.

Make sure that the incoming water pressure is within the system's permitted range. If the pressure is too high, suitable reduction measures (e.g. pressure reducers) must be installed upstream.

If softened water is used for the reverse osmosis system, regular inspections of the softening plant are essential! If the softening plant stops supplying softened water, switch off the reverse osmosis system immediately and check the softening plant.

If a hardness stabilization filter is used, check the filter filling regularly (e.g. every 6 months) and replace if necessary.

Proceed as follows to connect the STULZ UltraWater:

The waste water (= concentrate) is expelled from the system with little loss of pressure. Make sure that the concentrate pipe is NEVER sealed or restricted. If the concentrate pipe has to be very long (more than 5 meters), the diameter must also be enlarged accordingly.

The pure water from a reverse osmosis system is completely bacteriological-ly clean. However, in certain circumstances biofilms may form in the connect-ed pure water pipe. To annihilate these or inhibit their formation, a chemical such as chlorine dioxide can be added to the water. Please contact Technical Support. Only use genuine hoses, to ensure tightness.

If the permeate pipe has to be very long (more than 10 meters), the diameter must also be enlarged accordingly.

    7.3. Installing the membrane

If the membrane is not yet installed at the site of installation (membrane is delivered sealed in plastic film), it must be installed.

Use the supplied membrane and, if applicable, the housing key:

Proceed as follows to insert the membrane:

1Pull the module housing out of the retaining clips.

2Unscrew the cover of the module housing. If it is too securely fastened, use the supplied housing key (detach the hose first).

3It is important that you remove the plastic film from the membrane without damaging the latter.

4Apply a very light coating of silicone or neutral grease (Vaseline) to the two small seals and the large special seal.

    5Insert the membrane.

    Note:

    Note:

The membranes for the SUW 120 and SUW 400 are not interchangeable!

Push the membrane into the housing with the pure water manifold pipe first (two small seals). When you feel a definite resistance, the membrane must be pushed in another couple of millimeters.

    7.6. Wall-mounted installation

Proceed as follows to install the SUW 120 or SUW 400:

1Check the function and tightness of the STULZ UltraWater. For this, see the "Start-up" section. After a successful test, switch off the power sup-ply to the system.

2First screw the suspension bolts 2/3 into the wall, and loosely suspend the SUW from them.

3Position the SUW horizontally using a spirit level. Next, fully tighten the suspension bolts.

Avoid any squashing or kinking of cables and hoses!

    Note:

Select minimum distances from obstacles and minimum lengths of hoses and cables so as to ensure that hoses and cables cannot be kinked or squashed.

    8. START-UP

The drain water connection must be ensured.

Do not use mains water with a temperature above 45°C.

    Protect the system against frost.

If the system is disconnected from the mains water for more than 5 days, the system must be disconnected from the mains electricity and the water drained from the system.

Avoid water hammer! The pre-pressure may not exceed 10 bar in any time!

    Note:

If the SUW is operated without the housing, the warning sign „W08“ must be installed at a visible location!

If contamination of chalk must be avoided because of sensitive applications. Wait for the required conductance before filling the water tank.

    Tank

4When the pressure tank is completely full (pump stops), close the tank. Undo the connection between the SUW and the consumer.

5Drain the water, then open the pressure tank once more so that it can also be emptied.

    Note:

    Note:

If the system is equipped with a flow restrictor in the form of a ball valve, this must always be closed during operation (lever transverse to the direction of flow).

Completely drain the first fill of the pressure tank, to ensure that residues from membrane disinfectants are flushed out. Do not use the water from this first fill.

6Reconnect the SUW and the consumer. It is es-sential that the pressure tank remains open during this process.

    Note:

For sensitive applications in which the ingress of chalk must be avoided at all costs, only fill the tank when the desired con-ductivity has been reached. Check with a portable measuring instrument if necessary.

    Note:

For contact to a conductivity monitor (error message to the BMS or acoustic signal if conductivity is too high), we recommend the STULZ conductivity measuring kit.

    9. OPERATIONThe supplied water is conveyed through a prefilter and particles and chlorine are removed from it. The prefiltered water is pumped through a semipermeable membrane by the pressure pump, and divided into a pure water flow and a waste water flow. The volume of waste water is adjusted automatically by a flow restrictor.

If the intake pressure upstream of the device drops (e.g. because the drinking water supply has been cut off), the inlet valve of the device closes for safety reasons. The intake pressure is monitored by a sensor. If it falls below the minimum, the system automatically shuts down to protect the booster pump from running dry, and to prevent water from flowing back into the drinking water mains.

The pure water is stored in a pressure tank. When the tank is full, a tank pressure switch shuts down the system. External de
