Named a BBC New Generation Artist, the exciting young cellist Andrei Ioniţă takes on the formidable challenge of Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante, once considered unplayable. Two folky and fairytale-like pieces by Russian composer Liadov round out the program.

GERMAN ROMANTICSFRI NOV 29 @ 8 PM SAT NOV 30 @ 8 PMANDREI FEHER conductor BLAKE POULIOT violinSchumann Overture, Scherzo & FinaleBrahms Violin Concerto in D majorGernsheim Symphony No. 2 in E-flat majorFriedrich Gernsheim was hugely influenced and inspired by his contemporaries Schumann and Brahms, as evidenced by in his expressive Symphony No. 2, which tips its hat to Brahms’s First Symphony. Banned in Nazi Germany because of his Jewish identity, Gernsheim’s works remained largely undiscovered, halting his fame in later years. Blake Pouliot, the rising star Canadian violinist, joins the KWS for Brahms’s virtuosic and technically demanding Violin Concerto.

The overture from Idomeneo is full of high drama and expectation. The structurally complex and distinct-sounding Symphony No. 39 is fiery, grand and rich. In one of only two minor-key piano concertos that Mozart composed, Ukrainian pianist Serhiy Salov shows off his glittering technique.

Religious in subject matter, the music is decidedly operatic and unashamedly theatrical, indicative of the operas that made Rossini famous. Beethoven’s First Symphony is built on the achievements of his predecessors Haydn and Mozart, and is distinctly classical. Though at the time Beethoven and Rossini did not see eye-to-eye, they are now both considered classical greats.

Donations account for over one-third of our annual revenue every season, which impacts over 100,000 people through our various concert series, educational programs and outreach initiatives.

AS A DONOR, YOU MAKE A PROFOUND IMPACT. You bring calm to the stressed, hope to the devastated, and ideas to the uninspired. You help transcend barriers —economic, age, language—to create a sense of community among a hall full of strangers.

“I came home feeling different — joyful and less tired.” — Jody, audience member, The Great Human Odyssey, May 4, 2018For more information on how you can share the joys and benefits of music with those who need it the most, please visit kwsymphony.ca or call 519-745-4711 ext 275. Thank you!

GOVERNMENT & FOUNDATION SUPPORTERS

“One of Waterloo Region’s most important cultural institutions…. and evidence you don’t need to go to Toronto for a first-rate classical experience…. K-W Symphony contributes to the cultural life of this community, both in and outside the concert hall. The region would be a poorer place without it.” — Editorial in The Record, November 14, 2018
