SCOPE OF THIS REPORT

3

This report focuses on sub-watt thermal

energy harvesting: heat is converted

into electrical energy thanks to

thermoelectric generators delivering up to

500 mW to power low power devices.

It analyzes the offer on: sub-watt Thermo

Electric Generators (TEG) and storage

components industries with a deep

analysis of the technologies, the actors

and a TEG global market quantification.

It investigates the adoption of sub-watt

thermal energy harvesting in 5 main

segments and provides a qualification

and quantification of the 12 most

promising applications.

DEFINITIONS OF THERMO ELECTRIC GENERATOR (TEG)

TECHNOLOGIES

4

3G -TEG Source : Evident

Infinergia has divided thermoelectric technologies into three categories:

2. Thin-Film TEG or “TF-TEG” technology (a.k.a. 2nd generation)

TF-TEG are much smaller and feature orders of magnitude higher thermocoupledensity thanks to thermocouple sizes down to a few tens of micrometers.

Output voltage can be a factor of 10 higher per TEG from 1% of TEG volume.

Commercial TF-TEGs also use Bi2Te3 materials which undergo someelectrochemical or semiconductor processes.

1. Bulk TEG technology (a.k.a. 1st generation)

Individually mounted thermoelectric legs, typically ~1 millimeter in size and

Made of Bi2Te3 (Bismuth Telluride) semiconductor materials.

zT is around 0,9 (approximately 8% of thermoelectric efficiency) and generate up to10s of watts at maximum hot side temperatures around 250°C.

3. Emerging thermal energy harvesting technologies (a.k.a. 3rd generation)

3G-TEG technologies are still in development but offer promising levels ofperformance (zT of 3 for instance), use of common, abundant materials, or hightemperature operation enabled by new material properties and assemblytechnologies.

3G-TEGs leverage both new materials (e.g. SiGe, SiMg) and nanostructures(nanodots, nanowires or super lattices).

Interesting for high source temperature applications, but yet commercially unproven, isthe Micron-gap Thermo-Photo-Voltaic (MTPV) technology

Thin FilmTEGSource : Micropelt

Bulk TEGSource : Kryotherm

KEY LEARNINGS OF THIS REPORT:

5

Historically based on bulk technology, the Thermo Electric Generator (TEG) industry is moving

towards the 2nd and 3rd technologies which open new application opportunities.1

The TEG component market should grow from 24 M$ in 2014 to 77M$ by 2020, with a

compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%.2

Products using Sub-Watt Thermal Energy Harvesting are today commercialized in several

applications over 2 segments: “Infrastructure and Building” and “Industrial & Professional”.3

Applications using Sub-Watt Thermal Energy Harvesting should grow from 100 000 units in 2014 to 9 million units by 2020.4
