Subaru Impreza 2.5 WRX MY06-on THE 2.5L MY06 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX What makes it different? The MY06 model is a big step forward for Subaru, the first time a turbo 2.5L engine has been seen in the WRX range. Essentially it appears to have been carried over with only minor changes from the version seen in the MY04-05 XT Forester (and from what we can gather through testing – even closer again to the current MY06 XT Forester models). The increase in capacity compared to the earlier 2.0L MY93-05 model WRX’s gives the WRX a level of lag free responsiveness not seen from the factory in this model before. For the technically minded, the MY06 WRX has the following features (some completely new, some carried over from earlier models):

• Power is 169kw at 5600rpm (up 1kw) and torque 320Nm at 3600rpm (up around 20Nm and arriving earlier in the rev range). 0-100 km/h time is quoted at 5.9 sec by Subaru.

• Revised variable inlet cam timing (AVCS), with the ECU having the option of using up to 3 separate AVCS control maps at its discretion, with up to 35 deg of camshaft advance depending on operating conditions.

• Turbo is the same TD04L as seen on the previous version WRX, but used with the larger capacity 2.5L engine means its peak efficiency is now lower in the rev range at lower boost pressure compared to the earlier 2.0L models. Peak target boost pressure is 13.5PSi, arriving earlier in the rev range than seen on earlier models.

• 5 speed manual transmission (auto transmission no longer available) uses 8 bell housing bolts for improved rigidity, and cold forging and shot peen hardening process is used on gears to improve durability compared to MY05 unit. It is still however nowhere near as strong as the STi 6 speed transmissions! Centre differential torque split is still 50/50 front to rear on the WRX.

• Intercooler size has been increased by 64mm in width and number of cooling tubes increased from 29 to 38 compared to MY05 WRX model. Total cooling capacity is now 11.9kw (reference to intercoolers ability to remove heat from intake charge air NOT reference to increase or change in engine power). For reference the TMIC on the MY06 STi is virtually unchanged from earlier model and has total cooling capacity of 14.0kw. Luckily we are already working on a replacement intercooler which has higher capacity, flow rate and heat rejection capabilities than BOTH which should be ready by the time you read this!

Exterior changes are several and include revised styling with new headlights (HID Xenon lights fitted as standard for the first time in Australia), revised wheel styling (although same 215/45/R17 size is used) and revised spoiler package. Having said that, at this stage we are more concerned with how the car performs and will stay focused on the mechanical package, along with the improvements that can be made in performance and efficiency! THE STORY SO FAR Back in early 2003, after months of dedicated testing, we released a set of kits suitable for MY99-05 WRX owners aimed at giving the best bang for buck possible. Involving a combination of ECU retuning and bolt on modifications, various levels of guaranteed power gains became available at a highly competitive cost. Thousands of happy customers later, these kits are still going strong and are still available in the same form today. Testimony to the strength of the original kit design is that to date there has not been any customers not receive the gains promised. Nor, should we add, have there been any engine failures attributed to an XA, XB or XC kit.

Just to refresh some memories, results of the MY03 WRX vehicle used in the original article (and repeated on many more MY99-on models since!) were as follows:

XA Kit (20kw at wheels gain) XB Kit (40kw at wheels gain) XC Kit (55kw at wheels gain) All testing, development, tuning and verifications of results has been (and continues to be) completed on our 4WD Dynapack Chassis Dyno. We won’t go into full detail here as many readers will already know the benefits of this type of dyno through our prior articles. However, if interested you can see further information on the dyno we use at http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/dynapack.htm.

THE STANDARD CAR Volumes have been written about the WRX in its various forms, so much so that we won’t go into graphic detail here. For those of you who are new to the WRX, or haven’t understood anything we have written to this point, check out the Subaru Performance Handbook of the 3rd Edition Training WRX book. Information on the book itself can be found on our website at http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/wrxbook.htm and you can also follow the links to purchase a copy online if you wish. LET THE MODIFICATIONS BEGIN!

In looking to improve performance, there are several areas that need attention - the key aim is to improve the efficiency of the whole package in order to achieve well balanced results. Unfortunately the days of simply bolting an exhaust system on to your WRX and seeing good gains in performance are long gone. In order to achieve good, reliable gains in performance (especially with later WRX models, the MY06 being no exception), the factory engine management system needs to be recalibrated to suit the combination of parts fitted to the car (whether this be near standard or heavily modified).

Often the improvements in efficiency needed to gain additional performance also have added “side effects” such as mild improvements in fuel consumption (when driven sensibly we might add!). As with all prior kits we have developed, the primary aim is maximum improvement in performance, responsiveness and drivability, without any effect on reliability.

WHY ECUTEK COMPARED TO OTHER ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS? Some people prefer to remove the factory system and fit a complete replacement engine management system; however this is not our preferred option for several reasons. In the interest of saving space, we won’t go into detail on the general benefits of retuning your existing factory ECU here, but much more detailed information can be found on the website at http://www.ecutek.com.au/ if you need further information. Quickly for the uninitiated, EcuTeK is a software upgrade which is performed on your standard computer, allowing us (and your local authorised MRT/EcuTeK Distributor) the ability to adjust ALL parameters of the factory ECU. There are no wiring changes, no additional hardware changes and most importantly, NO loss of factory features such as variable cam control, electronic throttle control, automatic factory ignition timing and boost safety measures such as active knock control, etc. This is important because:

• Interceptor style engine management system modifications do not have the ability to control more complex features such as active knock control, AVCS (variable cam control) or electronic throttle control, etc. They can also interfere quite heavily with the factory ECU’s safety measures (e.g. ignition timing reduction, boost control, etc) should something not be going according to plan (for example detection of detonation by the factory ECU due to bad quality fuel).

• Complete replacement aftermarket systems generally do not have

anywhere near the level of functionality of the factory ECU, so most will not control or allow access to adjust things like variable cam control or electronic throttle control. Exceptions to this are high end management systems such as some Motec and Autronic systems, however these are often very expensive to acquire and setup on the car, and tune to factory drivability levels.

And of course, cold starts, idle control and factory drivability remain when simply adjusting what the OEM engineers have already spent thousands of hours tuning.

We have used EcuTek software to reprogram the factory engine management system on everything from standard cars right through to heavily modified cars (with enlarged engine capacity running massive turbo and intercooler combinations and nitrous <!> of all things), without any issues at all. The owner of the S202 STi that won Targa in 2004 and owners of several winning GTP WRX’s (all using EcuTek enhanced ECU’s) will also agree. ☺

FUEL ECONOMY When you think of modifying your car, one of the major things that will run though your mind is the potential effect on the use of fuel. Often misunderstood, fuel efficiency need not necessarily be sacrificed.

Generally in achieving more performance from your car, we need to make the engine operate more efficiently. In doing this, your engine doesn’t work as hard to deliver the same level of performance you presently have. In most cases when modified components are fitted and tuned correctly, fuel consumption doesn’t change and in some cases actual

gets better based on your use of the car. Many customers have commented on a positive improvement with fuel economy. This is the benefit of properly designed components working together in harmony as a complete solution.

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY Be sure you get what you pay for! With the success of the MRT Power kits, some companies try to pass off inferior parts and options that vary from the proven results that can only achieved with genuine MRT parts and EcuTeK technology. You can count on 100% support from MRT when you use, and insist on, the exact components detailed herein. With each tune/upgrade completed you will be provided with a certificate of authenticity that is individually numbered to show what was completed on your car. To register it, simply complete the (detachable) feedback details and pop it in the post.

FACTORY WARRANTY GUARANTEE The warranty you get when you purchase a new car has a value and MRT recognise that. The manufacturer of your car provides very specific details on what they cover and under what conditions you can rely on covering any issues experienced with your car. Expecting them to cover parts that they haven’t fitted, or rectify issues caused by aftermarket parts, is a little unreasonable. By carefully choosing the right parts and matching them with the right ECU tune, you can rely on having the right support. Your MRT power kit “Factory Warranty Guarantee” not only covers all work completed by us or one of our resellers, it also covers any issues that arise with parts directly related to the parts we fit within the same terms as your factory warranty. Please note this guarantee is supported by MRT, its resellers and associated referring dealerships. It is NOT connected to Subaru Australia.

MY06 IMPREZA WRX – XA Kit The XA Kit is designed as an entry level starting point for those on a budget looking for a boost in performance over what was delivered from the factory. As with the earlier model WRX, minor modifications give noticeable gains in performance and responsiveness around town. The modifications listed in this kit option are designed to focus on the key areas needed to give the best possible bang for buck! The following modifications are completed with the XA Kit: ~ Replacement of the standard muffler with a new stainless steel high flowing 3” muffler from the rear flange back. With the use of a specially designed adaptor flange, the new muffler is fitted up to the standard mounting points with no modifications and fits to the standard Impreza centre pipe. ~ A new reusable flat panel filter (either K&N or Unifilter) is used inside the standard airbox, and the resonant box inside the inner guard is removed to allow more air to reach the factory airbox. ~ To take advantage of the improvements in air flow, the factory ECU was remapped with alterations made to fuel, ignition timing, boost, electronic throttle control settings and more. It is important to note that gains are NOT made simply by winding up the boost!! The XA kit runs near factory boost pressures (between 0-0.5 Psi increase only)!!

With the above modifications in place and extensive recalibration of the factory engine management system on both dyno and road, the following gains were achieved:

Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au 7/15 Revised 22 Feb 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX MY06

Improvements were seen across the entire rev range, with the most notable being up to a 35% increase in mid range torque. Power was also now up between 15-25kw all the way from 2800rpm through to redline! On the road the increase in low-mid range torque was immediately noticeable with the car feeling much more responsive with virtually no lag in just about all gears! The other big change to note was that the “hole” in factory torque from 3000-3600rpm had also been rectified, further explaining the cars huge transformation in feel on the road. As previously stated, the above was also achieved with only a 0.5 Psi increase in peak boost pressure!! On the day of dyno testing it was a typical warmish Summer day in Sydney with ambient temps in the dyno room of around 32 Deg C (dyno logged engine bay inlet air temps of 38-39 Deg C), and relatively low humidity. Fuel used was 98 RON Shell Optimax (although 98 RON Mobil Synergy 8000 and Caltex Vortex 98 should also be used for similar results). The gains so far were already ahead of our expectations. Now the real fun was to begin…

DYNO TIME? When you choose a MRT Power kit, you can rest easy. All the test mapping and r/d is already been done. Hundreds of hours on our dyno, road and the track means piece of mind for you. The cost of all this would be a needless investment for you to repeat on your car, it would simply not be worth it. However you can relax in the comfort that all this data and our experience gained is included of the upgrade that you get as part of this kit. You do have the option for a “before and after” dyno power run, or a custom tune to maximize your particular cars output (every car varies and your car may allow slight extra output), however this is an optional extra.

MY06 IMPREZA WRX – XB Kit Of the many possible modifications, the XB Kit has been the biggest seller on the previous WRX models due to the strong performance gains achieved for minimal cash outlay. With the results on the MY06 model so far, we were all looking forward to what could be achieved with a similar level modifications. The XB kit on the MY06 2.5L model consists of the following modifications: ~ Upgrade to full 3” exhaust system from the turbo back, including high flow catalytic converter and specially designed housing with splitter utilized in the dump pipe off the back of the turbine housing for improved response and minimal lag. A centre resonator can also be fitted (slight additional cost over base kit price) for clients wishing to keep the exhaust note as quiet as possible. ~ Further extensive dyno testing and tuning with the factory ECU recalibrated with a more aggressive level of tune, ideal for taking advantage of the additional air flow and improvements in efficiency made possible with the full exhaust system in place. This included further changes to the fuel, ignition timing, active cam control settings and boost control, with peak target boost now set to 14.5 Psi. In previous XB kits we have looked at replacing the factory airbox with a polished cold air pipe (with filter moved to inside the inner guard). However with the new MY06 kits a decision was made to retain the factory airbox (with minor intake modifications to improve airflow as utilized in the XA kit) in order to keep the car as close to standard appearance as possible. Retaining the factory airbox also helps keep induction noise levels down, and testing showed that moving to a full replacement (best flow possible) intake would only yield mild gains of a handful of KW at peak levels. With the additional exhaust components and further tuning work undertaken, improvements were again immediately noticeable:

Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au 9/15 Revised 22 Feb 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX MY06

The results here even surprised us, with low to mid range torque now up by as much as 42% over the factory car!! Peak power was up through much of the rev range by around 35kw, although above 5000rpm it was now clear that the turbo simply couldn’t flow the air required to sustain boost pressures and the torque curve. And before you ask “why don’t you just crank the boost up more?” at 14.5 Psi the turbo was already well and truly at its max efficiency level. More boost would simply stress the turbo and superheat air, meaning no additional power gains, greater risk of detonation and reduced turbo longevity! With the car in its current form, peak torque was available at just under 3000rpm and peak power held from 4400-6000rpm. Massive gains are seen in nearly all areas across the rev range in both torque and power, and this is replicated on the road with the WRX now noticeably faster in all gears. Feedback from owners of test vehicles (and several magazine tests) has also been as positive as the results above suggest! Even better yet, this is only one step up from the entry level kit – in this round of testing there is still one more set of modifications to go…commonly referred to as the XC Kit… Pic: Complete exhaust fitted.

MY06 IMPREZA WRX – XC Kit With the testing in the previous kit, the main weakness was shown to be the small factory turbo. This was the most obvious thing that needed to change in the quest for more power. The MY06 WRX runs larger injectors than the earlier 2.0L model WRX’s as standard fitment, so injector duty cycles were still well within safe margins. Testing showed there was no need to make any other modifications to the fuel setup other than replacement of the factory fuel pump to a higher flowing unit.

The modifications in this kit include the items from the XB kit listed previously plus the following:

~ Replacement of factory TD04 with new IHI VF30 (VF34 is optional). The aim with this size turbo is to minimize any increases in lag, whilst maximize flow at higher rpm levels.

~ Replacement in tank 500hp fuel pump was also fitted to ensure adequate fuel flow/pressure.

~ ECU is further remapped again to suit the vastly different flow characteristics of the larger VF30 turbo, with peak target boost now also rising to a maximum of 16 Psi (being the safe limitation of factory engine internals). Fuel and ignition timing were altered further, and adjustments made to the variable cam timing and boost control systems to assist responsiveness with the larger turbo. In past experience with 2.5L capacity Subaru’s (Forester XT, retrofitted 2.5L bottom ends to earlier model WRX and STi cars, etc), fitment of a larger turbo really sees them come alive through the mid range. In this case, the MY06 WRX was no different with solid gains to be seen across the board, with no increase in lag over the standard car. The larger turbo truly takes advantage of what the 2500cc motor has to offer in terms of mid range grunt. Lag has increased marginally over the XB kit (as you would expect it to with the increase in turbo size) with good usable torque now coming with a rush around 2500rpm on the street. Funnily enough while the car feels slightly laggier at low rpm compared to the XB Kit, it actually still has more torque at lower rpm than the standard car!! The massive amounts of mid range torque on tap slightly further up the rev range just make it feel lower than it really is! The new turbo, fuel system modifications and further revised mapping has transformed the new MY06 into an outstandingly quick car for road use (or occasional track days).

Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au 11/15 Revised 22 Feb 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX MY06

The levels of modification completed at this point were getting close the limits of several factory components. Engine internals (including rods and pistons), fuel injector sizing, and standard intercooler flow and heat rejection capacity were all nearing their design limitations and would require replacement with stronger aftermarket items if in the quest for more power. The standard intercooler in particular is heavily prone to heat soak if the car is used on the occasional track day or taken on an extended “spirited” street drive, etc. A replacement larger aftermarket top mounted intercooler is highly recommended if this is the intended use with the car. With all of this additional performance on tap at such a competitive price, who needs a STi? ☺ For full details of kit pricing and specifications, please refer to the last page for further information.

MUFFLER OPTIONS MRT offer several options with your power kit upgrade depending on your preference for exhaust note. In other words, do you want quiet or loud?

• Our regular 3” rear muffler offers great performance whilst maintaining a great sporty exhaust note with good looks. This system is louder than the factory OEM system, but only marginally so.

• The cannon muffler is for owners who want to enjoy the full boxer beat of Subaru’s legendary exhaust note. Great sound, but will wake up your neighbours if you come home late!

• The twin outlet muffler is also an option, but will cost a little extra as it’s a complicated design. • A final option is choosing to have your STI or (single tip) WRX tail pipe cover refitted to your

new MRT muffler. This gives the ultimate stealth look. (a small cost applies for the added labour) You have the choice of either. If you find it hard to decide, choose one and if within 5 days you want to

swap for the other, pleases contact us and we can arrange a time to swap them for you. There is no additional parts costs however in some cases a small labour charge may apply. MRT’s 3 inch outlet. (Quiet option) MRT’s 4 inch outlet. Cannon (Loud option) MRT’s Twin 2 ¼ inch outlet. (Quiet option)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do the modifications void my new car warranty? (Also refer the details on the Factory Warranty Guarantee listed separately in this document) One of the most common queries we get in relation to performance upgrades on new models is the potential effects on factory warranty. To that extent, Subaru retains the right to refuse claims on warranty where the item being claimed on has been modified or changed from factory specification. However, to date we are yet to have any vehicle fitted with one of the MRT Power Kit upgrades fail as a direct result of the improvements made, with hundreds of kits supplied and fitted to date Australia wide. We also offer a warranty against manufacturer defect on all parts we supply. We also spend countless hours on research and development of parts, tuning, and the associated effects of these changes on the rest of the vehicle. If I have one type of kit, can I upgrade at a later stage if I want more? Easily! All of our parts are designed to be compatible with other items. For example if you have the XA kit, upgrading to the XB kit consists of adding a new engine and centre pipe to the muffler you already have on the car, adding the cold air intake and retuning the ECU accordingly. The cost to upgrade depends on what parts you already have fitted. As a guide it’s generally around the difference in price between your kit and the next + any additional labour associated with the changeover that isn’t covered in the kit. How long does the work take? Both the XA and XB kits can be completed within 1 day. The XC kit requires 1½ days due to the considerable amount of parts requiring fitment. When booking your car with us (or your local authorised outlet) the total time your vehicle is required will be reconfirmed for you as well.

Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au 14/15 Revised 22 Feb 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX MY06

I have already made some modifications, can I get the same results as seen above? A lot of customers perform modifications in stages, partly due to budget constraints and partly because it starts in stages and then the bug bites and performance becomes an obsession. All of the modifications listed above can be performed around what you already have. Depending on the quality and type of items fitted, we will get performance gains as close as feasible to the above. Of course to make sure you get the gains the vehicle is capable of, just make sure you use MRT parts from the beginning! ☺ Will my ECU still allow me to service my car with a dealer? We would like you to choose us or your local reseller for your regular servicing. Should you choose not to, there is absolutely no reason your local Subaru Dealer can’t complete your scheduled servicing or running factory diagnostics equipment. Additionally if they reset your ECU it will still retain its “enhanced” settings. Where can I get the work done? Any authorised MRT/EcuTek reseller can easily complete the above work for you, or assist in designing a series of modifications around your requirements. For further information and contact details please check out our website at http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/dealers.htm. Of course if you have any other queries that we have missed, or need further information either give us a call directly at our new premises on (02) 9767 4545 or get in touch with your local reseller.
