BC Ferries is building 3 new ferries with LNG fuel proposition capacity, first ferry to arrive in 2016

Priority actions in this plan are key to our transportation investments and strategic policy actions over the next 10 years. This plan will enhance our safety, mobility and connectivity, allowing us to keep pace with our many expanding sectors and ensuring that our transportation improvements remain affordable.

Rehabilitation Highways, Bridges and Side Roads
Rehabilitation Program delivered over $300 million, over 230 projects across B.C. (40 highway resurfacing projects, 30 bridge projects, 160 side road and oil and gas improvements projects)
Developing a plan with FLNRO and MoE to explore opportunities to maintain public access to resource and back-country roads
Upgraded over 20 rest areas throughout B.C., including the Kalamalka Lake Rest Area along Highway 97
Improving Highway Safety
Road Safety Improvement Program invested $30 million in over 70 projects across B.C.
Invested $10 million to make safety improvements at 5 intersections
Installed variable speed signs and wildlife detection signs. Both signage systems are now in testing stage
Working with provincial policing agencies and other incident-response partners to reduce the duration of highway closures
Undertaking a review in partnership with provincial policing agencies of traffic management and safety aspects associated with pulling drivers over in traffic
Enhanced Driver Information Systems by adding over 25 new cameras, providing 60 new highway webcam views
Developed and implemented strategies for improving roadside worker safety through an update to the Traffic Management Manual
Implemented legislation for passing lanes – keep right, let others pass
Implemented legislations for municipalities to allow motorcycle parking near intersections
New regulations introduced to clarify the definition of winter tires and traction devices
Working with ICBC to explore opportunities to allow drivers more choices to use slow-moving vehicles and other mobility devices in smaller communities
Improved public safety in B.C.’s “party bus” and limousine industry by introducing special authorization licenses to increase the accountability of operators

Delivering a Provincial Trucking Strategy
Upgraded 10 major bridges throughout the interior and northern B.C. to accommodate increasingly heavy and large loads
Worked with industry to expand 85-metric-tonne and develop 125-metric-tonne load corridors: Highway 16 from Port of Prince Rupert to Alberta Border (complete), Highway 1 and 5 from Vancouver Ports to Highway 16 (in development), Highway 97 from Prince George to Ft. St. John (in development)
Streamlined permiting through a fee issue and fine update, and the piloting of a new truck permitting system Spring 2016
9 new truck inspection pullouts built, 1 new truck parking area is under construction and a shortlist of other sites has been created
Review and updating of the Pilot Car Guidelines is underway
Additional resources have been added to the Office of the Independent Container Trucking Commissioner to support auditing, enforcement and licensing
Investing in Transit
A three-year contribution agreement has been finalized with BC Transit to ensure the highest level of operating support for transit in Canada
25 replacement buses added this year, and over 125 regular and mini-buses have been ordered
Partnered with local communities to build: 15 bus pullouts, 8 new bus shelters, 9 wheelchair accessible sidewalk/bus pads, 3 upgraded signage systems and 2 park and ride facilities
25 CNG buses deployed in Kamloops
TransLink is developing business case to support federal funding for the Pattullo Bridge
Investing in Cycling
BikeBC contributed $6 million to 26 projects in 25 municipalities
Widening of shoulder on Highway 14 is complete and provisions for additional sweeping are planned to be included in new maintenance contract language
Implemented signage for the South Okanagan Cycling Network in Kamloops
Investing in Airports
Contributed $6 million to 10 airports across B.C., including the Long Beach Airport in Tofino and New West Regional Airport in Terrace
Consulted with aviation stakeholders, including Transport Canada to identify needs and opportunities
Working with the inter-governmental aviation working group to enhance B.C.’s aviation sector
Enabling Efficient Ports and Rail
Studies underway to determine potential infrastructure upgrades to support LNG
New governance structure recommended for the Port of Kitimat
Studies underway in the lower mainland, in collaboration with Greater Vancouver gateway partners, to identify potential infrastructure for upgrades
Philip Avenue Road/Rail Overpass completed in the District of North Vancouver to enhance efficiency of goods movement
