SECOND READING Psalm 137: 1-6

SERMON Babylon

*HYMN 2182 When God Restored Our Common Life (Sing the Faith)

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (edited from the Book of Order)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We proclaim Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen One, confessing him as Lord to the glory of God the Father. In the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we proclaim Jesus as the Lord of the church, the Head over all things, the beginning of a new creation. We acknowledge that we live between the time of Christ's resurrection and the final consummation of all things which he will bring. We are a people who journey towards His promise. Christ feeds us with word and sacrament, and we have the gift of the Spirit so that we may not lose our way.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE It is Well With My Soul Youth Bells

*CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,

God’s mercies never come to an end. People: They are new every morning:

Great is God’s faithfulness. Leader: “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul.

Therefore all my hope is in God. People: Praise the Lord!

For God’s steadfast love endures forever!

*HYMN 276 Great is Thy Faithfulness

*CALL TO CONFESSION

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION O God of every blessing, you invite us into a life of deep meaning and purpose, a life of loving goodness and faithfulness. We hear your invitation but are often distracted by other invitations to things that don’t satisfy, things that waste our energy and our purpose. O God, renew your call within us. Cleanse our lives with your mercy, that our hearts may be restored and our lives reclaimed by your forgiveness and grace. In Christ’s name, we pray.

Please observe a moment of silent confession.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen.

*THE PEACE Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you!

Please share the peace of Christ with those near you.

*RESPONSE OF PRAISE (Hymn 93, v 4) Therefore, dear Jesus, since I cannot pay You. I do adore You, and will ever praise You, Think on Your pity and Your love unswerving, Not my deserving.
