More is better – Jay gets greedy with the peanuts! Jack Antinore of Holley, a retired social worker from Lakeside Beikirch Care Center, enjoys watching and feeding the birds, especially in winter. Of this season’s experience he writes: The 2’ by 3’ platform feeder I built, along with the standard feeder attached in the middle has been a true boon to bird feeding and watching. I won the Blue Jays’ hearts long ago with my raw, in-the-shell peanuts. I’m on my third 25lb. bag for this season (I order 50lbs. at a time from Richmond, Virginia). I added raw shelled peanuts and striped sunfl ower seed to attract the Cardinals and that is very successful. I have at least two male cardinals and four females loving those two food additions. I have both Red-Bellied and Downy Woodpeckers enjoying the several suet feeders on and near the platform feeder. The few European Starlings seem to favor the suet as well. I have many of the smaller birds coming -- Sparrows, Finches and the like. I’m on my fourth 40lb. bag of a quality blended wild bird food, used about half of a 50lb. bag of black oil sunfl ower seed, 10lbs. of raw shelled peanuts (just started them recently for the Cardinals) and about 15lbs. of striped sunfl ower seed. I’ve also gone through about 25 suet cakes but I can’t get to all my suet cages as the snow is too high now. I am having a ball watching the birds and helping them through a very tough winter. I even have some American Crows hitting the suet and grabbing both kinds of peanuts. I won’t even start about the squirrels …

Suburban News - South Edition - February 22, 2015 3Parma studies solar possibilitiesby Kristina Gabalski
On a cold, dark evening in early Febru-ary, members of the Parma Town Board learned more about how the sun can help the town cut energy costs.
Chad Laurent, senior consultant and general counsel for NY-Sun PV Trainers Network and Emily Chessin, a consultant for Meister Consultants Group, gave a vir-tual presentation on Solar PV Feasibility for the Town of Parma on Tuesday, Febru-gary 3.
“I attended a solar energy seminar in November, about the potential for towns like Parma,” Supervisor Jim Smith said prior to the presentation. He noted munic-ipalities are now turning to solar energy to power municipal buildings by constructing solar farms.
During the presentation, Emily Ches-sin said now is a good time for Parma to consider going solar due to, “... high energy costs, the falling cost of solar technology, favorable regulations and aggressive in-centives.”
She noted Solar PV costs dropped 47 percent between 2010 and 2014 - from $7/watt to less than $4/watt.
Chessin also explained that if Parma decides to go solar, it could send extra elec-tricity not being used onsite back in to the electric grid in exchange for credits on the town’s utility bill. Those credits, “... can be used to offset future electricity demand,” she said.
A municipality typically partners with a third party to construct and operate a solar farm. The town and developer set up a, “... power purchase agreement,” Chessin said. “The town purchases electricity from the installer at a pre-determined price ... the developer is responsible for operations.”
Chad Laurent of NYSERDA’s NY-Sun PV Trainers Network, said municipalities typically install solar panels on places like roof tops, capped landfills and even brown-fields. He also noted there is no reason to wait for newer technology to come along as solar can easily be updated, “You could swap out panels,” Laurent noted, “it’s very modular technology.”
Laurent said the town would see energy payback in two years or less in their in-vestment in solar.
He noted solar power can, “... help to
meet municipal renewable energy goals,” with savings of, “... 17 to 30 percent off cur-rent electricity rates.”
Laurent said the process of going solar can take six to eight months and that the next step for the town would be to, “... set a realistic timeline based on regulatory re-quirements.”
Supervisor Jim Smith told the Subur-ban News/ The Herald, “The town board is very interested and I am planning on working toward getting an RFQ put to-gether.”
The Town of Williamson in Wayne Coun-ty has a solar array located on the closed Williamson landfill. According to published reports, town officials there estimate a savings of about $1 million over 25 years. Williamson is the first town in New York State to power all town-owned facilities by solar energy. Included is their water plant, wastewater treatment plant, highway ga-rage, and town office complex.
Parma Home Energy Workshop setThe public is invited to a free Home Ener-gy Workshop and Solar (Panel) PV Basics presentation on Wednesday, March 4 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Parma Town Hall.
The Pathstone home energy workshop includes program and eligibility informa-tion, energy education and application as-sistance.
Homeowners and landlords will learn how they can qualify for a free or reduced cost energy audit and receive up to $5,000 ($10,000 for landlords) in grants from the New York State Energy Research and De-velopment Authority (NYSERDA) to make energy improvements.
Low interest loans are also available through Pathstone Enterprise Center for any additional improvements.
Also on March 4, NYSERDA’s NY-Sun PV Trainers Network will present a one-hour virtual presentation on solar PV basics including Solar (Panel) PV technol-ogy and how it can reduce your electric bill; considerations for installing solar at your home; and state and federal solar PV policies and incentives to help lower home-owner costs.
The presentation will help participants feel more comfortable with solar PV and the process of going solar for their home energy needs.
March Madness returns to Churchville-ChiliA type of “March Madness” will return
as the 17th annual basketball game be-tween the Churchville-Chili LEO Club and the Churchville Lions Club is sched-uled for Sunday, March 1. Game time is 1 p.m. at the Churchville Middle School gym C (enter from Fairbanks Road through door #37).
This increasingly popular event will be for the benefit of the Tim Miller family. Tim is a math teacher at the Middle School and has been the varsity boys basketball coach for the past 10 years. Tim has also been very active in the district and community with many basketball and recreational camps and teaching seminars. Tim’s wife is seriously ill with breast cancer and Tim has taken a leave of absence while he cares for her and their two young children, Sloan age 7, and JP, who is 4. Both teams will be joined by teachers and coaches, stu-dents in the school basketball programs as well as members of the Churchville Fire Department.
Donations will be accepted by members of the LEO Club, Lions Club or Fire De-partment. They can also be mailed to the Churchville-Chili LEO Club at the Middle School, 139 Fairbanks Road, Churchville.

ADVANCE PLANNING
www.burgerfuneralhome.com
Planning and prearranging your own funeral enables you to make thoughtful and informed decisions that spare your family from having to make important choices for you. Without previous arrangements in place, survivors must make decisions under the stresses of time limitations and strong emotions. In the small window of time between the death of a loved one and burial or cremation, surviving family members may be forced to decide where the body will be buried, entombed, or scattered, as well as purchase a burial plot or grave without the benefit of having visited them. It makes far better sense to preplan your own funeral after having given careful consideration
to this important matter. Prearrangement is also the more thoughtful option.
Advance funeral planning has been called “a sincere act of love” because it can help ease an emotional burden on those you love. By recording your wishes, you help guide your survivors and allow them to spend time supporting each other instead of worrying about what you would have wanted. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Urban-Suburban program on Spencerport Board’s Feb. 24 agendaby Kristina Gabalski
The Spencerport Central School Board of Education is expected to make its de-termination regarding participation in the Urban-Suburban program during its meeting on Tuesday, February 24 at 7 p.m. at Cosgrove Middle School Auditorium.
The proposal has sparked heated debate over the past two-and-a-half months and one resident who is opposed to Spencerport joining the program says he is not happy with how public comment was handled at the February 3 public information meet-ing held at Spencerport High School.
“When people signed up to speak, they were asked if they were for or against (Ur-ban-Suburban) ... the people who were for spoke first,” he says. “They shouldn’t have been asked if they were for or against.”
He is also concerned that the first elev-en speakers, whom the district asked to present their perspectives on Urban-Sub-urban, all spoke in favor of the program, noting that by the time any concerns were
expressed about the program, “.... most people had gone home.” Public comment began around 8:30 p.m. during the meet-ing on February 3.
“We are not going to let up,” he says in the fight against Spencerport joining Ur-ban-Suburban, “... residents do not want the program.”
Spencerport School District officials tell the Suburban News those who commented at the February 3 meeting were called in the order of how they signed-in, just as the privilege-of-the-floor was handled at the December 9 meeting.
The names of those who wanted to speak were taken and the time they signed-in was noted. As it happened, the first several speakers to sign in were for the program. The district notes that at the December 9 meeting, the first speakers happened to be those who were against Urban-Suburban.
District Officials add that Ty Zinkiewich, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, who called public comment speakers to the podium February 3, did not know their
position on the issue when he called their name.
The district has provided three opportu-nities for public input on the proposal - De-cember 2 during an informational meeting, December 9 during the Board of Education meeting and February 3 at the additional public information meeting.
The administration has stated all re-marks will be incorporated as part of pub-lic input, “... we realize the importance of engaging the community and encouraging a continued and respectful dialog about the Urban-Suburban Inter-District Trans-fer program,” the district states on the Spencerport Schools website.
At the end of the February 3 informa-tional meeting, School Board President William Sweeney said privilege-of-the-floor would be held to 30 minutes at the upcoming February 24 School Board meet-ing.
There are many in the community who would like to see a public vote on joining Urban-Suburban.
A petition is being circulated in the com-munity calling on the district to hold a public vote on the proposal.
Noting people in the community both for and against joining Urban-Suburban, “want to have the final say,” Tom Mawn, a district resident spear-heading the peti-tion says he hopes the district might put the issue on the ballot in May during the school budget/board of education vote. He says even if the issue can not be put to a public vote, residents want the school board to understand the number of people who would like to have a direct say in the matter. Mawn says the petition is on the change.org website.
Residents are expected to present the petition to the board at the February 24 meeting.
School Board President William Swee-ney has said a vote on the issue would not be possible because there is, “... not gov-ernmental structure,” in the district to ac-commodate it.

Winter fun! When Spencerport native Thayne Conrad and his wife, Eve, planned a winter visit to Thayne’s mother and step dad, Barbara and Michael Flavin of Coleman Avenue, Spencerport, he hoped there would be snow for winter fun for everyone. Arriving February 12 from Atlanta, Georgia, Thayne and Eve and their children, Grace and Hayden, were greeted by the mid-February snow machine pumping a foot or more of snow and near zero temperatures – they soon found out there was plenty of winter weather to be experienced. After some runs at the Northampton ski hill, Hayden and his cousin, Chase, from Pittsford (above), make their plan to use the building aspects of mounds of snow in the Flavins’ front yard to construct a tunnel from here to there. During their stay, the elder Conrads enjoyed a Valentine’s weekend visit to a B&B in the Finger Lakes and everyone took in an Amerks game. When the thermometer plummeted to zero February 15 and the wind chill was recorded at -25 degrees, the family turned to other area activities on their list of must-do’s when they visit western New York – such as shopping at the Book Centre and a stop at the House of Guitars and ordering a favorite summertime-tested pizza variety from a Spencerport village shop.
Sharpe, Henshaw pace Blue Devilsby Warren Kozireski
Senior Dylan Sharpe and junior Mitchell Henshaw each had one goal and one assist as Brockport avenged an earlier defeat with a 5-1 win over Spencerport in high school hockey.(2.10.15)
Sharpe got his stick on a Henshaw point shot to stake the Blue Devils to a 1-0 lead at 6:30 of the first period.
The second power play unit made it 2-0 at 13:33 of the first as Koby Dusett converted off passes from Andrew Harley and Josh Hettinger.
“We were working with our second power play unit in practice just yesterday and it paid off,” Brockport head coach Greg Stahl said.
It was the special teams again in the second period that came through as Matt Roe on the left point put an inno-cent looking shot just inside the left post to increase the lead to 3-0.
With just 1:11 remaining in the second period, Carlton Ekiyor had a breakaway he was able to convert in spite
of being slashed from behind to extend the Blue Devils lead to 4-0.
In the third period, Henshaw caught the Rangers goal-tender without his stick and was able to deke around and score on the backhand with assists from Sharpe and Kir-by Trask to make it 5-0.
Spencerport spoiled the shutout bid with a goal in the final two minutes as Brandon Corey tipped the shot from Tyler Decosse from the right point past the goaltender. Defenseman Max Moran was also credited with an as-sist.
Riley Emmerson was credited with 34 saves for the Blue Devils.
Brockport seniors Roe, Ekiyor, Trask, Hettinger, Jack Moore and Harley were all honored prior to the game.
Anten double-double bails out Cadetsby Warren Kozireski
Lauren Anten celebrated her final regular season home game in grand fashion with a double-double including the game-winner on a turnaround jumper from the right base-line with the shot clock winding down as Hilton downed Gates Chili 52-46 in girls basketball. (2.10.15)
Aside from Anten, Michaela Timmons, Brynn Gay and Erin O’Toole were other seniors honored prior to the game.
The Cadets led by seven points after the first quarter, but watched that lead diminish to just three points at the half.
They then managed just eight points offensively over the entire third quarter as Gates-Chili built their own seven-point advantage.
But the Cadets outscored the Spartans 17-4 during the final eight minutes, including the final 12 points of the contest to eke out the win.
Down by six with four minutes remaining, Anten hit a pair of lay-ups sandwiching an inbounds field goal by Cameron Graupman to tie the game 46-46 with 2:12 re-maining.
Anten’s game-winning shot came with 53 seconds left and Graupman sealed the victory with a steal at the de-fensive end and by going 4-for-4 from the free throw line down the stretch.
“Our third quarter was reminiscent of our loss in the playoffs to Victor,” Hilton head coach Jeff Eichas said. “Anten bailed us out and we pulled through.”
Anten finished with 24 points and ten rebounds, Graupman had 16 points while sophomores Allison Strauss and Brienne Stike had five and four points re-spectively.
The Cadets had two games remaining in the regular season (at that point) and were on pace for a fourth seed in the Section V playoffs, which would give them a first round bye and a second round home game in the play-offs.

Helping Out - Eleven-year-old Timothy Chaney helps out in his grandmother’s, (Linda LaGorio) neighborhood in Hilton by shoveling out a buried fire hydrant. “He’s a great boy and loves to help,” says his mother, Tracey LaGorio. “He was the first child in Hilton to receive the ‘Do The Right Thing’ award for saving my life when I had a diabetic incident. He also volunteers in the apple crisp booth at Hilton Apple Fest.” Officials say that shoveling a fire hydrant and making it easier to access saves valuable time for firefighters. Provided photo.

Saints winon senior nightby Warren Kozireski
Churchville-Chili shot 15-of-18 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to overcome what was a ten-point deficit and defeat Brockport 52-50 in girls basketball on the Saints’ senior night.
A see-saw second quarter featured eight lead changes and results in a 22-21 Brockport lead at the half.
The Blue Devils built a ten point advantage in the third quarter with Rachel Benedict and Brionna Blocker accounting for a combined ten points.
But the Saints closed the third quarter on a 6-0 run to tighten the game back up on a free throw by Jessica Hyde plus field goals from Mara Zimmerman and Brooke Ennis.
The Blue Devils held their lead through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before the Saints tied the game on a drive by seventh-grader Emily Tabone and took the lead on a lay-up by Hyde with 4:07 remaining.
The remainder of their points came from the free throw line as Ennis, Tabone, Hyde and Skylar Burgess shot a combined 12-of-14 in the closing minutes.
Tabone, playing in just her sixth varsity game after being called up from the JV squad, led the Saints with 14 points. Hyde finished with 13 points, Ennis 11 points with five rebounds and Burgess had a team-high five steals to go with five rebounds and six points.
Blocker led the Blue Devils with 23 points, Benedict had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, Bryn Hayes had a pair of treys and eight points and Alyssa Morrison added six points.
Churchville-Chili seniors Brooke Ennis and Jessica Hyde were honored prior to their final regular season home game.

What is it that makes a buyer choose one home over an-other similarly priced property? Often the buyer will say that one home just "felt better". How can you, as a seller, achieve an advantage over other homes on the market?
One secret is to create a positive emotional impact by appealing to the senses. Before your home is shown to a pro-spective buyer, turn on all the lights and open the curtains.
Next, be aware of the sense of smell. Natural fragrances such as citrus are always appealing. Toss orange of lemon rind into the disposal before showing and consider a natural room spray.
Finally, turn off every noise-making device in your home with the exception of your music system. Soft instrumental music should be the only sound. If you have an answering machine, make sure it's mute. Nothing breaks the spell like a personal message blaring over the speaker, while buyers are trying to envision themselves living in your home.
