Program Description

The ‘Success in School and Life with Christ’ program will develop life and leadership skills in Catholic Eighth Grade students, and help them to develop and use their Catholic faith as their primary belief system and inspiration to define and accomplish meaningful school and life goals.

The program is based on the ‘P3 - Lifetime of Leadership System’ that integrates best practices from leadership development, life coaching and performance improvement disciplines. Some examples of these practices are linking development to real-world goals and results, addressing the belief system and mindset of the individual, and addressing the support and processes that either enable or hinder performance. This 9 step system is organized by 3 progressive phases:

A. Define your Goals and Forge your PATH

Step 1 - Identity Step 2 - Goals Step 3 - Path

B. Get Support and Drive your PROGRESS

Step 4 - Support Step 5 - Progress Step 6 - Habits

C. Understand Yourself and Ignite your PASSION

Step 7 - Values Step 8 - Talents Step 9 - Purpose

Multiple pedagogical strategies are used to drive student development and results, including:

• Structured learning • Self-assessments • Group discussions • Practical and guided experiential application • Parental involvement • Group coaching

Students develop school and life skills primarily through guided and practical application of the P3 system. Each step of the system is introduced with to the point, Christian inspired learning content that is based on sharing Christian beliefs and scripture, real-life examples relatable to teenagers, and simple ‘how-to’ guides for applying the key points in each of the 9 steps. A secure online program site provides completion guidance and tracking, multimedia learning content delivery, assignment downloads and submission, and optional virtual group coaching - all from the convenience of a personal mobile device. Parents can be involved through an online companion program, and using bi-weekly parent tip emails and check-in discussion guides to support their teenager. Virtual group coaching can also be used by students as an additional feature of the program for increased support, feedback and accountability to define and accomplish their goals.

The Christian faith will inspire and guide student strategies and actions throughout the program by connecting the Christian faith to the focus and meaning of each step of program framework. This approach is supported by the psychological concept that:

• Beliefs influence thoughts and meaning • Thoughts and meaning influence feelings • Feelings influence actions

Christian teachings and scripture will be shared and used to intentionally shape the program’s life and leadership skills to have a Catholic inspired meaning, which should inspire student’s to have spiritually aligned motives, actions and results. Other strategies to further inspire and develop the student’s Catholic faith will be the use of prayer throughout the program, the development of a personal prayer and prayer practice, and defining and working toward a faith-based goal.

The program is most impactful when delivered as an extended experience that takes place throughout the school year to allow time for learning, application, problem solving and realizing results. The program can be incorporated into a school’s curriculum using facilitator guides for staff (or student) led workshops during the school year, or offered as independent study for students to complete on their own. Schools can also choose to customize the name and branding of materials, including a customized online program site and sub-domain name. A pre and post program student assessment, and student evaluations for each step, are used to gather and share feedback on the experience and impact of the program.

Upon completion of the program, students receive a 'Lifetime of Leadership’ certificate and a transcript of the skills they demonstrated through completion of the program. Students also retain access to the online content for a full year from the start of the program, and can download the various types of learning content and application templates for their own personal ongoing use.

Program Delivery Below are two recommended delivery options using structured approaches by a school. Recommended start of the program is at the beginning of the school year, and closing the program before the Easter season, Spring Break, and other end of year activities.

Option 1: Deliver each of the 9 Steps individually every other week

Option 2: Deliver the 9 Steps in a full day session with class check-ins every 6 weeks

Instruction and Support

The Emerging Leader Academy provides program instruction and support through the online program site, including:

• Access to multimedia learning for each program step • Access to read and download assignments and supporting materials • Emails for program next steps and reminders • Tracking and follow-up for assignment submission • Technical support for students, parents and school staff

Schools need to provide the following to support program implementation and delivery:

• Creating and deploying a program plan for the school year

• Communicating the program to parents and other stakeholders • Providing contact information for students and their parents

• Administrative support to schedule rooms, and print materials (minimal) as needed

• Administer and cover any costs related to basic supplies for the in-person sessions

Schools can opt to use facilitator guides to deliver in-person sessions that support student progress throughout the program, and to allow for group interaction, school selected speakers, and school customized content if desired.

The Emerging Leader Academy can provide support for program planning, implementation and delivery.

Parent Involvement and Communication

Parents are an important part of the development process throughout the program. Parents can be involved by:

Participation

Schools determine the number of students to participate in the program, as well as how to determine which students will participate. The program can accommodate any 8th through 12th grade student if desired by the school. Students do not need prior knowledge or accomplishments to be successful in the program, but a desire to participate and engage fully in the experience is important for the student’s success and the experience of other students. A way to opt-out of the program is recommended to ensure that a student/parent that does not want to be in the program is not forced to do so.

Student participation and conduct needs to be consistent with the school’s expectations and policy. This program requires maturity from its students to be successful. Students need to treat each other with respect, take responsibility for managing their attention and progress, and feel empowered to ask for help and to help others if needed. Students that create a negative experience for other students, or that are not engaging in the program after assistance is offered, will need to make immediate positive changes to be able to remain in the program.

Assignments

Assignments are a key part of each program step to drive action and results throughout the program, and to be able to provide feedback and encouragement to students. Each assignment provides value to the participant, helps them to see an increase in their capability and achieve a personally valuable outcome. Assignments in each step require a good amount of thought and require a minimum of two weeks of time to complete for the greatest impact. Assignments are in a downloadable PDF format, and get submitted via questionnaires in the online program portal.

The assignments for each program step are:

• Step 1: Life Focus Area Matrix, Personal Affirmation Statements, Personal Prayer

• Step 2: BIG Goals, Success Story

• Step 3: Learning Plan, Goal Milestones, Action Plan

• Step 4: Support System Analysis, Mentor or Coach Engagement Plan • Step 5: Goal Progress Measures, Goal Tracking System Implementation

• Step 6: Time Journal, Habit Analysis

• Step 7: Role Model Interview, Values Sort Exercise

• Step 8: Talent Inventory Assessment, Interest Inventory Assessment

• Step 9: Purpose Statement Builder, Program Assessment

Program Completion

Upon completion of the program, students receive a 'Lifetime of Leadership with Christ’ certificate and a transcript of the skills they demonstrated through completion of the program. Students have a full year to complete their assignments to receive their certificate. Students do not receive a grade for completing the program. Students also only receive a completion notification, and feedback if necessary, for each assignment submitted. Students receive notifications when assignments are due, but will not be penalized for turning assignments in late.
