kept walking until I got tothe next crossroad (56)
where I met a man whotold me about the Daven-port Inn. He said the inn
was in LeClair and thatthe innkeeper knew wherethe old wizard lived. Theman was far too helpful, though, and I suspect hewas more interested in thecoin I offered than in help-
ing a fellow traveller. Weparted company and Iwalked on while he took theroad to Mumsford.
It was after marker 58 thatI found the dead cow in theroad, placed in a way thatmight dissuade travelers fromtaking the road to LeClairand to take the road toBruemet instead. I was con-cerned that it was a warningof disease ahead, but I hadto find the old wizard and theDavenport Inn was my onlyclue. bandit and briefly arrestedby the sentries at the districtline. When I explainedwhy I wore the handker-chief on my face, they toldme there was no disease andthat I should stop scaring the
regular folk upon the road.I promised to heed theiradvice and they released me.
After marker 62, I cameinto LeClair and a busier
place I never saw. My2nd inquiry was fruitful
and I found the DavenportInn. It was something ofa run down place and Iwas loathe to enter but
I doubted I'd getinformation if I
