WELCOME TO NEW PARENTS FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Dear Parents and carers,

It is with great pleasure that I offer you and your child a warm and friendly welcome to Sudley Infant School and look forward to meeting you. Both my children have passed through Sudley Infants and they have enjoyed the “Sudley experience” and have been VERY happy and so it is not just my own, but also their recommendation that I pass on to you as a new entrant to our school. This recommendation is based, not only on the outstanding standard of teaching that each child receives at Sudley Infants, but also on the whole educational environment at the school. Our school prides itself on not just being about the “three R’s” but also on providing our children with an environment where they are happy and will grow and learn, and so building a solid foundation for their future education. All our parents are encouraged to be a part of Sudley Infants, by helping out in school, taking an active part in our Parents and Friends’ Association (SIPFA) or as a parent governor when vacancies arise. We are very proud of being one of very few schools which operate an open door policy which means that you can see your child into the classroom each day and gives you the chance to have contact with your classteacher should you have any worries or concerns. This not only means that you can ensure that your child is settled before you leave them but gives you the opportunity to see them in their school setting and to be involved in that - they are usually very proud to take you into their world … and are very quick to tell you if you do something you should not! The Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the policies and general interests of the school and to ensure that the school is run for the benefit of all. We work in close partnership with the Headteacher who has responsibility for the day-to-day management of the school. If the need arises, both the parent Governors and myself can be contacted through the school. If you should have any queries then your first point of contact should be your classteacher. Over the last few years we have seen some major work including a new teaching block providing a new classroom and a kitchen area where the children have experimented with various cooking projects! We are also very proud of our stunning playground. Our latest Ofsted (November 2013) gave us overall ‘outstanding’ in all areas - terrific! I know as a parent that your child’s first few years are vitally important (and will pass by all too quickly) but I hope that we can work together to make these first years a positive and HAPPY learning experience for you all. Sue Milan Chair of Board of Governors The school Board of Governors consists of parent Governors, staff Governors, co-opted members and Local Authority Governors, associates and Headteacher Parent Governors Mr S Hodson, Ms A Morgan Ms M Young, Mr I Atkinson, Dr Shereen Shaw Teaching Staff Mrs J Morris, Community Governors Mr S Kearney (Vice-Chair) Mr D Bradshaw, Mrs J De Maestri, Mr R Kalirai, Miss S Milan (Chair) Mr Mike Evans LA Governors Mr C Barton, Mrs S Scoullar Associate Governors Mr S Czanner, Cllr Patrick Hurley, Mrs L Wall Headteacher Ms R Thomas Clerk to the Board of Governors Mrs C Hodson

SUDLEY INFANTS PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

SIPFA is a parents and friends association which plays a vital part in the school community. The committee has worked closely with the school over many years, contributing to the already friendly community feel on many great events! Annual Events that are held by SIPFA: Reception Disco, Themed Cake Sale, Christmas Fair, Themed School Disco, May Fair, Party in the Playground All events are very popular with both children and parents of the school! SIPFA also organise events during school time such as Easter Egg Hunts, Santa Claus’ Grotto and Reindeer visits which help to enhance the children’s experience at Sudley Infant School. As a parent’s association, our aim is to raise money during these events to help provide the school with additional new equipment. Money raised helps to subsidise the Year 2 swimming lessons; has provided the school with iPads, library books / DVDs, and a camera; as well as providing gifts for the children when they attend school trips. In order for SIPFA events to go ahead and money to be raised for the school, it is imperative that new parents join our committee to help in any way they can. We are always open to new ideas and suggestions so please feel free to come along to our annual general meeting (AGM) on the 21st September 2017 to see how you can get involved. We look forward to meeting all the new Reception parents! Dates for your calendar: Next Meeting: AGM - 21st September 2017 Next Event: Reception Disco – 29th September 2017 Chair: Mark Rossiter Vice Chair: Sarah Rylands Secretary: Erica Yates

ACCESSIBILITY OF PARENTS Parents and carers must remember that the school is not a public place and they enter with the permission of the Headteacher. This permission can be withdrawn at the discretion of the Headteacher.

I need to make it clear to all that I will not tolerate inappropriate behaviour/language,shouting, physical or verbal abuse in front of myself, staff or the children in my daily care – this applies to face to face contact and telephone

conversations. The Board of Governors has a zero tolerance policy

Violent, threatening behaviour and abuse against school staff or other members of the community will not be tolerated. Parents and carers must not approach other parents and carers if there is a query about another child.

GENERAL SAFETY I would be grateful if all parents would note the following points:-

- Please take care with scooters/bikes when walking with them across the playground to the scooter store/bike rack - Please do not push the metal gate at the main entrance. - This is a no smoking site, including the use of electronic cigarettes. - Dogs are not allowed on the premises walking or being carried. - It is an offence to stop on the zig-zag lines on the road outside the school for any reason. It may also be an offence in law to park opposite zig-zag lines painted on a road. This space must be left clear. It is important that you park elsewhere to drop and collect your child/children. - Children should enter and leave the school grounds by the path and appropriate gate. - The school and residents operate a voluntary one-way system on Lugard Road on school days 8.15-9.15am and 2.30-3.30pm - Parents and children should not enter the school grounds via the large gate on Lugard Road – this is a vehicle entrance. This gate will be shut and should remain shut at all times - if you see it open please close it. - Please make sure your child does not walk/jump on our flower beds or drop litter. - All visitors have to register and wear a visitor pass. - There are nine supervisory assistants employed at the school to ensure children's safety at lunchtime. - An adult is always on duty during morning and afternoon play. All these issues are explained and discussed with the children regularly in class and in assemblies. I would appreciate your cooperation to create an orderly and safe environment

Attendance and punctuality Parents/carers of pupils of compulsory school age are under a legal duty to send their children to school. All absences must be reported to the school before 9.30am of the first day of absence and subsequently be explained by letter. The school will then determine whether the absence should be regarded as ‘authorised’ or ‘unauthorised’. Parents/carers must make every effort to take family holidays during the 13 weeks of school holiday time available. Registration commences at 8.55 am and much of the preparation of the day happens between 9 - 9.15 am. To be late, therefore, can cause a child to feel upset and insecure for the best part of the morning. So please try to ensure that your child/children are in the playground by 8.50 am, at the latest. The school bell is rung at this time. When children are absent from school we require a phone call to our parent line (728 9639) and, when the child returns to school, a letter explaining the absence. It is essential that parents send a note in to the classteacher on their child's return. Without this your child will be marked with an unauthorised absence which is passed to the Local Education Authority. Mrs J Williams is our attendance officer. We have systems in place to monitor lateness and absence. If your child will be arriving late because of a medical appointment, for instance, we need to know in advance for registration and school meal purposes. If you arrive at school late and find the doors in your usual entrance/exit area closed - you should use the reception entrance on Lugard Road, with the intercom system. Please do not knock on doors or classroom windows to ask for doors to be opened. Also, when leaving the building at any time of the day, please exit through the reception (Year 2 area) if the doors in Foundation Stage and Year 1 have already been closed. Children who are absent from school for long periods of time will inevitably miss many important parts of the National Curriculum and your child's progress will be affected. Attendance rates for the school are 96.6%. Authorised absence rates are 2.4%. Unauthorised 0.4% Absence figures are produced regardless of reason for absence.for the Department for education All figures are based on an academic year ending on 31 May. The Educational Welfare Officer, Emma Crellin calls regularly to the school and is able to monitor children we are concerned about. The Education Welfare Officer's work is at all times confidential and of an unbiased nature. In the case of long periods of absence the Education Welfare Officer will make direct contact with the parents. Holidays in term time – days away from school will only be authorized in exceptional circumstances HEALTH & SAFETY Medicines NON PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION CANNOT BE ADMINISTERED AT SCHOOL - special arrangements will be made for children with specific conditions. No tablets, medicines, throat lozenges, antibiotics, Calpol etc are given by the school. Children who have specific medical conditions need to inform us on the admission form. The administration staff then notify the teachers. Children, who have been trained by doctors or nurse specialists, administer their own medication. If your child is unable to do this please seek medical guidance. Please do not put antibiotics in your child’s lunch box or lunchtime drink or supply them with throat lozenges. Children on school trips can be given travel sickness tablets before the journey. Any queries regarding medicines should be discussed with staff who can be contacted on our Parent line – 728 9639

Accidents and First Aid For minor injuries, head bumps and more serious injuries your child will receive an accident slip indicating the nature of their injury. In cases where we feel that parents should be informed, we do our utmost to contact parents/guardians/other contacts re the injury. It is important that all numbers, especially mobile numbers are given to the office. The Authority's recommended procedure for first aid is to simply wash and, if necessary, cover cuts and grazes. We ask parents to check dressings and inspect even minor injuries at home. From time to time, spitting or biting occurs - if this happens to your child you will be informed. We do not telephone parents/guardians unless we feel it is necessary - when we do, it is up to parents to decide whether they come and inspect the injury or wait until the child gets home. School staff cannot advise parents or give their opinion as to the best action.

Most days we have children that are physically sick or have toilet accidents. Support staff always do their best to sort these things out. On occasions however, children have to wait a while before parents can come to collect them. With this in mind we have had a shower installed in school. The children will therefore, if they wish or when we feel it is necessary, be able to have a shower. Staff will be there to supervise as usual. We will send any soiled clothes and a towel home with your child and you can return the towel and the change of clothes to school. Children learn to become independent quickly and we have a special system whereby each child can go to the toilet without having to ask an adult. This card system is deployed by all classes. Illness A letter is required if children miss school due to illness. We prefer children not to attend school if they are unwell during the night or first thing in the morning. We should be notified immediately, on the parent line 728 9639, of contagious diseases eg German Measles. We should also be notified if your child’s absence is likely to last more than 3 days.

We are always grateful if parents notify us of a case of head lice. We are then able to inform the rest of the class that a case has been identified and remind parents to check. Special combs are available from the school office - price 50p.

Suncream We ask parents to put on suncream in the morning, before school, so the children are protected for the day. We ask this so that - * Children will not have tubes/containers out in the playground - a number of our children have allergies against certain creams and lotions. * Application is done by you - you know your child best in these matters eg where you put it, how much is needed. * There is no risk that children will put it on other children. * You won’t forget as you only have 1 or 2 children to deal with. If your child has special medical needs in regard to suncream, please let Mrs Williams or Mrs Bain know.

Healthy Eating Our school participates in the National School Fruit Scheme for infant classes which was introduced by the Government. Under the Scheme, each child is entitled to receive a free piece of fruit each school day. Sweets are not used as rewards in school and therefore we would appreciate parents not sending sweets or chocolates for the whole class to celebrate birthdays etc. We would ask parents preparing packed lunches not to include sweets or nuts. Recent surveys have shown that it is possible to reduce

headaches and increase concentration and mental performance by drinking more water. Children are able to bring in their own bottled water which must be in a small, sports bottle with a fixed cap (no screw-off caps) and the bottle must be clear plastic. The bottle must be clearly marked with your child’s name and must contain plain water - no fizzy drinks or squash etc. Bottles are available to purchase from the school office. When the bottle is empty it can be refilled, at home, by the parents. General Safety Children are NOT allowed to wear/bring jewellery or watches to school. Jewellery can be dangerous to not only the owner but also to other pupils during many school activities and looking for mislaid items can cause considerable loss of teachers' time. If a child has pierced ears this should ideally be completed over the summer holidays in order for the healing period to be over before returning to school and the earrings removed for the time the child is in school. Children are also not allowed to wear make-up or nail varnish at school.

We talk regularly to the children about general issues such as road safety and not going with other people. Also, questions that might arise from national news are answered sensitively by staff during assemblies and classtime.

Safeguarding Because of day-to-day contact with children, schools are particularly well placed to observe outward signs of abuse, changes in behaviour or failure to develop. Parents should be aware, therefore, that where it appears to a member of the school staff that a child may have been abused, the school is required, as part of the local Child Protection Procedures, to report their concern to the Social Services Department immediately. The safety of our pupils is very important to us. We have a Positive Handling Policy and a detailed Safeguarding Policy which includes issues such as Child Protection, staff selection and vetting of volunteers. These policies are available on request from school. Our Child Protection Officer is Assistant Headteacher - Mrs J Leonard.

STAFFING - GENERAL

From time to time we have students from universities and other institutions, who will take a class. All students are closely supervised by the classteacher and a teacher manager - Miss L Muchmore. We also welcome work experience students. You may notice different teachers in your child’s class; this could be due to our team teaching situation or a supply teacher who is covering the class for illness or a course. Teachers attend relevant courses as part of their professional development - and this in turn improves standards and quality of teaching and pupils’ learning. Classroom assistants work on their own in class as well as in a class team situation.

School Council Involvement The School Council are involved in making decisions about behaviour policies and often lead good behaviour initiatives around school. Discipline is a frequent item on the agenda in meetings. School Council members act as corridor monitors and report to teachers about behaviour. Year 2 School Council assist at lunchtime by supervising younger children on their way to the hall and rewarding positive behaviour.

Charging In line with the Education Act 1989, it is the Governors’ policy to ask all parents for a voluntary contribution towards the cost of any educational visit. If not enough contributions are received, then a visit may have to be cancelled. A copy of the school Charging policy can be found on the school website. Behaviour and Relationships From the beginning our school aims to foster within our children an attitude of self-discipline and our children are encouraged to think of others, to be courteous, to take pride in their appearance, to apply themselves diligently, and to produce good standards of work. Copies of our Behaviour and Discipline Policy are published on our website. Should problems of behaviour arise, the school works to resolve these through discussion and partnership with parents. In the event of a serious act of misconduct, the Headteacher has the authority to suspend the pupil for a short period, the duration of the suspension being made clear to the parents at the time. In the event of this course of action being ineffective, the Governors are empowered to permanently exclude the child from the school. Rewarding positive behaviour

Dealing with inappropriate behaviour When children misbehave we aim to use sanctions in a fair and consistent way. We hope most behaviour will be dealt with within the class. Children use the class Behaviour Book system. Following a warning a child will get a tick in the book if their behaviour has continued to be unacceptable. 3 ticks results in the loss of a privilege within the classroom eg sitting alone, missing a particular activity, being unable to do a class ‘job’ 6 ticks results in the loss of a privilege and being spoken to by an Assistant Head 9 ticks results in the loss of a privilege and being spoken to by the Headteacher Children in Reception will begin to use the Behaviour Book system during the summer term as part of the transition to Key Stage 1. Until this point, teachers will use their professional judgement as to which sanctions should be used and when. This is to allow the children to settle into school life and understand the rules and expectations. In addition to the Behaviour Book it may be necessary for further action:

Individual behaviour record. This may take the form of a sticker chart or written record of positive and negative behaviour displayed. The child will be aware of contents by being present when comments are written or having comments read back to them

Individual behaviour targets. This will be very specific and detail the elements of behaviour that need to improve as well as how the child will be supported to achieve the targets

Some children may require the specialist support of staff from outside agencies to learn to manage their behaviour

Some children may require additional support at the end of Year 2 to assist them with the transition to their next school. The SENCo will liaise with your child’s next school SENCo for this

These strategies will be discussed with parents and be under constant review. They will end when behaviour shows a sustained improvement. In the event that a child damages property belonging to someone else we ask parents to ensure that the item is replaced or the appropriate money is sent in.

Admissions

As we are a Local Authority Community School, Liverpool Local Authority sets our admissions criteria. Children are admitted to school each September of the school year in which they will be five. The school’s standard admission number is 120. Should there be more applications for places than the school has available the School Admissions Team will allocate them in accordance with the current criteria, which can be viewed at www.liverpool.gov.uk/admissions

You will be invited to an induction afternoon for parents of new starters, where you will be able to meet the Class Teachers, Support team, governors, kitchen team and myself. At this meeting we will give you information that you will need when your child starts school. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. During this visit your child will be invited to spend time with the Reception Class Teachers in their classrooms.

Appointments are organised for the Autumn term before your child starts school. The purpose of these visits is to meet you and to talk with you about anything relating to your child starting school, we ask that you fill in information forms and bring them to discuss at this meeting.

In September your child will start school full time on a Friday 8 September. We have found that it is better to settle the children into school in this way. For those of you with twins they will be placed in separate classes. This allows them to feel more secure and become familiar with routines as an individual. Some children may need a longer transition into school and this may be arranged with your classteacher/s. Length of Stay in the Infant School All children attend this school for three full years.

Transfer to a Junior School All children who have their seventh birthday on or before the 31st August transfer to a Junior School in the September following.

Organisation

Sudley Infant School is a Community Infant School for children between 4 and 7 years of age. We are a

four form entry, admitting up to 120 children each year. We are very proud of our school environment both inside and outside.

We have extensive grounds including a large playground, an enormous EYFS outdoor learning area, wildlife garden, playground curriculum trails and much more. All of these facilities are used to support learning across the curriculum through play and cross curricular work. Our school has bright, spacious classrooms. We have a large hall which is used for a variety of activities.

Entrances and exits have wheelchair access.

The school has three year groups:

Reception 4-5 years Year 1 5-6 years Year 2 6-7 years

Reception and Year 1 children transfer to the next class in September of each year and Year 2 children move to the junior phase. Infant classes cannot have more than 30 children unless there are exceptional circumstances. All of our classes have a Teacher and Teaching Assistant support.

Children are grouped together in classes of mixed gender and age. the range of confidence, ability and interest and maturity is very wide. The staff are very aware of this and structure their work accordingly. Much of the work is, therefore, done individually or in small groups. The Class Teacher/s is/are responsible for the majority of the teaching for his/ her class and for the general well being of each child.

We work closely as a team and all the teachers share planning, ideas and expertise so that we can ensure continuity and progression in all areas of the curriculum. We ensure that children have the opportunity for similar experiences in the programmes of study that are planned for them.

Children with Special Needs - SEND

Every child is special in some way and it is by living and working alongside eachother that we learn to

accept our similarities and differences. Sudley Infant School is recognised as a fully Inclusive school. We welcome all children as part of our school and have several children with a wide variety of differing Special Needs. Our staff have a deep commitment and a wide range of expertise to support the children and we endeavour to meet the needs of every child in our care.

The needs of all children are identified in several ways and any child with identified needs will be given extra support in order to achieve success. Individual Education plans may be written and support will be given in a variety of ways in small groups and individually. We may also seek advice from outside agencies. Should you have any concerns about your child please come and talk to us. The full S.E.N. policy/local offer and report is available on our website with paper copies available from school.

Medical Needs Some medical conditions can affect a child in school. It would be helpful if you could let us have any relevant information when child starts school. All information is confidential to the staff who are working with your child.

We do ask that children who need medication are given this medication by you (or someone you nominate) as we are unable accept this responsibility. Most children needing medicine will need to be at home. Special arrangements are made for asthmatic children or children on long term medication. Please see Mrs Williams in the school office or Mrs Mylett/Mrs O’Rourke SENDCos.

School Times School starts at 8.50 am. School finishes each day at 3.15 pm.

Children are not allowed to go home alone. We ask that if you or a designated person with password are not able to collect your child that you contact the school office.

Lunch is at 11.50am to 1.05 pm.

Afternoon school starts at 1.05 pm children will have 15-20 minutes after they have eaten their meal

in which to play. Children with packed lunches have 15-20 minutes before their meal in which to play. During this time they will be supervised by the midday supervisors. When it is fine the children play outside and on the days when it is too cold or it is wet they will be supervised in the classrooms, each class has its own midday supervisor. Please make sure your child is suitably dressed for differing weather as it can be cold and windy on the playground.

After School provision Most of our children are cared for by family and friends. A number of children have child minders (contact numbers available from the school office) and use Cressington Manor and Kelton. Both Cressington and Kelton run a pick up service from school every day.

Developing a Love of Learning at Sudley Infants

As a truly inclusive school everyone in school works together to ensure that every child is recognised and treated as an individual. We want to foster a love of learning that the children will take with them as they go through life.

We all learn by experience and have different learning styles. Our teachers know this and provide a wealth of learning activities and teaching strategies to accommodate these. Learning takes place both inside and outside. Our classrooms are bright stimulating and resourced to the highest standard and our grounds are a wonderful place in which to experience the joy of learning.

We all believe that children learn best by doing things they really enjoy and we make learning firsthand, practical, exciting and fun. Our children are taught through a programme of structured teacher taught and independent activities. These activities take account of all children’s needs and allow children to learn at their own pace ensuring every child is treated as an individual. All children are encouraged to be independent and take responsibility for their learning from the beginning of their education at our school.

Our classrooms are organised into areas which take this into account and it is important that the children have the opportunity to work, play and explore these areas and cooperate with others in the activities offered.

All classes are of mixed ability but children may be taught in groups and/ or individually and are supported by qualified, skilled teaching assistants.

Buddies

All new reception children will have a buddy who will meet them in September and make sure they have friends on the playground

Early Years Foundation Stage There are seven areas of learning and development that must shape educational programmes in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive. These three areas, the prime areas, are:

Communication and Language Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations.

Physical Development Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

15

Page 17: Sudley Infant School · 2018. 6. 28. · Welcome from Ms Thomas, our Headteacher Dear parents and carers, I would like to start by welcoming you to Sudley Infant School. I hope your

Personal, Social and Emotional Development Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities. There are four specific areas, through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied. The specific areas are:

Literacy Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

Mathematics Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.

Understanding the World Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Expressive Arts and Design Expressive arts and design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and

materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings

through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology

Fun Whilst not a curriculum subject, fun is definitely in our curriculum and school Key Stage 1 Key Stage 1 – Years 1 and 2 we follow the National Curriculum (which currently under review). We teach a creative, skills based curriculum encompassing the National Curriculum. This is based on firsthand, practical, exciting and fun activities. We have topics which are taught in a cross curricular way encompassing most subjects. They are designed to keep the children engaged and interested in learning. Some subjects may be taught discretely throughout the year. If you wish to see any of the school policy or curriculum planning documents, each Class Teacher has a copy of the curriculum planning for their class. Please do not hesitate to ask to see them. Topic webs are sent home so parents can talk with their children about what they are learning.

Curriculum

Literacy Literacy is based on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children begin adding flicks and joining writing as soon as they are ready.

Listening Children need to listen with concentration and understanding. We endeavor to teach the children to listen to each other as well as to adults. In school we provide man opportunities to develop this skill.

You can help to develop your child’s listening ability by listening to them and setting an example, reading and telling stories, rhymes and poems, watching suitable television programmes and having follow-up discussions.

16

Page 18: Sudley Infant School · 2018. 6. 28. · Welcome from Ms Thomas, our Headteacher Dear parents and carers, I would like to start by welcoming you to Sudley Infant School. I hope your

Speaking We encourage children to talk for a variety of reasons and to a variety of audiences with a variety of techniques and we provide an abundance of stimulating situations in order to develop and extend this skill. You can help your child by talking with him/her about simple tasks, visits, television, toys etc. and by encouraging your child to question and explain things.

Reading Children learn to read by reading and at Sudley Infant School we actively encourage reading for pleasure. Your child will be taught to read using a range of strategies, taught at the appropriate time. We have a wide variety of reading material suitable for each child and children are give choices. This may be a free or guided choice. You can support your child in reading by reading suitable books to him/her, encouraging your child to bring his/her books home, listening to and reading with your child a helping him/her to choose other suitable books.

Writing We want to develop children as confident, competent writers. When learning to write the children pass through a series of developmental stages

At each stage your child will be stimulated, encouraged, supported and given time and practice to allow him/her to continue on to the next stage of development. Children will be encouraged to draft and edit their own work and to value and appreciate each others contributions.

Children are given a variety of experiences to develop the manipulative skills which later lead to handwriting. The children are then taught the correct method of letter formation and are given time and opportunity to reinforce those skills. They are observed whilst doing this as bad habits are hard to eradicate. Children will be introduced to joined up writing when appropriate but always by Year 2.

Mathematics Our Mathematics work is based on practical, firsthand, real life activities relevant to the children’s experiences, work is recorded when and where it is appropriate The work is differentiated to cater for the differing needs of our children, thus enabling each child to work to the best of his/her ability and to achieve their full potential.

Science

Science is everywhere in our school and some of our topics are science based. Children develop their skills and understanding of the world in which we live through practical investigation and firsthand experience and exploration. They will be given the opportunity to make observations, ask questions and draw conclusions. They will record their work in a variety of ways.

Computing Children love computers and use Information Communication Technology as a tool in the classroom. Every class has several computers including access to the internet, and many other hardware and software items. ICT is an important and integral part of the curriculum.

Page 19: Sudley Infant School · 2018. 6. 28. · Welcome from Ms Thomas, our Headteacher Dear parents and carers, I would like to start by welcoming you to Sudley Infant School. I hope your

17 Design and Technology Doing is what children do best. At our school they do lots of designing and making activities. The children work with a wide range of materials including sheet materials, textiles, wood, construction kits and food, they are asked to think of ideas, design, make and evaluate their finished products.

Geography

Geography is linked to pupils’own experiences. They gain knowledge and understanding about their local area and then of places further afield. They are encouraged to keep records, recognise landscape features, understand the different uses of buildings and understand the value of their environment.

History Children develop an awareness of the past by listening to well known myths and legends, stories and eye witness accounts of historical events, the lives of famous people and fictional stories set in the past. They sequence events and objects in order to develop a sense of chronology. We use artefacts, music, photographs and pictures, visit buildings and sites, museums such as the Liverpool World Museum. We also have lots of visitors in school who bring meaningful and realistic insight to children’s experience.

Creativity and the Arts Art – what is better than being creative! We have many opportunities for experiencing and experimenting Art. It isn’t just paint. The children use a variety of paints, clay, modelling material, crayons, coloured pencils, pens, sewing materials and collage materials - the list is endless. Children work individually or in groups, expressing their own ideas for their own pleasure in independent work or through a teacher directed activity.

Music Our music curriculum is based on pleasure and the development of the appropriate concepts and skills - making sounds while having fun! We have a central resource area with a wide variety of musical instruments. Children are encouraged to listen, discover, recognise, discriminate, imitate, experiment, compose and appraise. We also have a whole school singing session where the children learn favourite songs.

LANGUAGES We believe that contact with any language in addition to English is important and to that end all children have a French session with our French assistant Madame Sylvie Kolvik who joins with your child’s class teacher to provide great language learning sessions. There is a great emphasis on activities and songs and it is amazing to see how confident all the children are. Some have been known to do all the ordering in restaurants in France when on holiday! Year 1 & 2 children also have Chinese language & culture sessions, getting familiar with Mandarin sounds and visuals during the year with the Confucious Institute based in Liverpool University. Reception children also have Spanish sessions with Mrs Stewart.

Drama As well as taught drama lessons we have a role play area in every class where the children act out various scenarios.

Physical Education Physical Education, including Dance is an integral part of the school curriculum. Children derive a great deal of pleasure from movement. They are given the opportunity to respond to simple movement tasks to a variety of stimuli. They have the chance to explore large and small apparatus and are allowed to gain confidence whilst being taught appropriate skills.

The children are taught simple competitive games and learn the value of exercise as a medium for a healthy life style. We also have access to hard and grassed areas which may be used for all physical and sporting activities when appropriate.

All our teaching staff are qualified to teach P.E. as part of their qualified teacher status.

We are a Healthy School and our award is displayed in the school foyer.

RE We want our children to have a caring, sharing, moral approach towards each other as individuals, both in the school community and in the world outside.

We teach our children ways in which we work together for the benefit of all.

The children are introduced to the Bible stories from the Old and New Testament. We celebrate special events in the Christian year as a school. We make the children aware of some of the cultures around us - we live in a country where there are many different cultures and it is through understanding that we become more tolerant of others.

Personal and Social We encourage all children to develop in their personal and social relationships and try to develop self esteem, confidence and self discipline.

Collective Worship We hold an act of Collective Worship each day. It is a very simple act of collective worship and is non-denominational. It is a broadly Christian act of Collective Worship. If you wish your child to be excluded from these activities on religious grounds please let us know when your child first starts school. We will then be able to make suitable arrangements to ensure safe supervision during Collective Worship time. Dropping children off and picking them up In the interests of safety, parents who bring their children to school by car are requested to park away from school, safely and sensibly. Please avoid parking in front of local residents’ driveways, disabled bays etc Please use the one-way system

19 Communication between school and home

• Newsletters • School website • Texts • Parent line • Talk to staff • By letter/post-it • Staff on the door am and pm

If your child lives between parents or splits their time in different homes over the week we rely on parents to share all information. On occasions this may prove difficult and to avoid communication issues, please contact the school office so we can keep you up to date with information.

Sex Education There is no formal sex education programme but all children will learn about themselves in their work in school and as questions about sex education arise we will deal with these in a natural, sensitive way that is appropriate for each individual child. Our policy is available on the school website Equality It is the policy of the school to treat all pupils, and the whole school community with the same respect. Children are all presented with the same opportunities for learning. Race, gender, religion or ability are not considered to be a barrier at our school. Visits and Visitors We have a wide range of visitors and visits to and from school. These activities are a valuable part of the children’s education, helping to enrich and widen their experiences. We often need a helping hand on our school trips. You would be very welcome to join in.

Assessment Children’s progress is monitored throughout the school and teachers’ assessment of children’s work is based on a carefully structured record keeping system. Throughout the year there are opportunities for you to meet with the Class Teacher and discuss the development and progress of your child. A written report is sent to you at the end of each school year. Year 1 children undertake a phonics assessment set by the Government at the end of the school year. Standard Assessment Tasks (S.A.T.s) are administered at the end of Key stage 1 (aged 6 & 7) and compared with the teachers own assessments. Teacher assessments are reported to both the a LA and yourselves. Behaviour We expect high standards of behaviour at all times and encourage children to give of their best at all times, praising children and rewarding positive behaviour. Our behaviour policy is available should you wish to see it on the school website Our school meal provider is Absolutely Catering – menus are available on the school website and also sent home regularly

We link with many schools, LJMU, local allotments and have a yearly sports’ competition with a local Infant school. Children are encouraged to litter pick in groups with the LA and we have many links through our parents and many more links throughout the school year. Child Protection and Safeguarding

Because of day to day contact with children, Schools are particularly well placed to observe outward signs of

abuse, neglect, changes in behaviour or failure to develop in children. All staff have been trained in

Safeguarding.

Parents should be aware that where it appears that a child may have been abused or neglected

the school is required, as part of Liverpool Safeguarding Procedures to report their concern to the appropriate

department in Children’s Services immediately.

The Designated Teachers for Child Protection are: Mrs Janet Leonard and Deputy, Mrs O’Rourke We will issue a Safeguarding leaflet to all parents.

At Sudley Infant School we abide by Liverpool Safeguarding Procedures.

Frequently asked questions Adults other than parents picking up children The school will only allow children to be picked up by adults other than their parents if we have a photograph or the password has been given. Parents should ring the Parentline, speak to a member of staff in the morning or provide written authorisation in advance. Children are not allowed to be picked up by young people under the age of fourteen. Should the school become aware that a child or children are leaving the school site unaccompanied, or with a young person under the age of fourteen, the school will contact parents and request written confirmation that parents accept full responsibility for their child leaving the school in these circumstances.

What happens when my child gets upset in the playground ?

Playtimes at Sudley Infant school are an enjoyable part of the day. Children are supervised by adults during all playtimes. We also have a team of ‘Play leaders’ who help at playtimes. These are Year 2 children who have trained to help younger children, encourage all children to join in activities and support their peers in resolving minor conflicts.

Children are encouraged to talk with an adult if they are upset at playtime and/or have a disagreement with another child. In such situations, each child’s concern is listened to by the member of staff on duty and followed up with the most appropriate action. This may be a verbal reprimand by the member of staff and apologies made by the children, where relevant. On certain occasions, the class teacher will be informed and action taken, as appropriate. This may take the form of missing a playtime to write a letter of apology.

If the incident is considered to be serious the children concerned are sent to an Assistant Headteacher who may involve the Headteacher. All staff listen to the children and will speak with them concerning the issue. It may then be considered appropriate to speak to the parents of both children.

We have policies for Behaviour and Anti Bullying, which are available to parents on our school website or on request.

What do I do if my child is sick? We have to keep detailed records of each individual child’s attendance and punctuality, which are monitored by the school and our Educational Welfare Officer who makes regular visits. If your child is unwell, please telephone the school office first thing in the morning on the day of your child’s absence informing us that they will not be at school and the expected date of return. A note explaining the absence should be sent to school on your child’s return. If your child has a medical appointment, please inform the office. In the case of tummy bugs, vomiting or other associated issues it is recommended that you do not return your child to school until your child has been free of the symptoms for 48 hours.

What happens if I am late collecting my child?

At the end of the day the children are dismissed by their class teacher and any children who have not been collected are taken to wait outside the school office. If we have been informed that a parent is slightly delayed then the child waits by the office until their parent arrives. If we have not been notified we start to contact the parents and named carers to find out what arrangements can be made. This is obviously time-consuming and it is appreciated if parents can notify us as early as possible of lateness for any particular reason. You will be required to sign the Late Pick Up Register.

What happens if my child needs to take medication at school?

• The only medicines we are allowed to administer during school time are those prescribed by your doctor. If the medication is prescribed three times daily the school will not administer the medication as it can be taken in the morning, after school and in the evening.

• We do not administer cough medicines, Calpol etc., which have been purchased ‘over the counter’.

• An ‘Administering Medication’ form, available from the school office, must be completed by parents requesting medicine be given to their children by school staff. Please see the Special needs coordinator Mrs Mylett for any other queries

• Medication must always be handed into and collected from the office by parents and not brought to the school by children.

They have all finished their infant journey independent, confident, happy and ready to begin the junior school. The teaching standards have exceeded our expectations and the school is run wonderfully with the greatest of standards. As parents we are so proud to say our children have attended Sud;ley infant school and are sad our time here has ended. We would highly recommend the school’
