Subject: English Language - Topic: Affixes Name: __________________ Month: September Class: (IX) Section: _______ Week (4) Prefix is an affix that is added in front of the word such as unfaithful. Suffix is an affix that is added at the end of the word such as unfaithful. Root or Stem is a form of the word to which affixes are attached such as unfaithful. Look at the Greek and Latin stems:

Mono One Miso Hatred of Bi Two Gamy Marriage Poly Many Theo God Anthropo Man Glotta Tongue Logy Knowledge Philo Love

Monogamy: having one wife or husband Bigamy: two marriages Polygamy: Several spouses to one person Misogamy: Hatred of marriage Monotheism: Believing in one God Polyglot: One who speaks many languages Misanthropy: Hatred of man/Mankind. Theology: the knowledge of God and religion Philanthropy: the love of mankind

1. Brainstorm and create six words using the above affixes:

_____________ _____________ _____________ _____________ _____________

Latin stems play an important role in learning vocabulary. Anima means life, breath, soul and spirit so the words which are made with Anima do carry any of the above meanings e.g. Animate: > Giving life, action or motion and Animosity: > vehement enmity. Unanimous carries the meaning of One and Anima of Mind so the word unanimous means One Mind. Other examples are: Bene >well, Magnus > large, big ,great, Unus > single, one, Fac > do or make, Volens > wishing and Dic > say or tell.

Benevolence: wishing others well Benefactor: one who wishes others well Benediction: blessing Magnum a large bottle Magnitude greatness Magnify To make large Magnate an important person

2. Write the meanings of the following words:

Beneficent________ Benign ________ Magnanimity_________ Magnitude_________ Greek stems are easily recognized. Greek “Monos” meaning One is Mono or Mon in English. Graph means “to write”. See:

Monk: inhabitant of a monastery Monologue: talking to one’s self aloud Monomania: mental illness (limited to one idea) Graphic: written, vivid Graphite: the black material in a lead pencil Telegraph : writing at a distance
