    SUFI SONGS.

Maye ni mein kinnu aakha, dard wichhoray da haal ni

Dukha di roti, soola da salan,

    Aahe da balan baal ni

Maye ni mein kinnu aakha, dard wichhoray da haal ni

    Jangal bele phira dhoondendi,

    Ajje na payo laal ni

Maye ni mein kinnu aakha, dard wichhoray da haal ni

    Dhuwa dukhe mere murshad wala,

    Jaa phola taa laal ni

Maye ni mein kinnu aakha, dard wichhoray da haal ni

    Kahe Hussain faqeer sayi da

Shoh mile taa thewa nihaal ni

Maye ni mein kinnu aakha, dard wichhoray da haal ni

O mother O mother, who do I tell, this pain of separation

Bread of sadness, sauce of spikes,

    Make a fire of laments

O mother O mother, who do I tell, this pain of separation

    Wandered jungles and deserts,

    But not found the ruby

O mother O mother, who do I tell, this pain of separation

    My Masters fire smolders,

If I poke, its red hot

O mother O mother, who do I tell, this pain of separation

    Says Hussain the poor faqeer,

    Meeting God would be ecstasy

    TRANSLATION

whether you know it or not

    come into my courtyard

    to you i am sacrificed

    come into my courtyard

other than you there is none for me

i have searched the jungles wilderness and deserts

i have searched the whole world

    come into my courtyard

    to you i am sacrificed

    come into my courtyard

people take ranjha to be a cattle-herder

    ranjha is actually amongst people

saying this is my belief and faith

    come into my courtyard

    to you i am sacrificed

    come into my courtyard

    shah inayat, my lord

    i gave up my ancestry

    and attached myself to you

    nurture such attachments

    come into my courtyard

whether you know it or not

    come into my courtyard

    to you i am sacrificed

    come into my courtyard

this is my belief and faith

    come into my courtyard

    TRANSLATION

    the soul is enthralled!

my friend, my beloved, turn thou thy reins

    and return home

the dunes of rohi are crimson dyed

    my earrings feel heavy

spending night upon longing night in sorrow

o why then have you made kech your abode!

    the soul is enthralled!

my friend, my beloved, turn thou thy reins

    and return home

    o the miracle of rohi!

    when the spring arrives

there dwells the friend of my poor self

there the lov ers thirst in thousands

but still wretched i remain homeless

    the soul is enthralled!

my friend, my beloved, turn thou thy reins

    and return home

one day, o farid! the friend will return

to inhabit the lap of my bereavement

he will embrace me in my mourning

o why then have you made kech your abode!

    TRANSLATION

going to mecca, your tale did not end

even after offering prayers a hundred-fold!

going to the ganges, your tale did not end

    even after ablutions a hundred-fold!

bulleh shah, your tale is fulfilled

when the i is abandoned from the self!

studying much, you became a scholar

    yet you never studied yourself!

    entered into temples and mosques,

    yet never entered into yourself!

bulleh shah, you grasp for the skies,

but grasp not what is within your own home!

your head bears a cap, but your intent is wrong

    what good then the cap

you went into retreat but did not find your lord

    what good then the retreat!

though the beads turned your heart does not

what good then the rosary in your hand!

bullah, without the yeast, milk does not curdle

    though it turn red boiling!
