Assignment 2

The chosen text is an adaptation of animal fable “The Greedy Crow”. This story is

appropriate for Standard 4 pupils as it has a plot and characters which would be

entertaining and engaging for pupils. It contains simple vocabulary and language

structures which enable pupils to comprehend easily. The story has plain concept which

pupils would be able to relate well to their background knowledge. It also assists in the

teaching of a few new words and grammatical structures to pupils. A range of

communicative tasks can be carried out using the short text.

“The Greedy Crow” is a story of a crow that is greedy. The crow has a piece of

meat but wants a dead rat as well. He drops the meat and flies after the rat. In the end,

he loses both the piece of meat and the rat.

This story would be engaging to pupils for numerous reasons. Firstly, the story

has domestic animal characters that the pupils will show interest to read about it as they

would be able to easily recognize them from their previous knowledge. Besides that, the

story has a plain clear storyline, which makes the pupil to understand the story easily.

It is obvious that pupils of this age are attracted by stories about animal characters.

Secondly, the story is suitable for pupils of this age as it is written in plain

language. The sentences are short and can be comprehend easily. Words such as

‘was’, ‘flew’, ‘saw’, ‘took’, ‘had’, ‘decided’, ‘wanted’, ‘did not’ are incorporated in this story

to make the students be familiar with the simple past tense. These words can also be

explained with the help of flashcards ending with ‘-d’ and ‘-ed’ to show past action.

Through learning past tense, pupils will know that they should use simple past tense to

show past action. Apart from that, the text includes captivating illustration and vibrant

colours which can grab pupil’s attention to read and enjoy the story.

Thirdly, the story also teaches not to be greedy. For example, in this story, the

crow initially has a piece of meat but it wants a dead rat as well. He drops the meat and

flies after the rat. In the end, he loses both the piece of meat and the dead rat. This

show that greedy does not pay and makes people lose the thing they have, same as the

crow which loses the piece of meat it has and the dead rat which it was chasing for.

In addition to that, the story can be easily exploited for teaching language as it is

profoundly teachable. Since many of the words in the story are new to pupils at this age,

they can easily be taught as new vocabulary. The pupils can be instructed to have a

new book to write down new vocabulary with its meaning in the book. Other than that,

the children can be asked to form new sentence using the words given. Children also

can be asked to fill in the blanks with the chosen word given.

Furthermore, the simple past tense words in the story, such as ‘was’, ‘flew’,

‘saw’, ‘took’, ‘had’, ‘decided’, ‘wanted’, ‘did not’ could become one of the grammar

activity. The children can be given worksheet on the simple past tense words chosen

from the story and they have to identify the root word. Other activity that could be

conducted is matching the correct root word. This would test the pupil’s understanding

on root word.

Different kinds of communicative tasks can be carried out through this story. This

story is ideal for reading aloud activity in a big group of pupils. The pupils will

understand the story better through reading aloud, apart from improving their

pronunciation skill. The pupils can be given puppets of the animal and ask them to act

out in front of the class. The pupils would enjoy taking on different animal characters

roles in the story. Encouraging pupils to express the opinions and feelings on the

character in the story is another way to make pupils to speak. For example the pupils

can be asked to think how Mr Crow felt. This could lead to a discussion that pupils

should not be greedy and be grateful with what they have.

The Greedy Crow

Mr Crow was very hungry. He flew everywhere to look for food.

Suddenly, he saw a piece of meat on the ground. He flew down to get it.

Mr Crow: Wow! That’s a big piece of meat!

He took the piece of meat up to a branch of a nearby tree. He was very happy.

As Mr Crow was about to eat, he saw Mr Hawk. Mr Hawk had a dead rat in his claws.

Mr Crow: Hello! Where did you get that rat?

Mr Hawk did not reply. He flew off as fast as he could. Mr Crow decided to follow Mr

Hawk. He wanted to eat the dead rat as well.

Mr Crow could not fly fast enough, so he did not get the dead rat. While chasing Mr

Hawk, his piece of meat fell to the ground.

Mr Eagle saw that incident. He quickly flew down to get the piece of meat.

Mr Crow: Stop! That’s mine!

Mr Eagle flew down towards Mr Crow. The piece of meat was between his claws.
