1.5 Interfaces and Test Access

This 4TEL application is used to test lines that reside in an EWSD switchwith SULIM line testing capabilities, via appropriately configured DigitalLine Units (DLUs) on LTG-B. Figure 1 is an overview of the connectionof 4TEL to the EWSD switch.

Figure 1-1: System 7000 Interface for an EWSD (SULIM) Switch - block diagram

The TSC 720 controls line access and connection, while the SULIMAccess Manager (SAM) implements the tone (DTMF) interface to theEWSD SULIM.

This tone interface allows 4TEL to:

• Learn line access data from the switch

• Request test access to a line

• Control test bus connection, and

• Release test access.

The EWSD SULIM control/access ports are hereafter referred to asSwitch Access Ports.

Once access data is learned, the TSC determines which RMU can gainmetallic access to the line to be tested.

Each RMU 745 installed for EWSD line testing requires a 4x16 test busmatrix (MAX 2000B). The matrix allows up to sixteen distinct 4-wireconnections to be mapped to the RMU backplanes single 4-wire output,Test Bus 2. Each of the matrices sixteen 4-wire connections run to anindividual DLU located in the EWSD switch. Hereafter, the sixteen 4-wirematrix connections are referred to as Test Ports.

Note: Line access and connection at EWSD remotes is accomplished inthe same manner as at an EWSD host switch.

1.6 Interfacing Procedure

Configure and test the 4TEL/switch interfaces as follows:

1. Check that the prerequisites in Chapter 2 have been met.

2. Check that Switch Access Ports are operating properly asdescribed in Chapter 3.

3. Set up each RMU 745 in the switch as described in Chapter 4.

4. Check each switch Test Port connected to the above RMU 745s asdescribed in Chapter 5.

2.3 Switch Equipment

This Interface Guide will enable 4TEL to be interfaced to Switch Accessand Test Ports in an EWSD switch running version 6.2 or a compatiblesoftware release, with SULIM access capability and properly configured,built-in DLUs on LTG-B. Compatibility with future builds and softwarereleases can be checked by consulting Teradyne.

2.4 Tools Required

To complete the interface configuration and test procedures, the followingtools are required:

• A voltmeter for detecting switch battery voltage at the switch TestPorts.

• A handset (micro telephone) is used to busy out telephone lines.

• A PC or VDT, capable of communicating with the TSC 720.

2.5 Test Data Required

A number of "Test Lines" and associated switch data have to be known tocheck the Switch Learn and Test Access functions.

1. Fill in the preliminary information on the Test Port check sheet. Anexample is shown in Figure 2.

Note: The complete check sheet is included in Appendix B.

2. Identify and record a Test Line for each Test Port for Test Accessfunction checks as described in the section Lines for Test PortCheck.

Lines for Test Port Check

Identify a Test Line for each Test Port connected to an RMU 745 matrixport and note it on the Test Port check sheet. The following procedureuses an example, illustrated in Figure 2 and Figure 3, for clarification.

Note: “Test Port” on the checksheet is the ID code of the DLU connectedto the associated MU matrix port. The term “Test Port” does not refer tothe number of the test “bus.”

The Test Line may be any telephone line which:

• is accessible via the Test Port in question

Page 11: Sulim Test

Chapter 2: Prerequisites

D03-699-43 • 4TEL System 7000 EWSD (SULIM) Interface Guide • Issue 3 7

• is free from service affecting faults - the moderate fault condition on aSample Line is acceptable

• can be busied out conveniently.

On the Test Port check sheet list the following, for each Test Port:

1. In the first column (MU Matrix Port), list each port of the MAX2000B matrix which is connected to a DLU.

2. In the second column (Test Port (DLU)), enter the ID Code(number) of the DLU to which the matrix port is connected.

Note: 4TEL software must use the switch DLU ID codes to identify TestPorts. The switch will respond to a Test Access request by providing atest connection between the DLU and the line specified in the request ifthis is possible. If 4TEL is not using the correct Test Port number, the testresult will usually be an open-circuit condition.

Chapter 3: Switch Access Port Check

3.1 Introduction

This chapter provides a short procedure to verify the proper operation ofthe 4TEL System’s switch access function.

3.2 Switch Access Port Check Procedure

The Switch Access Ports assigned to 4TEL, and the communicationslinks between 4TEL, the SAM unit, and these ports should be checked toensure that they are configured and connected for operation with 4TEL.This procedure can be performed where the TSC 720 terminal is located.

1. From a TSC terminal, attempt to test a phone line that exists in theEWSD switch.

2. Monitor the dial-out lines on the SAM to determine if the SAM dialsthe SULIM port in the EWSD.

• If the SULIM port answers, proper signaling between the SAMand SULIM is indicated by DTMF tones.

• If the SULIM port does not answer, determine whether DTMFtones are reaching the SULIM unit. If they are, there may be aswitch-related problem. If they are not, refer to the 4TEL TSC720 SULIM Access Manager Guide for troubleshootinginformation.

4.3 Power Up Check

Use the following procedure to verify proper power up of each RMU 745:

1. Isolate the RMU 745 from the switch battery supply momentarily.

2. Check that the indicator lights correspond to an error-free bootup:

• The Control Board (CB) ALARM indicator (LED) should flashduring the bootup sequence and should be unlit at the end ofthe bootup sequence

• The Measure indicator light (LED3) on the DCMU board shouldflash during self-calibration (part of the bootup sequence) andshould be unlit at the end of the bootup sequence

• The Alarm (OB) light should flash during the bootup sequenceand should be unlit at the end of the bootup sequence.

If the RMU 745 does not power up correctly, refer to the RMU 745Faultfinding document for troubleshooting instructions.

4.4 RMU Sample Line Check

The RMU 745 must be able to dial back to the repair or service bureauvia its Sample Line. Check that the Sample Line has been properlyprovisioned by using a handset to call back on the Sample Line (refer tothe Figure A-2 in Appendix A).

Chapter 5: Test Port Checks

5.1 Introduction

This chapter describes how to test each of the host and remote site TestPorts connected to an RMU 745 matrix port, i.e., verifying access to theEWSD via each connected DLU.

Note: It may be necessary for two people (who are in communication viaa telephone line) to carry out the following procedure. One person caninput the commands to the TSC while the second uses the voltmeter tomonitor the appropriate Test Pair at a remote site. This may also benecessary at the Host, unless the Switch Access Ports and RMU 745 arein close proximity.

5.2 Test Port Check Procedure

Check each Test Port according to the following procedure:

Note: 4TEL software must use the switch DLU ID codes to identify TestPorts. The switch will respond to a Test Access request by providing atest connection between the DLU and the line specified in the request ifthis is possible. If 4TEL is not using the correct Test Port number, the testresult will usually be an open-circuit condition.

1. Access 4TEL in an appropriate manner.

2. From the Test Port check sheet, identify the first port to be tested.

3. Check that the Test Line given against the Test Port to be tested isidle.

4. Using 4TEL, perform a Demand Test on the idle line, and check forthe correct response. 4TEL should detect Office Battery, anyCable present, etc. Refer to the Acceptance Procedure in the4TEL Installation and Commissioning Guide for typical DemandTest results.

5. Busy out the line, then perform a second Demand Test on the line.4TEL should detect the busy line. Again, refer to the AcceptanceProcedure in the 4TEL Installation and Commissioning Guidefor typical Demand Test results.

6. The Test Port check procedure is concluded when all of the TestPorts connected to the test matrix have been checked in the abovemanner.

Appendix C: Interface Confirmation afterMAX 2000B Retrofit

Certain RMU 745 equipment has been installed without being equipped with aMAX 2000B Matrix. In order to expand system capabilities, a MAX 2000B matrixcan be retrofitted to the RMU 745 unit.

After a MAX 2000B Matrix has been retrofitted to an RMU 745, it is necessaryto re-establish and test the interface to accommodate the new capabilities.Follow the instructions in Chapters 2 through 5. Pre-existing connections shouldbe spot checked to see that they have not been disturbed.

B

Baud rate Signal modulation rate. The baud rate is equivalent to digital bits persecond if each signal represents one bit.

Bit BInary digiT (BIT): An element in binary notation which can take the twovalues "0" (ON) or "1" (OFF).

C

CU 4TEL switch-based Control Unit which communicates with the switchprocessor via switch Control Ports to set up test access andcommunicates with a 4TEL MU to make measurements on the accessedline.

Control interface The Control Interface or Control Port is the communications port via whichan LTS will carry out Learn and Test Access transactions with the switchprocessor. A Test Access request will specify the required line using theline DN or EN and the Measurement Interface via which the line will beaccessed.

Control port See Control Interface above.

D

DLU Digital Line Unit: a frame in the EWSD which contains the subscriber linecircuits.

DN Directory Number: The "telephone number" which telephone users use toaccess a particular line (or group of lines) on the PSTN. Where the line isin a hunt group the number will access the first idle line in the group. TestAccess to a specific line in the group can only be obtained by using the EN(see below).

E

EN Equipment Number: Identifies a unit of switch equipment on which a singletelephone line may be terminated. The EN enables individual lines in ahunt group to be accessed.

ETS External Test Equipment

EWSD Siemens Digital Electronic Switch System (switch).

F

Field Part of a group of data characters with particular significance.

LTS Line Test System: A system (such as 4TEL) which is interfaced to switchTest Access and Control Ports to access and test telephone lines

Learn Function that enables a 4TEL CU to access line data from the switch andbuild or modify the CU routine testing database.

M

MAX 2000 Matrix to connect EWSD test ports to RMU745 Test Bus.

Measurement Interface (MI) The Measurement Interface or Test Port is a switch interface at which theswitch will provide test connection to the line to be tested via a Test Matrix. The LTS will have test bus connections to a number of MeasurementInterfaces to facilitate Test Access to all lines to be tested by the LTS.

The term "MI" is used in certain switch technologies (e.g. System 1240) forthe software parameter which identifies a particular MeasurementInterface.

Modem MOdulator/DEModulator: Device which converts digital information intoanalogue, voice-frequency form for transmission over a normal telephoneline and converts received transmissions back to digital information.

MU Measurement Unit. 4TEL test head installed in switch which accesses andmeasures the characteristics of local telephone lines under the control ofthe 4TEL System Controller.

P

PSTN Public Switched Telephone Network: Telephone network provided forpublic use by a PTO or private company.

PTO Public Telephone Organization: PSTN provider, sometimes known as PTT.

T

TAL Test Access Location: a 4TEL software identifier which represents one ora group of commoned switch test access mechanisms to which 4TEL isconnected. The TAL links;

• groups of switch lines

• switch test access mechanisms (one or more) which provide access tothem; and

• 4TEL MU Test Buses which are connected to that mechanism andthus have access to all of the lines in the group.

A TAL is unique to the groups of lines which it covers and thus representsexclusive access. In other words, no line "owned" by a TAL may be ownedby another TAL. However, a 4TEL MU may be connected with more thanone TAL and, conversely, a TAL may be connected with more than oneMU.

TB Test Bus

TE Test Equipment

Test matrix Test Access equipment to which a number of line modules are connected. The line modules are the switch equipment providing termination forsubscriber's lines. The test matrix can provide a test access connectionbetween any Test Port connected to the matrix and any line terminationconnected to the matrix.

Test Port See Measurement Interface.
