The Great Barrier Reef is a vast expanse of coral and

seaweed that spans a lot of the east coast of Queensland. Inthis reef are many fish species and plant species that aren’tfound any where else in the world. This makes it a favoritespot for divers and tourists. The Great Barrier Reef is also a

living thing as well as an eco-system. It is also the onlyliving thing on earth that is visible from space. This is over3000km of coral and fish life ranging from 15 to 150 awayfrom the shore line. The reef can also be over 65km wide insome parts making the most amazing underwaterexperience imaginable.

What it’s like?

This reef could die by 2020 because of global warming, oilspills and excessive tourism. Loads of fish species andplant species will die and an amazing world wonder will

disappear as well as a massive amount of tourism in thatarea. This can also affect the economy and people aroundQueensland, raising prices for every thing. Many thingssuch as fishing, global warming, pollution and crown of thorns starfish are primary problems in this issue.

Will It Die Out?

With fishing you have 3 main problems. Over fishing is one thatmay be the worst, for example catching to much giant tritoncan completely destroy the food chain. Next is water pollution.Water pollution from boats causes of water to be more… dirtythen other water. Finally there’s habitat destruction. Habitatdestruction happens from Trawling, anchors and nets.

The effects of global warming on the reef has beendevastating. When the ocean heats, it increases coralbleaching. Coral bleaching can kill coral extremelyquickly, turning a lighter color and dying quickly in

the heated water. Global warming is mainly caused byoveruse of electrical appliances which burns morecoal. The coal causes smoke that floats up into theatmosphere and contaminates the ozone. This

destroys the ozone which keeps most of the heat of the sun out and it heats up the earth. Which of coursecauses coral bleaching.

Pollution happens in 3 ways. Oil spills being the main way. Oil spills

cover the reef blocking out sun and killing fish as it go’s. It also killsplenty of coral and underwater plants that get easily poisoned. Next

is water pollution. Water pollution happens when things like farm

run-off water hits the reef and lowers water quality. Farm run-off

water usually is caused by Over-grazing, excessive use of fertilizerand the use of pesticide. The last cause of water pollution is litter.

Litter finds it’s way into our water systems and dirties our water and

finds it’s way into the reefs. Fish try to eat the litter (mistaking it for

something else) and choke to death. For example: a turtle eating a

plastic bag.

The Crown of Thorns starfish is big threat to coralreefs. It preys on coral polyps. This kills coralquickly and effectively. Poor water conditions

make this worse, as well as when fishers fish outthe food the starfish feeds on, the starfish attackscorals a lot more, destroying a lot of coral whichcould destroy a whole species. In 2000 the greatbarrier reef lost 66% of the live covered coral onthe sampled “reefs”.

The growth of Great Barrier Reef over the last fewdecades has decreased. This is mainly because of oilspills and global warming. Over the years the reef hasgotten used to the continuous ebb and flow of the

tides. When the sea levels decreased, the coral diedbecause it needed some form of water that it didn’tget. Also it’s growth has been stunted by thingsgetting into the reef. Whether it be oil, rubbish, nets

or hooks.

Growth over decades

No more reef. It’s that simple. The Great Barrier Reef willfade from existence slowly becoming smaller and smaller as

coral and fish die. The aftermath of this will devastateunderwater eco-systems and will destroy fishing industries. This will disrupt our fishing department and will raise pricesof things across the board due to loss of one reef on our east

coast.
