SUMMARY: THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

It is a story of Holden Caulfield, a boy from Pency Prep school in Agerstown,

Pennsylvania. In this story Holden share his views about his life, friends & faculty of school.

He criticizes his friends & faculty for being superficial & fake. He has been expelled from

pency for his poor academics. Disappointed with holden for being expelled from pency, Mr.

Spencer an history teacher of holden send him a letter telling him to meet him. Holden

decided to meet Mr. Spencer. There holden was given lecture by Mr. Spencer regarding

responsibilities, hardwork & various other things which lead to holden get bored. Holden

doesnt want to hurt feeling of his teacher, so he listens to his lecture. Holden lies to him by

saying that he has some work which he has to finish it. After returning to his room, holden

had a fight with his roommate. Therefore he decides to leave the school in the night.

He packs his bag & heads towards New York. After reaching New York instead of

going home he decides to spend some days alone, therefore he checks into the hotel. In theevening he went to a bar & had a dance with girls. There he meets with a prostitute. The

prostitute was also of same age of holden, therefore holden become uncomfortable with the

situation & simply pays to prostitute for the time spend with him. After some time prostitute

& pimp returns & knocks holden room for more money. Holden leaves the room & decided

to roam the city. Then he calls to his old girlfriend Sally Hayes & make a date to view a

musical as well as to go for ice skating at Rockefeller center. While drinking coffee with his

girlfriend, holden invites sally to run away with him, but she refuses finally holden gives up.

After living for three days in the city with full of drunk & alone, he decides to go

home to meet his sister Phoeb when the parents are away. Holden share his plan to his sisterthat he wants to be the catcher in the rye. As soon as parents return he leaves the house.

Before leaving the city, holden decides to visit his favorite ex-teacher Mr. Antolini at night.

Mr. Antolini gives him a bunch of advices. During there conversation Mr. Antolini got drunk

& heads off to bed. In the midnight holden wake-up & sees that Mr. Antolini patting his head.

Therefore he decides to leave the house & spend mid night by sleeping on a bench at station.

When he wakes up he thinks that Mr. Antolini behavior was correct.

Finally holden decides that instead of going home he decides to go west. When he tell

this plan to his sister, she decides that she want to go with him. Holden refuse her offer which

makes her upsets. In order to reassures her that he is not going holden takes her sister to a

zoo.

At the end of his story he misses all the people he had meet & also says that dont

ever tell anybody anything, if you do, you start missing everybody.
