Nelson Mandela fought for equality in South Africa by joining organizations like the African National Congress and agitating violently for equality. His actions led to some jail time, where he studied law, and became inspired by Gandhi, the nonviolent activist. After, he changed his ways to a more peaceful approach. He was chosen to become the first black South African President and modeled forgiveness to the entire Nation. 2. SUMMARY OF PROJECT Briefly explain your project and its conclusion. Include: How and why did change happen and what was the impact? Why is it historically significant? What historical meaning or importance can we learn from your findings?

 1.  THESIS STATEMENT   Present the project’s argument or interpretation in two sentences.  If you are using the NHD theme, you might want to make it evident in your thesis statement.

For our project we chose one of the many famously well known leaders, Nelson Mandela. We created a thesis statement that showed what his main goal throughout his whole life was. We included some of the most important key points in his life that helped black people, in our website pages. In South Africa, the apartheid system was one thing that really gave no equality to blacks. For over three decades, white peoplpe in South Africa were in control. Nelson was an important leader that they looked up to and       3.  Required for projects using the National History Day theme only. Explain how this project integrates the NHD theme “Leadership & Legacy in [Chicago/Illinois] History” into its argument.  We feel this project integrates “Leadership and Legacy because Nelson Mandela is a great candidate that shows those qualities. He was greatly known for all his accomplishments in South Africa and how he managed to keep fighting after all his years in prison. Not only did he help abolish apartheid, but he also became the first black president in South Africa.     4.  PROCESS

A. What historical question did you start off with—and how did it change once you began doing your research?

From the beginning we had this question in mind because we already had prior knowledge on Nelson Mandela and how great of a leader he was. We just managed to come up with the question by incorporating what we knew he that he was greatly known for, his leadership to bringing equality to South Africa?

B. What kinds of sources did you use as evidence to develop your argument (for example, letters, photographs, government documents, interviews, etc.)?

Mostly what our group had used to develop our argument was photographs and speeches that were given by him.

C. Select one piece of evidence that you used and explain how it influenced your argument.

We had managed to find a data table on South Africa’s population that showed a great population difference in the time of the apartheid system. It showed that there was a white minority and black majority, but yet the white people were in charge and that really comes to show how much inequality there was between the people.

D. List libraries (other than school), museums, and other institutions that you visited to do your research.

     None.
