AAlisa Peters, CMP, CMMChicago Indoor Racing

From the PresidentAs I sit in my office on this beautiful early summer morning, writing my first 2010-2011 president’s letter, I think the best place to start our conversation is by explaining how passionate I am about MPI, and why...

I became a member of the Chicago Area Chapter in 2002 when I moved to this city. My mentor and long-time friend, Thom Ward, told me for years that there was really only one place one wanted to be when deciding to enter a new market. In October 2003, I found myself unexpectedly “not needed” (as many of you reading this may be). I definitely had to clear my head and regroup. That day, through my MPI membership, I received an invitation to attend Chicago Indoor Racing’s Grand Opening Party. The minute I picked up my invitation I knew Chicago Indoor Racing was where I wanted to be. I immediately submitted my résumé, and the rest is history! I attended the Grand Opening Party... as the new director of meetings and events.

Through Chicago Indoor Racing’s involvement and partnership with MPI, the meeting and events market became 70% of our business. The board of directors added me to their table and appointed me as a managing partner three years ago. I credit the growth of Chicago Indoor Racing largely to our relationship and involvement with MPI. We have never approached our membership from an “instant sales” angle, but more as a long-term investment. While the company has had the benefit of sales (our most recent MPI business came from two fellow suppliers and netted $50k), the education through the classroom and conversations with colleagues has netted far greater benefits. Chicago Indoor Racing Addison was built with hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings through advice about where to best invest money.

My goal for the upcoming year is to find out what makes your MPI membership important, where you find value and where you don’t. The MPI-CAC Board has been spending lots of time asking its members questions (from survey information) and developing a plan to provide additional member benefits, such as education and events that allow relationship-building throughout the upcoming year. We are re-crafting areas that we can (News&Views will go largely green, helping to do our part for the environment) while re-investing in areas you want back (the Awards Gala will return... we heard you).

Please join us by getting involved. You are a customer, owner, manager and business partner in MPI. We want your involvement, feedback and help! It is my hope that our team leaves this organization as all of my predecessors have... better than they found it, and with the hopes that it will continue to improve even more in the future.

Best Wishes,

Alisa Peters, CMP, CMMPresident MPI-CAC

AFrom the Committee Chair and Vice Chair Branching Out: Exploring the Meeting and Events Industry

Ah, summer in Chicago! Finally, we have gorgeous weather so we can get out and about to explore our city once again. We can head out for bike rides on lakefront paths, rediscover parks and even explore diverse neighborhoods at the many street festivals. Why not take the time to explore the meeting and events industry, as well?

In the spirit of exploration and discovery that the summer inspires, this issue offers members the opportunity to investigate the many different worlds of meeting and event professionals. The feature article, “Branching Out,” explores the variety of career opportunities within the hospitality industry, and delves deeper into a few select career paths by offering glimpses into the lives of the professionals who have those jobs. The branches of our industry reach far and wide, and will continue to expand and change; it is important to remember that they all work together as an interconnected support system. We hope you will take time to research the opportunities and services that are available and reach out to your fellow members for support and ideas.

Since we were children, the question of “What do I want to be when I grow up?” was on our minds, or our parents and friends. My niece knew since middle school that she wanted to be a marine biologist. She has never wavered and is on track to pursue this career. For many people, they have a dream, and work hard to fulfill it. Yet it may not be fully realized until later in life. And, of course, there are those who begin in one area, realize it’s not the right path, then switch to something totally different, or perhaps angle slightly away from the original plan. The good news is that while the hospitality industry itself has ups and downs, there are an infinite number of roles for members. We hope that you will continue to use partnerships, educational programs, books and other resources to find your place. It may involve several different skill sets, which is really the optimum case. Continue exploring this industry and work in areas where your talents are needed and you find your niche.

Companies are now getting into the game, putting special offers up to users that are within a certain amount of feet from their locations. It is like a giant Easter egg hunt, but offers better prizes, such as free Starbucks lattes or 10% off at favorite restaurants. It also allows users to retrieve all files from any online browser (even a business center computer) by accessing them from the dropbox.com website! www.dropbox.com

Ted.com | Videos and Free Learning From Your DesktopFor those of you that don’t know, TED began in 1984 as a conference that brought together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. With two annual conferences—the TED spring conference in California and TED summer global conference in Oxford, England—TED.com features the best of each TED Conference. It allows access to the video at no cost and at any time. As the segments are only 18 minutes long, they are a perfect way to spend your lunch or break; you can easily choose your speaker or topic.www.ted.com

NOW, Discover Your Strengths

Authors: Marcus Buckingham &Donald O. Clifton, PhD

Reviewed by: Valerie J. Repasky, Elgin Community College

This is definitely a positive read! The authors believe that mankind is fixated with faults and failings; and although they deserve study, they reveal very little about strengths. To excel, individuals need to understand their own unique strengths that also have their own patterns. We also need to become experts at finding, describing, applying, practicing and refining those strengths. The shift is definitely from pointing out weaknesses to discovering strengths!

The authors state that they wrote this book to start a revolution—a strengths’ revolution. They believe that every organization must not only recognize that each employee is unique, but capitalize on these differences and build their entire companies around the strengths of each person. However, most entities are still focused on fixing employees’ weaknesses rather than building their strengths.

NOW, Discover Your Strengths supplies readers with personal identification codes, used to log onto their website to complete an individual StrengthsFinder Profile that will isolate signature themes. There are 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder Profile themes. This profiling helps readers to identify their own individual strengths. The remaining chapters instruct them how to further build on, as well as manage, their unique profiles.

An informative and self-defining read!

Outliers: The Story of Success

Author: Malcolm Gladwell

Reviewed by: Sally Magallanes, CMPIndependent Meeting & Marketing Manager

Outliers. Its primary definition is “Something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body.” “Someone” might be substituted for “something.” Through intense research, Gladwell delves into what makes success. Why do some people make it to the top, become “the best of the best,” achieve fame, honor and money? Is it hard work or luck? Is a mathematical genius smart, or just smart enough? If one has a talent, how many hours need to be dedicated to achieve greatness? Gladwell interweaves true stories and the history behind people that are highly successful, and those that could have been, save several exclusive factors. Unique opportunity—or multiple ones—is the key. He also explains that analytical intelligence is very different from the practical form.

Cultural legacy is a concept that Gladwell explores in detail and describes how it shapes an individual or society. What a particular city or ethnic group practices, and how it defines their lives, is fascinating. When are the beliefs, thought processes, actions (or lack of) productive and at the core of success? When are they positive and at other times deadly? Should a particular cultural legacy be completely undone for someone to succeed in a certain profession? Low or high power cultures also play an integral part in how people in different situations react. Behavior and communications absolutely are formed by the overall cultures of our families and ancestors’ experiences. Can a culture of honor ever be a bad thing? Gladwell will explain in his factual, but never boring, style. Readers will also learn how cultural legacy and opportunity literally created his life. Gladwell truly knows of what he writes and his diligent efforts are well worth the read. Outliers educates and uncovers assumptions or (sometimes) misguided conclusions.

In Memoriam…

(February 22, 1942 - March 24, 2010)Dave Hinton’s personal and professional legacy will live on. And on. In late March, Dave succumbed to an illness and left this earth.

Perhaps he left too soon, but a rich history of family relationships, as well as many hospitality industry friends and memories, remain.

Dave’s leadership, networking skills, innovation and sense of humor made him one of the outstanding professionals in the industry—known throughout Chicago and the world.

Dave was always an entrepreneur. In 1986, he founded hinton+grusich, a national hotel sales company, with Bill Grusich, CMP. He served as president until his 2003 retirement. Dave was extremely active in the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the Association Forum of Chicagoland. Perhaps his most well-known accomplishment was helping launch the annual Association Forum of Chicagoland’s Holiday Showcase. It remains one of the premier association tradeshow events, and a hallmark of the winter holiday season. Dave was also active with the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau (CCTB), serving on its board in the early 1990s. He received the prestigious “Individual Hall of Fame” award from Meeting Professionals International Chicago Area Chapter (MPI-CAC) in 1993, and remained an integral part of the chapter.

Yes, Dave’s memory will live on through his family (five adult children, nine siblings, grandchildren and many

others), company, close friendships and many special qualities of a fine Irishman. He loved having family portraits taken—many were on display for the hundreds of mourners that stood in line to greet his family. Son, Kevin, is CEO of hinton+grusich and is grateful for the advice and guidance of his father. Thank you, Dave Hinton, you will be missed!

It is early evening June 1 in beautiful downtown Chicago. The glistening blue lake is hugging Navy Pier while white sailboats bob placidly beside it. People are running and biking along the pathways; horse hoofs are hitting the pavement as carriages leave the Hancock building and the white clouds over the city push ever eastward.

I love Chicago and I have loved serving Meeting Professionals International Chicago Area Chapter. Thank you for letting me hold the chapter in trust for you! You work hard, that is why our board, committees and volunteers work hard for you. When you come to an MPI-CAC event or gathering we want you to feel at home. However, MPI-CAC is technically a nomadic community! We have no real home base, yet each month our wonderful sponsors generously offer their facilities allowing us to host you. It is a great concept; but what a great responsibility to satisfy all our partners—both hosts and attendees. This is where the hard work comes in with our committed volunteers…

EducationA detailed education strategic plan was developed to elevate all MPI-CAC learning interactions. This programming was unleashed in January, March and May. Feeling smarter yet?

Who took a L.E.A.P. with us this spring? Those who could not attend missed the coolest thing since Ringling Bros.® and Barnum & Bailey® “The Greatest Show on Earth!®” More to come in that vein next year!

LeadershipWe changed the culture that had kept committee chairs in the “know” and committee members in the dark! Every committee leader is now trained via monthly live meetings. In addition, our leadership community now has a newsletter to further facilitate communication.

MarketingThe chapter launched its new website in August 2009; it truly reflects our modern and tech-savvy member community. Get involved by writing for the web and social media!

SponsorshipMPI-CAC is awed by the benevolence of our sponsors. This year we enjoyed $1 million in sponsorship dollars to provide you with a world-class, yet local, MPI experience.

EventsWe listened to our members and recalibrated event registration fees. We appreciate your membership during the downturn and are working hard to make every one of your dollars count!

MembershipWe had great aims for achieving increased membership numbers, but the market was against us. However, Chicago is proud of its Chapter-brand promise and we will be working hard to both retain and gain new members in the coming year.

PerformanceMetrics matter for successful meetings and they also matter in measuring an organization’s success. In the Chicago Area Chapter we have measured the board’s performance, management, events, programs, investments, financials… you name it, we put a yardstick to it. We are in great shape!

In closing, thank you for the opportunity to serve you. I hope that if you are not currently active, that you consider joining a committee or taking on a leadership position. Wishing you an enjoyable summer,

Looking Ahead...

What an exciting journey we have been on over these past several years. Yes, it’s been hard work. Yet with challenge comes the silver lining of innovation… and our chapter has been blessed with a significant amount of it as we head into the 2010-2011 fiscal year. So… what’s new, different and “in it for you” in the upcoming year? Ultimately the overarching goal for our team will be delivering a richer member experience with a greater return on your investment. Our talented group of volunteer leaders (over 254) has plans to deliver the following exciting initiatives. EducationWe will be kicking off the year with Jeremy Gutsche, an innovation expert, award-winning author of Exploiting Chaos, and the founder of TrendHunter.com, the world’s largest network for trend-spotting and innovation. November will feature the exciting Educational Conference with a focus on technology. Our MPI-CAC Signature Education Series will be featured throughout the year showcasing topics that you requested. Finally, our new Leadership Conference will be similar to the exciting 2010 L.E.A.P. event, with a slightly shortened day and the Awards Gala event to immediately follow (members wanted it back). Membership Benefits & DiscountsThe Membership Team is developing an affinity discount-card program that will allow all members to realize savings simply by showing these cards at participating member venues (rewarding you for “Buying MPI,” personally or professionally). This is not just a supplier benefit; planners can feature their firms, venues and products as well! The Membership team will also be looking to build your industry community by actively recruiting new professionals to join our growing organization and keeping the current members by making the return on involvement easier to realize.

Strategic Alliances & Special EventsThe chapter will continue to deliver a variety of special events, allowing you to mix, mingle, build relationships and make new friendships. The Special Events Team has an exciting array of new and innovative venues in mind and will be building events at the same lower rates that we have been able to deliver over the past year—all with the same unique opportunities for making connections. This team will be looking to partner with likeminded associations and organizations to deliver new and exciting friends for you, adding value to your member experience. Free Leadership DevelopmentThere has never been a better time to engage (or re-engage) as a volunteer leader within the Chicago Area Chapter of MPI to truly leverage the value of your membership. The Leadership Development Team will be working hard to bring exciting FREE leadership skill-enhancement opportunities to our volunteer leaders (adding value for their employers). With a whole host of volunteer opportunities, even those members with very limited windows of opportunity can participate. Whether by providing innovative education, offering a network of friends that allows you to build a better business and/or meeting or through delivering benefits only available to you as an MPI member, the board’s primary goal is to increase the value of your membership. As fellow members, it is our wish that you find both personal and professional resources that strengthen your positions within our industry’s global multi-billion dollar marketplace. We believe you can use your MPI membership to do this!

PStrong Financial Foundation

Planning our forecast for the 2009-10 program year was not an easy feat. With the economy still fluctuating, membership forecasts uncertain, and event registrations on the decline from the previous program year, our Board of Directors knew the 2009-10 budget would be a “best laid plan.” In an effort to maintain the strong financial stability, everyone played a role supporting the needs of our members.

Response to the Economic ShiftAs the economy began to recover, the Chicago Area Chapter recognized there was still an opportunity to support our members in need. A second complimentary education program for members in transition was offered, postings to the MPI-CAC Online Job Board remained free and registration pricing for all events were re-evaluated, with fee reductions made across multiple events.

Investment PortfolioThe chapter’s reserves are currently invested with Morgan Stanley and remained stable through the tumultuous economy. Our diversified and well-managed portfolio realized a 15% gain this year. Our position is still strong.

Strategic Partnership ProgramSponsorships are the lifeline to MPI-CAC. Over 100 partnering organizations supported the chapter from education and networking events to membership initiatives. All of the committees and the Sponsorship team were successful in securing a multitude of 100% in-kind sponsorships allowing funds to be allocated towards the Professional Development Grants, educational speakers, marketing campaigns, advanced chapter technology and much more. We are looking forward to another successful year with our strategic partners. Give us a call if you are interested in becoming an MPI-CAC sponsor!

2009-2010 Chapter Highlights – Membership

Last year’s drastic change in the economy required quick responses and flexibility in our programming. The ever-evolving economy 2010 year required the same action from MPI-CAC. We began the year in July 2009 with 1,274 members. As of May 31, 2010, membership did decrease, ending at 1,196 with an average retention rate of 71.17%.

Membership Recruitment EffortsIn an effort to boost recruitment, MPI-CAC launched the Netherlands Incentive Membership Campaign in partnership with the MPI Netherlands Chapter. The Chicago Chapter member that recruited the greatest number of new, full-time members between July 1, 2009 and June 30, 2010 will win a free seven-night trip to The Netherlands! The Netherlands Chapter is offering the members in their chapter the same incentive with a seven-night stay in Chicago. The winner will be announced in July 2010.

Professional Development GrantsOur chapter continues to serve its members locally by providing Educational Grants that can support

a number of different opportunities throughout the year. Examples are fees for the CMP application, registration for MPI’s semi-annual educational conferences and international MPI conferences. New this year was the introduction of the Membership Grants, enabling members in need the opportunity to maintain their membership in MPI. Over $5,000 was awarded in both educational and membership grants.

MPI-CAC Membership ActivationThe Membership Committee took an active role in welcoming new members and assisting others in truly activating their membership. Prior to every event, the Membership Committee hosted a New Member Orientation, providing an opportunity to meet other members, learn more about the organization and better understand how to make the most of MPI membership. Every new member was contacted by the Membership Committee to provide guidance on getting involved and answer any questions. Through these calls, over 80 new members joined committees and donated their time to MPI by volunteering, while developing new relationships with fellow committee members.

With the influx in committee members, the Leadership Development Committee recognized the need for providing additional information related to chapter operations to all committee volunteers. The committee launched monthly Volunteer Webinars allowing all committee volunteers the opportunity to better understand exactly how the organization operates. It also initiated the monthly Talking Points eNewsletter, highlighting the most important messages for all volunteers.

2009-2010 Chapter Highlights

Throughout the year, hundreds of volunteers worked together to produce a series of excellent educational and networking events. These events offered members multiple opportunities for both professional development and building relationships.

You Spoke, We Listened! With programming for both educational and networking events, Meeting Professionals International Chicago Area Chapter (MPI-CAC) made a commitment to meet the needs of its members. The topics for education programs were based on results of the education survey distributed in fall 2009 and suggestions provided in program evaluations. Evaluation scores and planner attendance at events, which met the educational needs of our membership, greatly increased.

The Special Events Committee developed events to Network Different. For both the fall and winter networking programs, two locations hosted simultaneous events in downtown Chicago and a suburban location. A reduced registration fee also helped meet the needs of the Chicagoland-area membership. A partnership with SmartSource AV Rentals enabled the events to be linked through webcams and Twitterfeeds, allowing participants to interact with the other locations.

Introduction by: Sally Magallanes, CMP,Independent Meeting & Marketing Manager

In the meeting world, the roles of planner and supplier were once simple and clearly defined. While the economy may have eliminated some traditional roles, there are a rich variety of growing opportunities that professionals specialize in and some that will always remain.

The industry “tree” displays a vast majority of these areas, with some that don’t neatly fit into what was once a conventional planner/supplier role. Examples are faculty, president or chief operating officer, marketing specialist, writer/editor, technology trainer or developer. This collection of interviews offers short exposés on the career paths of a selection of fellow Meeting Professionals International Chicago Area Chapter (MPI-CAC) members, offering insiders’ views on the wealth of opportunities within the industry.

For new or veteran members, the following interviews with planner and supplier professionals will also serve to help understand these other roles within the industry, including who these professionals are, what they do and their value. (Due to space limitations, we could not highlight every industry area.) A reader may be inspired by the insight shared, or desire to partner with a member supplier for future business.

strategy and business-driven messaging and branding. 2) Strenuous financial management, focusing on cost control, process improvement, ardent negotiating and vendor partnerships from the first point of contact through implementation. 3) Forging strong connections with others within the hospitality industry is an enriching part of my work.

Whether one is a meeting planner or supplier, it’s important to remain grounded in the basic understanding that work should be focused on helping organizations achieve their objectives through meetings, incentives, conferences and events.

While some may perceive the last couple of years as having a potential negative impact on the industry, with reduced budgets and staffing resources, the challenges faced by planners and suppliers have also created new opportunities that may shape the way the industry delivers its services in the future.

“It’s easy to get stuck in a creative rut. We tend to organize and implement the same tactics because they are successful. But 2010 will be the year for taking risks. Take risks, be bold and surprise attendees with ingenuity and value,” says Vicki Hawarden, vice president of knowledge for Meeting Professionals International, Dallas, Texas. Hawarden suggests that industry professionals should focus on the following issues—there are opportunities for both planners and suppliers in each.

Integrating Social Media

Facebook, Twitter, blogs and podcasts are just a few of the social media tools that most people can easily name. We know that people are creating online social communities, creating opportunities to incorporate them before, during and after meetings. “Social media has been on the scene for awhile, but event planners have been letting this communication outlet grow organically. In 2010, planners will need to accommodate and guide the conversation during small to large events,” Hawarden says.

Exploring Hybrid Events

Hybrid meetings are those that combine both a virtual and physical presence. This could arguably be seen as the hottest trend in the industry, according to Hawarden. “Attendees on the ground and around the world will be able to consume the exact same content.”

Managing Budgets and Expectations

A reduced budget isn’t necessarily bad news, but it does mean that meeting professionals will be expected to deliver more with fewer resources. “Suppliers have already noticed this trend and have started to emphasize cost savings and focus less on the perks,” Hawarden says.

Recession-Proofing Event Careers

This is a competitive industry, making it even more important for planners and suppliers to stand out, especially during tough economic times. “The successful candidate will have energy, a willingness to learn, solid business and communication skills and a personality that can deal with people of all levels,” says Dawn Penfold, president

of MeetingJobs.com. “Don’t burn bridges ever in this industry and have fun.”

Adopting Strategic Meetings Management

It really is good news when planners and suppliers work together to control costs and demonstrate a return on investment. It helps to ensure that time and money are allocated efficiently and drives bottom-line results.

“Aligning meeting programs to corporate objectives and having the data to demonstrate the impact of meeting spend are critical to short and long-term success,” says

Steve O’Malley, vice president and general manager at Maxvantage, a strategic alliance between American Express Business Travel and Maritz Travel.

Emphasizing Local Events

MPI’s FutureWatch 2010 reinforces what many people in Chicago have probably recognized: local events are popular again. With more meetings located closer to home, fewer participants can expect to travel long distances to get onsite. When meetings are local, it’s been shown to generate higher attendance.

Other top issues facing meeting professionals include defining a sustainability model, increasing a focus on

finding creative solutions to achieve event goals without compromising budgets, and obtaining C-Level buy-in so that planners can demonstrate the value of their meetings. “Planners must be equipped to respectfully disagree with the executives and bring the numbers to prove it,” Hawarden says.

Most importantly, the focus should be on increasing RSVPs. Mother Nature, the potential of pandemics and economic issues have made it difficult, to say the least, when trying to predict attendance for large meetings.

As Daniel Fortin, president of DNL Logistique in Montreal, Canada, says, “There’s no substitute for the synergy that can be created when people come together.” His advice is to not lose focus on the value of the basics: make reminder calls, invite popular guest speakers, send feedback surveys and think creatively.

A day of education, networking, inspiration and recognition was enjoyed by all during this one-day event held at Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers on April 26, 2010. Modeled after the TED Conference, the Leadership Education & Awards Program (L.E.A.P.) featured a series of electrifying 18-minute sessions led by innovative speakers, offering attendees more bang for the buck!

Presenters from all arenas spoke on a wide variety of topics, ranging from leadership through social responsibility to risk taking and driving off the beaten path. Even Bruce MacMillan, CEO of Meeting Professionals International, made a special appearance! As moderator, Brian Burkhart skillfully interwove all of the various concepts, creating smooth segues between presenters. One thing all the speakers had in common was passion—passion for their ideas, the industry and the future.

The generous donations of sponsors contributed to the tremendous success of this breakthrough event. Spotme provided their signature electronic handheld devices, which worked networking magic! This innovative tool offers valuable communication and participant management

features, such as virtual business cards (complete with photos) and the “Spotme” feature, which can actually help users locate specific people at an event!

Sharing the spotlight with the presenters and new technology were the award winners! In between presentations, awards were presented to recognize the efforts of dedicated members over

the past year. (See the list of all award winners on page 30).

Bill Kubiak, CSEP, chair of the Educational Conference & Awards Recognition Committee, explained that producing this cutting-edge event was no easy task! What appeared

to be effortless to the attendees required the combined efforts of many dedicated event professionals. The committee members started without a theme, then enlisted the help of their resources and allowed the program to take a natural course and elevate itself to the final product. With support and encouragement from the board, the chapter and sponsors, the committee was able to gather the necessary resources, intertwine concepts and think creatively.

“I firmly believe that the L.E.A.P. content may be the best ever constructed by the MPI Chicago Chapter,” stated Chrissy Ward, CAE, MPI-CAC president. “I am particularly pleased with the Chicago-centric community tone of the program. The addresses by leaders of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau

and McCormick Place were welcomed by our members and created a renewed enthusiasm for the Chicago meetings industry.”

L.E.A.P. was more than a series of presentations, awards and entertainment where the audience members are bystanders watching a spectacle. It actively engaged the audience, making them think and move! Kudos to MPI-CAC for jumping in with both feet, putting the attendees first and thinking outside of the box to create a fresh and innovative conference.

Meeting Professionals International Chicago Area Chapter Student Affairs Committee held its first annual Backpacks to Briefcases Seminar in conjunction with the Mocktails Reception in April. The turnout at this inaugural event by both by students and industry peers was excellent, with close to 30% of MPI-CAC’s student membership in attendance. The one-day dynamic seminar was filled with informative sessions and provided numerous occasions for students to network with their future peers. This seminar was specifically designed for MPI-CAC student members interested in the meeting planning industry and anyone wanting to learn new tips for establishing a career. Perhaps the most interesting program was “Step Away from the Computer! The Old School Approach to Networking,” presented by Jennifer Monti, founder, LHI Events. One of the attendees commented, “Jennifer Monti delivered the best speech. She came into the room full of positive energy. I think she really inspired people to want to be in the field.” Many attendees also said the

session led by Bill Host, CMM, CMP, “Your life in 10-12 Seconds,” was excellent; they learned a lot from him about résumés and cover letters. An underlying message of this program was that meeting planners should be interested and willing to help each other, which ultimately leads to opportunities for collaboration and enhancing the profession. The event could not have happened without the support of our generous sponsors and dedicated faculty members. During the Mocktails Reception, nine students were awarded MPI memberships.

The MPI-CAC Student Affairs Committee is planning a series of events in the upcoming year to connect with new student members and increase its membership base. We’ll keep you posted!
