Bartington Instruments has been awarded a contract by the European Space Agency to develop a tensor gradiometer for testing and investigating the magnetic cleanliness of satellites. The work will be carried out
in conjunction with the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the National Physical Laboratory.
The sensor will be used as part of the LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) project to measure low-frequency, low-amplitude variations of both the magnetic field and magnetic gradient within spacecraft.
Work is scheduled for completion in November 2011. Further information can be found on our website

Bartington Instruments’ sensors have been chosen for integration into a new magnetic linear barrier (MLB) independently or as part of a Multisensor Monitoring System (KRYL Mk3) for marine surveillance. The system has been created by CTM (Centrum Techniki Morskiej S.A., Poland), an R&D institute within the defence market.
The magnetic barrier (KRYL Mk3) offers a detection range up to 30m for disturbances such as drifting mines or divers. Our sensors have been selected because of their very low noise levels which enables detection of even minor changes in the magnetic field.
The barrier is ideal for mobile use and could easily be deployed around harbours, coastal installations, or critical assets at sea. This technology can be combined with other sensing solutions (e.g. sonar) to offer a complete surveillance system.

Submersible MagnetometerFollowing the launch of the Mag648 low-power surveillance magnetometer, a submersible version has now been introduced. With operation to a depth of 2,000m and noise levels of less than 10pTrms/√Hz at 1Hz, this magnetometer is ideal for use in harbour surveillance systems and for protecting strategic offshore assets. It is also suitable for incorporation in multi-sensor surveillance systems.

Following the appointment of our new agent in Bangladesh, we have sold a Magnetic Susceptibility System to the Geological Survey of Bangladesh. Our Technical Sales Consultant, Colin Jenkins, provided training in the use of this equipment. He also recently visited potential customers with our agents in India.
We are expanding our sales into Jordan, Pakistan and Africa, and a new agent has been appointed in Romania.
Book your agent training for OctoberOur next agent training session is scheduled for 4th-8th October 2010. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in attendingthis session.

BartingtonNewsRapid readings for archaeological survey
Bartington Instruments’ sensors are being used in a large-scale archaeological survey that is taking place along 75km of a new Italian motorway route linking Brescia, Bergamo and Milano.
Quad bike surveysThe route is being surveyed using a magnetic gradiometer system consisting of five Bartington Grad-01-1000L sensors connected to a logging device designed by
Geocarta (France – www.geocarta.net) and mounted on Geocarta’s cart pulled by a quad bike. The high performance of the sensors allows rapid collection of magnetic data which is integrated with GPS data within Geocarta’s logger driven by real time GPS software (GeocartaOffice). The survey can be carried out at speeds up to 20km/h, without loss of resolution.
The survey work in Italy is being undertaken by SOING Strutture & Ambiante (Italy – www.soing.it). Data interpretation and coordination is being performed by ATS (Archaeolandscapes Tech & Survey, Italy - www.atsenterprise.com).
When our new MS3 Magnetic Susceptibility Meter was introduced in November 2009, software was available for use with laboratory sensors. We are now developing new software so that the MS3 can be used with all sensors except the X/T system. A rugged Trimble® data logger can be provided if required.
The new software, which has been launched at EGU 2010, will operate with Windows CE® (Mobile) loggers – including hand-held computers and mobile phones with USB host capability. It will also enable integration with GPS data, providing an enhanced magnetic susceptibility measurement capability in the field.

Defending divers against mines To avoid accidentally triggering underwater mines, military diving requires stringent control of the magnetic signature of the diver’s equipment. Bartington sensors have been selected for this application due to their very low noise levels.
Our Mag-03 sensors can be used independently or configured as a gradiometer in this application. Measurements can also be taken in conjunction with our data acquisition systems. Tests are carried out with the diver onshore, and subsequently in-situ, using a magnetic range.
The in-situ range is a multi-sensor deployable system, and usually mimics the shape of mines, allowing accurate determination of the signature of a diver in field conditions.

New Signal Conditioning Unitand Power Supply Unit Two new products have been added to the Bartington Instruments range. The new SCU1 will provide power and signal conditioning of outputs from most Bartington three-axis magnetometers.
The new PSU1 will provide power and filtering for most Bartington three-axis magnetometers. A version with a read-out from the three axes will also be available.
