This has been a very active year for ALPFA and as our annual convention

approaches, I reflect on what has been another successful year for ALPFA.

We began the year with great excitement as our first year with the ALPFA Institute.

The ALPFA Institute, in partnership with the University of Arkansas Sam Walton

College of Business, will help ALPFA expand its reach and deliver on its mission of

building Latino business leaders. With ALPFA's mission as its foundation, the ALPFA

Institute has three centers through which it will conduct research and develop latino

talent into the leaders that we need in today’s rapidly changing business

environment. Those centers are the Center for Global Leadership, the Center for

Women and the Center of Diversity and Inclusion. This partnership is just another example of how we at ALPFA are

being innovative about how we get things done and strategic about how we work with our partners.

This year also marks the ten-year anniversary of the Women of ALPFA Program which was founded by four women

leaders, and is now our most successful program to date. We launched a 10-city tour focused on the strong

contributions of women in business. The series, called Strong From the Inside Out: Building Latina Leaders, featured

motivational speakers, break out sessions, and an opportunity to get inspired on both a professional and personal

level.

This year at the 2012 annual convention we will be Shining a Light on 40 Years of Latino Leadership. and we will

reflect, acknowledge and celebrate 40 years of success. ALPFA came to be because of the vision and courage of a

few Latino leaders four decades ago. ALPFA’s growth and its impact on the Latino and business community since

then, has been accomplished because of the drive, leadership and commitment of those that have followed. The 2012

annual convention also brings us back to the “City of Lights”, Las Vegas, Nevada. This convention, like all of the ones

before it, will provide our members with

the opportunity to develop their

leadership skills, expand their network

and grow professionally. At the career

fair, you will have the opportunity to

engage with companies that are

interested in meeting you and are in

search of leaders that will help shape

the future tf their organizations. It is not

too late to register and I encourage all

of our members to attend. Not only is it

a great development opportunity but a

fantastic experience.

I want to congratulate all of our

graduating ALPFA student members for

their academic accomplishments. To all

of our student members, take time this

summer to connect with professional

ALPFA membership. Discuss your

experiences and aspirations and ask

them to be your mentors. Our

professional membership welcomes

this opportunity.

On behalf of the National Board of

Directors, thank you for your continued

support of ALPFA. See you at the

convention!

With our 2012 National Convention only weeks away, I want to lead off by

thanking all of our professional and student members as well as our

corporate partners who have already committed to participate and have

registered. Without doubt, this is shaping up to be our largest convention

ever with members and sponsors coming in from every region of the U.S. I

am especially proud to invite the newest members of our family, the members

from our 40th chapter in Omaha, Nebraska who are officially participating in

the National Convention for the 1st time.

I cannot stress to you enough what a momentous event this year’s convention will be. Shining the Light on 40

Years of Latino Leadership is a fitting theme and we will be commemorating many achievements and

benchmarks throughout. Not only are we celebrating our 40th Anniversary but we are also proud to

acknowledge that the 2012 National Convention is also our 40th Convention. Since our founding in 1972,

ALPFA has always held an annual convention for its

members. When you consider that our founding members

who were building the first professional association for

Latino CPAs had the foresight in Year One to envision an

annual event designed to offer professional development,

leadership building and camaraderie among our members

and their families, I think you will agree with me that this is

a rather significant accomplishment.

Over the years, the convention has grown exponentially not

only in terms of attendees and sponsors but also in terms of

its program offerings. Imagine what those early conventions

were like before ALPFA invited students to participate. Students currently comprise 30% of the total

convention attendance and with this year’s anticipated roster of participating graduate schools growing, we see

no shortage of opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to build their professional

network and enhance their leadership skills.

As you know, we are also commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Women of ALPFA program this year.

Many of you have heard me share the story of how the Women of ALPFA program was created by a small but

powerful, visionary cadre of Latinas at our 2002 Convention in Orlando. Latinas have always been welcome to

attend and participate in all ALPFA conventions but the 2002 convention was the 1st time programming from

a Latina perspective for a Latina audience was part of our convention. We will acknowledge the contributions

made during our 1st decade of building Latina Leadership on August 13th. The creation of the Women of ALPFA

program has always been and continues to be one of my proudest Convention moments and without exception

one of our most noteworthy enhancements to ALPFA’s national programming.

Each year, ALPFA raises the bar on the caliber of its Conventions—I assure you this one will be the best one

yet featuring dynamic speakers, engaging workshops, the allure of Vegas and a few surprises in honor of our

40th Anniversary and continued successes. I look forward to seeing you there!

Through this partnership with the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA) each association will support

each other in a number of ways, including providing 250 free memberships to the respective organization; cross-

promoting networking and educational opportunities; and participating at the annual conference of the other

organization.

“The American Society of Women Accountants is excited about the opportunities that this new alliance partnership brings to

members of both ASWA and ALPFA,” said Lee Lowery, ASWA Executive Director. “ASWA’s membership is already very diverse in

terms of our members’ experience and expertise, but the new relationship with ALPFA opens up doors to new relationships and

insight that our members can only benefit from.”

Prior to the formation of this alliance, ALPFA served as a contributor to ASWA’s Special Report on Diversity, to be released in June.

After this initial collaboration, both organizations’ leaders realized a deeper relationship would be beneficial for both ASWA and

ALPFA.

”ALPFA recognizes the value of partnering with professional organizations, such as ASWA that value diversity and contribute to the

mission of building Latina business leaders. ALPFA continually works to provide our members with additional networking and

educational resources to enhance their professional careers,” said Pamela Ravare-Jones, ALPFA Chief Operating Officer.

About the American Society of Women Accountants (ASWA): Founded in 1938, ASWA provides women in accounting and

finance the leadership, education and networking opportunities needed to achieve their career goals. More than seventy years later,

ASWA is still the only organization that solely represents the interest of women in the entire accounting and finance community. The

organization’s mission is to enable women in all accounting and related fields to achieve their full personal, professional and economic

potential and to contribute to the future development of their profession. Visit www.aswa.org for more information.

ALPFA Officially Launches It’s 40th Chapter, Nebraska and Mayor Proclaims “ALPFA Day”

May 15, 2012, Omaha, Nebraska – Mayor Jim Suttle proclaimed May 15th as ALPFA Day to commemorate the launching of

Families have a lot that they’re thinking and worrying about. From managing finances, college planning for kids, taking care of

parents and other family members to trying to prepare for their own retirement there is a lot for families to worry about.

Findings from Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company’s (MassMutual) 2011 nationwide study State of the American Family revealed that

Hispanic families are concerned about their finances and are more likely to be part of the Sandwich Generation – those who are taking care of both

children and parents while trying to take care of their own financial needs.

The first step in doing so is the think through what’s important to you, your family, and your financial goals. Here are a few questions to consider as

you get started:

• What’s important? College savings? Retirement planning? Consider this question alone or with family members. Understanding this question will help

you create a framework to build your financial strategy around.

• Who depends on me today and tomorrow? Spouses and children are commonly thoughts of as the most obvious dependents, but there may

be others – parents, in-laws, siblings.

• Who helps me provide for my dependents now? Consider who provides your family with financial and non-financial but invaluable support. Are

there grandparents who provide childcare, for example?

• Where do I want to be in 10 or 20 years? What goals have you set for yourself and where you want to be?

Once you have a sense for where you want to be and what you want to do, consider working with a financial professional to help create a custom

strategy for your financial goals. MassMutual has been helping customers with their financial needs for over 160 years. Visit massmutual.com or

• Read the conference agenda thoroughly, and select the sessions that will be most likely to improve your skills. Stay awayfrom the seminars you could almost teach yourself, and "stretch" by hearing about topics you have not mastered.

• Ask a professional colleague to become your conference buddy, so you can share what you learn. This collaboration willbring special benefits when you talk about presentations that only one of you attended.

• Stay for the entire conference. You never know what good information you might miss by arriving late or leaving early.

• Stay at the conference's designated hotel. You need to be where you can enlarge your network most effectively.

• When you attend conference parties, realize that potential employers, clients or business partners might observe your behavior. You are not really "off duty."

• Take plenty of business cards, to help new acquaintances remember you.

• Tactfully collect as many business cards as you can, so you can follow up with post cards, E-mails, phone calls and appointments.

• Become an active participant, asking questions and making comments. The topics will take on new life for you.

• Meet and thank everyone who served on the conference planning committee. They deserve your compliments. And when you thank them, you will definitelystand out as one of the few who did.

Hiring the right job candidate can be a challenging andtime-consuming proposition. It’s also a high-stakesgame. Choosing the wrong accounting or financeprofessional can lead to significant losses of companytime, resources and money when things don’t pan out.

Obviously, it behooves you to avoid bad-hire headaches. Following are ways

to increase the odds that the applicants you bring aboard prove to be smart

selections:

Know the Problems to Watch For

Robert Half asked more than 1,400 chief financial officers to name the top

reasons — aside from performance problems — why new hires don’t work

out. More than one-third (36 percent) of the executives surveyed cited

“mismatched skill set” as the leading cause of failed hires. Other factors

included “unclear performance expectations” (30 percent), “personality

conflicts” (17 percent) and “failure to fit into the corporate culture” (14

percent). Keeping these issues in mind during each phase of the hiring

process — from crafting the job ad to checking references — can greatly

improve your results.

Draft the Right Job Description

A good hire begins with an accurate, up-to-date job description. Positions

change and evolve. As such, don’t simply recycle the employment ad you used

last time. Re-examine the role and identify what the job will require now and

in the near future. Assess your team’s mix of strengths and weaknesses, and

look for opportunities to fill skills and knowledge gaps.

Don’t Rush

The urge to quickly fill a position is understandable, especially if a backlog of

work immediately starts to grow, but haste makes waste. Remember that

you’re not just filling a desk, you’re adding a permanent staff member who

needs to add real value over the long haul. Finding that individual can take

time and attention.

When you think you’ve found the ideal candidate, don’t forgo the reference

check. Verifying qualifications and claims with former supervisors and

colleagues is critical. No matter how packed your schedule, don’t delegate

this important task. You can learn a great deal not only from what a reference

says but also from how they say it. For example, while legal concerns might

deter former employers from making negative comments, a lack of

enthusiasm can be telling.

Last but not least, explore all your options. You might look at temporary-to-

hire arrangements. Connecting with a specialized staffing firm and bringing in

talented interim professionals on an as-needed basis could be the right

solution for you.

Moreover, this staffing model allows you to directly observe the prospective

employee’s performance in the position before extending an offer. This

approach minimizes hiring mistakes, giving both you and the would-be

employee an opportunity to see if you’ve found a good fit.

When ALPFA New York leadership began to develop their approach with regards to

veterans they turned to their VP of Marketing, Ryan Enriquez, who is a former Sergeant

of the United States Marine Corps and currently a Project Manager at JPMorgan Chase

& Co. Ryan’s insight helped identified several key stakeholders who have a vested interest

in improving employment opportunities for veterans. On May 2nd, ALPFA NY partnered

with Barclays to host its inaugural veteran’s event which united veterans, veteran affinity

leaders, external veteran organizations, GI Bill Fund Administrators, and HR professionals.

Keynote speaker Theodore Roosevelt IV, Managing Director - Investment Banking at

Barclays and U.S. Navy veteran, spoke to the fact that veterans possess the characteristics

that employers seek, such as a strong work ethic, leadership, dependability and being a

team player. “It is no secret companies should be courting our military men and women.”

The distinguished panel was led by Fenton Reese, Ret. Sergeant Major, who asked “What

is deterring veteran employment into Corporate America?” One of the greatest

challenges veterans encounter is mastering a resume by translating military skills to a

civilian job experience. Kenneth Roldan, the first Hispanic CEO of a national executive

search firm, added that “people do not hire paper they hire people.” He spoke of the

need to educate the corporate mindset that many HR executives have when it comes to

hiring and retaining vets. He also suggested leveraging and engaging support networks

and mentoring programs dedicated to helping veterans and their families’ transition into

civilian careers. Carlos Recalde - Senior Director of Enterprise Architecture at Barclays,

spoke of the company’s three specific objectives: (1) raising awareness for vets; (2)

employment of vets and their family; and (3) supporting veterans’ initiatives through

philanthropy.

This event highlighted the ability of ALPFA to unify interested parties in its mission of creating opportunities, adding value, and building relationships, as well

as provided valuable insight as to the focus of ALPFA NY’s future Veterans Symposium.

On Saturday May 19th the ALPFA Seattle Chapter celebrated its 7th Annual Gala with the theme: “Global

Leadership: Opportunity in Adversity.” The evening was aimed to celebrate the chapter’s accomplishments

over the last year, and recognize the contributions of local leaders, volunteers and loyal corporate partners.

Lead Corporate Partner, Ernst & Young hosted the event, which featured a keynote address by Jim Turley,

Chairman & CEO of E&Y.

Each year, the Seattle Chapter highlights a different Latino culture at the gala. This year was no different, as

the gala celebrated the Colombian culture through music, folklore dance and delicious food native to the

country.

The event's Master of Ceremonies, Juan Roberto Job welcomed guests with humor and laughter. Hector V.

Perez, ALPFA National President provided the night's welcome address, discussing the need for companies

to recognize the multicultural shift occurring in the U.S. There is no doubt that America is changing and

shifting into a more multicultural country. The U.S. is undergoing a shift from one language to two, a shift

from exclusion to inclusion, changing borders to bridges. Marketers should no longer consider the Hispanic

market as a “niche.” Instead, it should be considered as part of the mainstream.

The importance of demographics was also emphasized by our guest speaker of the evening; Mr. James S.

Turley, Chairman and CEO of Ernst & Young. Mr. Turley emphasized the significant - yet sometimes

overlooked- impact that changes in demographics can have in the economy. It was especially interesting to

hear how global demographics have changed in the last twelve years. As a student, hearing Mr. Turley’s words

of knowledge was definitely one of the highlights of the evening.

As the evening progressed, awards were presented to The Boeing Company, for Outstanding Partner; Mr. Ken Bouyer, for Champion of the Year; Mr. Quinn

Smith, for Professional Member of the Year; and Ms. Ivette Aguilera for Student Member of the Year.

As a student, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ALPFA Professional Chapter and the event’s sponsors for hosting such an incredible event.

From a student’s perspective ALPFA’s Annual Gala is a unique experience to network and interact with some of the most successful professionals in the Seattle

area. It was especially valuable to have had the opportunity to be selected as a Student VIP and sit with a corporate partner. This provided me with the

opportunity to network one-on-one with a prestigious local employer.

Overall, the ALPFA Gala is not only an excuse to dress up but more important

it is an opportunity for members of the Seattle business community to share

their knowledge and expertise with fellow professionals and college students.

It was an evening in which the Latino culture shined over Seattle more than

ever.

Women of ALPFA, in partnership with Goldman Sachs, held the 6th Annual Latina

Summit entitled, “Building Latina Leaders: Strong From the Inside Out” on May 16,

as part of the National 10-City tour sponsored by Deliotte

The purpose of the Latina Summit is to build stronger Latina Leaders by tapping into

their inner passions and finding a balance that will enrich, energize, and inspire them

as well as others. The event focused on career enhancement for Latina women and

business leaders by providing insights to inspire and encourage them to achieve their

goals. The gathering presented remarkable workshops, which included “Create a Life

You Love” presented by Karissa Azonabor of Lululemon, “The 10Ls of Leadership”

presented by Kaplan Mobray, Best-Selling Author, Motivational Speaker and Career

Consultant, and “Building a Better You” presented by a panel which included Peg

Bain, of Center for Training, Benson-Henry Institute for the Mind Body Medicine;

Yvonne Castañeda of The Sport Club LA/Boston, Nicole Taveras of Behavioral

Nutrition, Inc., Maria T. Vivaldi of the Corrigan Women’s Heart Health Program, Massachusetts General Hospital Heart Center, and moderated by Marisela

Marrero of North Shore Medical Center.

Following the workshops, a roundtable discussion was led by exceptional business women who shared their personal

testimony to inspire other women to achieve their professional and personal goals. They talked about how women can

unleash their genuine leadership potential by recognizing the leader within them, and leveraging their particular style to

strengthen their effectiveness as leaders. The panel consisted of a team of noteworthy business leaders, including Marta

Amieva of Fidelity Management & Research Company, Rebecca Chasen of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services, Melanie

Foley of Liberty Mutual Group, Valerie Mosley of Wellington Management Company, and Yvonne Garcia of Liberty

Mutual’s Agency Corp. as moderator.

The Latina Summit brought together close to five hundred professionals from different backgrounds and career fields

from the Greater Boston area. Following the presentations was a networking reception in which the participants were

able to meet other professionals, make new connections, and learn more about Latina Women Leadership. The event

was a complete success due to the enthusiastic participation of great speakers and attendees.

ALPFAWOMEN OF

The 7th annual Women of ALPFA event themed “Building Latina Leaders:

Strong from the Inside Out" took hold at the New Jersey Performing Arts

Center. Elegantly structured on the outside and royally designed on the inside,

NJPAC has hosted a number of stars including the likes of Bob Dylan, Jerry

Seinfield, Audra McDonald, Yo-Yo Ma, and many more since it’s debut in 1997.

On May 9th, 2012 there were no scheduled performances or routines on the

NJPAC calendar, however, one can find upon entering the Center that evening

a bevy of stars. These stars were of a different variety. A variety that had

overcome obstacles, defied stereotypes, and stomped on the status quo. They

were Latina Leaders in business.

Emcee extraordinaire Jack Santiago from the Disney Institute made his way

from Orlando to lead an insightful panel discussion with Yanela Frias of

Prudential, Bellaria Jaramillo of MetLife, and Nellie Pou, New Jersey State

Senator to an over-capacity crowd who were eager to take note on how these women made it to where they are today. They spoke on their personal stories

as they chronicled their rise up the corporate and political ladder to become leaders in their respective industries. As informative as their advices were the

superstar of the evening was just as inspiring and certainly entertaining. Maria Marin, host of her own radio show and author of several top-selling books,

lit up the room with a zest and genuine enthusiasm that seemed to match that of the audience. Maria’s sense of humor, active engagement with the audience,

and colorful zingers had the audience fully attentive and entertained. She did, however, get down to business. Maria spoke on some of the barriers women face

in advancing on the leadership route in their industries. What was interesting, though, was the barriers she spoke of were not external but rather internal.

Self-made barriers Latina women seem to create for themselves without even knowing it. According to Maria and her research, Latina women’s number one

excuse for not taking the “next step” was that it just never seemed to be the right time; that the time will soon be right just not right at that moment. She

emphasized seizing opportunity, knowing self-worth, and most emphatically to “expect more, demand more and you will get more.”

In one of the more inspiring moments of that evening, in a friendly exchange, a 58 year old woman grabbed the microphone from Maria and exclaimed to the

audience that she was working full-time and attending school full-time going for her degree, this right after Maria said that it is never too late to do what you

want. The audience erupted in cheers. An appropriate ending to an evening that some described as “inspiring” and just as equally vital for the young, aspiring

Latinas in the audience. An event such as this solidifies ALPFA’s standing in the Latino Leadership realm as first-in-class and a cultivator of future leaders to

which someday we can call our own stars.

On Friday, March 23rd, ALPFA Hartford hosted its 5th Annual Women of ALPFA Summit. In recognition

of 10 years of Women of ALPFA, the Hartford Chapter increased the scope of the event to include both

a VIP breakfast and women’s fair and there were also a series of mini presentations from sponsoring

organizations. This year’s theme for ALPFA Hartford was “Breaking Barriers to Achieve Success” , and

for this anniversary event, the chapter partnered with Host Sponsors Prudential and State Farm, Gold

sponsor Travelers, Silver sponsor Aetna and Bronze sponsors Mass Mutual and UnitedHealth Group.

This year’s event drew over 150 members and guests, both professionals and students alike.

ALPFA Hartford is one of the leading organizations providing programs with women initiatives in the

area and has become a symbol of providing Hispanic women leadership in the community.

The WOA program was kicked off with a VIP Breakfast, hosted by Travelers, and then opened with a brand new event, the Women’s Fair, which consisted of

vendors providing products and services related to health, education and fashion.

The lunch program was opened by the Chapter President, Stefanie Diaz, and followed by National

Women of ALPFA CAB Member, Kaplan Mobray, who shared a heart-felt story about a woman leader, a

Latina mother, and her daughter. The story went on to speak about the leadership and principles the

mother had instilled in her daughter by being a strong and driven woman.

Invited speaker Joan Bozek, Sr. Vice President, Investment Products, Prudential Retirement, provided an

inspiring presentation on how ALPFA is breaking ground by inviting women to excel in finance and

accounting. Joan also explained by facing challenges, you break barriers and grow stronger each day. She

then provided 5 Rules to Live By:

• Make time for yourself

• Make time for your soul and spiritual self

• Make time for significant other

• Make time for your family

• Make time for your career

She concluded with “Take charge of your life, take charge of your career, and take charge….”Tamika

Pettway, Sales and Recruiting Professional, State Farm, kicked off her opening remarks by engaging the

audience in a State Farm cheer and shared her excitement with the theme of Women Breaking Barriers

to Achieve Success. Tamika shared her story with State Farm and why she's excited to be part of an

organization that supports women leaders.

After the Lunch Program, attendees had two concurrent sessions to choose from: Success without

Boundaries: Strategies for Women in Leadership (hosted by Prudential) and Don't Take It Personally: Tips

to Conquering Cross-Cultural and Status Barriers (Panel speakers from Aetna, State Farm & Travelers

with a the moderator from Albertus Magnus College). The workshops tackled career challenges, and

crossing over the cultural/status barriers that exist today in corporate America.

In continuation of ALPFA’s annual Regional Student Symposiums, we were pleased to host this year’s remaining student

symposiums in Miami (Southern Region), Los Angeles (Western Region), and Dallas (Central Region). The theme of the

symposiums was “Leveraging Preparation as a Pathway to Success: Developing the Professional Business Leader in You.”

As a foundation of ALPFA student programming for the fourth year in a row, the Regional Student Symposiums are

designed to connect highly motivated and successful student leaders in various regions across the nation with sponsors

and recruiters in accounting, finance, and other business-related fields. Students are provided the opportunity to attend

a leadership panel with top executive business leaders, followed by a series of student workshops designed to provide

career-enhancing skills and knowledge, a networking luncheon with a keynote speaker, and a career fair. A total of over

350 combined students attended the events, each gaining the valuable opportunity to network with participating sponsors, which included: Arcon Group,

Becker CPA Review, Bell Curves, California State University Los Angeles Accounting Department, Chase, Chick-Fil-A, CIA, Deloitte, Dow Chemical, E&Y,

FDIC, Goldman Sachs, HACU, JP Morgan Chase, KPMG, Mass Mutual, McGladrey, Metlife, Management Leadership for Tomorrow, New York Life, North

Texas Collegiate Consortium, NY Life, Prudential, PwC, Robert Half, Singer Lewak, Target, The PhD Project, UBS, UCLA Riordan Program, Walden

University, and Walt Disney.

Students in attendance often take advantage of the symposium as an opportunity to gain early exposure to their career interests, as well as gaining

professional and academic guidance and support through their networking experiences. “It was refreshing to see so many young adults enthusiastic about

their professional growth,” said Kevin Zamora, president of the Florida International University ALPFA student chapter. He also expressed his pride in

seeing so many motivated students coming together with a desire to become the future leaders of major corporations. ALPFA student members can

likewise use the symposiums to connect with other students and learn more about the “ALPFA experience” on other college campuses, gaining insight

and helpful advice on programs and events they can promote at each of their respective student chapters.

Among the many benefits students gain from their professional and leadership development in ALPFA programs, students often cite the helpful advice

they attain from guest speakers and the business professionals they

network with. Christopher, a student at Cal State Fullerton, described

one of the guest speakers as being inspirational. “I believe he underlined

the importance of the biggest obstacle in career searching, which is

learning to overcome setbacks. This topic is hard to discuss because it’s

really a personal thing that everyone knows but is difficult to practice.

Still, I think it’s a topic that is on everyone’s mind so the way ALPFA chose

to address it was appropriate,” he said.

ALPFA strives to provide all its student members with experiences such

as those shared by Christopher and Kevin. We are excited about the

continued success of the Regional Student Symposiums and are

extremely thankful to ALPFA Miami, ALPFA Los Angeles, and ALPFA

Dallas for their help in coordinating the events with ALPFA National. A

special thank you also goes out to the ALPFA student chapters at Florida

International University and Cal State LA for hosting the symposiums on

their campuses, in addition to their instrumental participation in the

planning process. It is through this continued collaboration with

supportive sponsors and engaged students that the ALPFA Regional

Student Symposiums will continue to impact the Latino community and

achieve success for ALPFA.

This year’s South Regional Symposium took place in Miami, Florida at Florida International University’s School of International Public

Affairs state-of-the-art facility. Approximately 100 students from various universities including: Georgia State University, University of Florida,

University of Central Florida, University of South Florida, University of Miami, and

Florida International University. The event was filled with leadership building seminars,

numerous job opportunities available to the students via an on campus career fair, and

a full day of networking with business executives who were more than willing to

answer questions and provide advice for professional growth to the students. After the

workshops and lunch, a career fair with companies such as KPMG, McGladrey, Central

Intelligence Agency and Prudential allowed the students to submit their resumes and

connect with recruiters from these various companies. The students left feeling

accomplished and ready to take on the business world. Kevin Zamora, President of the

hosting university ALPFA FIU, stated that, “It was refreshing to see so many young

adults enthusiastic about their professional growth. It’s not often that you find a room

full of such motivated students coming together with the desire to become the future

leaders of major corporations.”

In addition, the opportunity to interact with ALPFA students from other universities throughout the region allowed them to build relationships that would

further develop through their involvement within ALPFA. Many student chapters enjoyed the beautiful city of Miami once the event culminated through a

dinner in Miami Beach and dancing the night away in Downtown Miami.

Los Angeles, CA April 14, 2012 – Students from all over southern California and beyond gathered at

California State University, Los Angeles for ALPFA LA's regional symposium. They came from places as far

as the University of Redlands to San Diego State University and even Golden Gate University! These

students take their careers seriously and understand that it takes more than a good GPA to land their dream

job. They arrived early on a Saturday morning and devoted their day to developing their professional skills

and building relationships with their peers and professionals. With comments like “ALPFA did an amazing

job accommodating students and professionals alike. The symposium was an excellent opportunity for

networking and education, and I would love to attend similar events in the future” from Mark Levine, it is

no wonder that some students traveled so far to attend this event.

Overall, students felt that they gained valuable knowledge and encouraging insight through the variety of

speakers, panelists, presenters, and exhibitors at the career fair. The program included a panel of four

professionals from diverse backgrounds with ALPFA COO Pamela Ravare-Jones moderating. Because of the

diversity of the panel, every student was able to find a nugget of inspiration that would enable to pursue their career goals. When asked what he thought about the

symposium, Christopher Huang, from Cal State Fullerton, replied, “the second guest speaker was very inspirational, and I believe he underlined the importance of

the biggest obstacle in career searching, which is learning to overcome setbacks. This topic is hard to discuss

because it's really a personal thing that everyone knows but is difficult to practice.” For students that were new

to organizations such as ALPFA, they felt that “it was a wake up call” as David Tran from Cal State LA put it.

The workshops provided students with more specific insight about how to develop their personal brand,

choosing which path in the accounting field to take, and how to land a job in the tough economy. The workshops

were not just about business, students also had fun while they were learning and networking. The presenters

were excited about the information and students picked up on it. Their presentations drew laughs from the

attendees. Ivette Campos, a Cal State LA student, stated, “I found it very helpful especially the Robert Half

workshop, which was very entertaining.”

While at the symposium, I got many more thanks and great comments about a successful event and how much

attendees, both students and professionals, were able to take away from the event. This is just one example of

the great events that ALPFA puts on.

The primary reasons for pursuing a higher degree may seem obvious: the desire to further advance my education, the aspiration to expand

my professional and personal networks, and the hopes of becoming a better person overall. While these reasons have propelled me

towards the completion of the MBA program, granted to me through one of the

first ALPFA Professional Leadership Scholarships in 2010, I have a much deeper

personal reason – a promise I made to my parents almost twenty years ago. This

little known promise has been the real motivation behind completing this

degree.

In just a few weeks, I will finish earning my MBA, completing an amazing journey

that began over twenty one months ago. My parents will be here to celebrate

this accomplishment. Their visit to Miami will give me the opportunity to relish

the fact that I have fulfilled the promise not only to better myself as an individual

but also fulfilled my promise to them to earn this degree. I hope that in fulfilling

my promise to them, my parents will be proud of me.

Even as the road I have taken to complete this MBA program comes to an end,

a new path opens before me. I am excited to embark on that path, filled with

its new set of challenges but associated with higher rewards. I now have new

knowledge, experiences, and skills developed throughout this program to serve

as guides on this new path.

Thanks to both ALPFA and the University of Phoenix for providing me the

opportunity to not only earn my degree but also to deliver on a promise. A new

journey begins soon.

ALPFA is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the 2nd year of our Graduate Expansion in 2012. As part of our annual convention in Vegas, we are pleased to include

our Graduate partners in three exciting events. The Graduate Admissions panel will take place on Monday - August 13th comprising panelist from USC, Wake

Forest University, University of Arkansas, Bell Curves, and Dell Corporation. The theme of this workshop is the Pursuit of a Graduate degree – Guidance for the

Journey (Preparation, Application, Admissions, and Job Placement).

Secondly, USC-Leventhal School of Accounting and ALPFA will host a University Reception on Tuesday – August 14th featuring the Dean of USC for a keynote

address along with a distinguished panel of CEO’s, Executives, and Latino Professors. We will highlight, The Landscape of Advanced Education- Recognizing the

Value of Higher Education and the Opportunity to Set Yourself apart as a business professional. There will be time for networking with convention VIP’s, connecting

with key university representatives from leading graduate universities and strategic alliance partners, and establishing dialogues with ALPFA leaders who have

obtained a graduate degree.

Finally, ALPFA students and professionals can take advantage of the Career Fair & University Expo Co-sponsored by Walden University on Wednesday – August

15th and Life Technologies. Our convention attendees will have the opportunity to speak directly one-on-one with our University partners to learn more about

graduate programs and scholarships. Don’t miss the chance to learn more about higher education and the personal and financial rewards it can yield.

ALPFA GRADUATE RESOURCES

After moving to the Boston area from the Dominican Republic in 1989 not speaking a word of English, I was forced to learn the language

quickly to assimilate and achieve my academic goals. I developed a love for languages and attended Middlebury College, which has one of the

country’s most prestigious language programs, where I double majored in French and Italian. During my undergraduate studies, I spent a

semester respectively in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Florence, Italy; and Paris, France. Upon graduation I decided to use my languages to pursue

an international development career and served in the Peace Corps in South Africa for almost three years. While in South Africa I decided a

graduate degree would help me stand out among the many qualified people in the field and was accepted at John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies

(SAIS) in Washington D.C.

However, after further consideration, I decided that pursuing an MBA instead of a Masters in International Development would “open more doors” in my career as I

could use the management skills acquired both in the not-for-profit and private sectors. I enrolled at Boston University’s evening MBA program in 2003 and completed

my part-time MBA in 2006, while leading the fundraising department of a local Boys & Girls Club. In 2006, I indeed transitioned to the private sector and started working

at Fidelity Investments in Boston. It was also during this time that I first learned about ALPFA and became an active member and Board member of the Boston Chapter.

My MBA education helped me excel both in my career and leadership role within the ALPFA Boston Board. One of the key components of my MBA education was

working as a team with groups of classmates of different backgrounds, industries, strengths and weaknesses. We learned to put aside differences and leverage our

collective strengths to accomplish a common goal.

After five years in the private sector, I am now privileged to lead the ALPFA Boston Chapter as its Executive Director. My role requires managing one of ALPFA’s largest

chapters in regards to membership and the high expectations of the 45+ corporate partners that invest in our organization and that have diverse and sometimes

competing demands for return on their investment. I help our chapter successfully execute on key metrics including membership growth, retention and engagement;

growth and retention of corporate partnerships; financial management; quality programming; and most importantly ensuring we deliver great value to our members,

corporate partners and community. My MBA education played a key role in preparing me to lead a great ALPFA Chapter such as Boston.
