e know there is no such thing as the average bonsai enthusiast! We come in all shapes and sizes, ages, waistlines; we come with various amounts of training, experience, participation and incentives to be engaged as bonsai enthusiasts. For some of us, this is a casual hobby, while to others, a time respected botanical tradition of the ages, which respects knowledge, age, character and experience.
Some of you are naturally happy people and some of you need to be medicated and have therapy. Some of you are technically profi cient, active social media-ists, while other use their computers as paperweights.
I think I have made my point! However, There is a different bonsai activity for each and everyone of you.
As BSF strives to promote bonsai activities throughout the state, we sometimes struggle to fi nd the right balance to be relevant to all BSF bonsai participants without annoying or disengaging any other
group of people as we plan and pro-mote our activities.
Which brings me to our immi-nent Orlando Convention, “A Learning Experience.” By the time you read this, you certainly will have heard the opinions about it. The evolution of an idea from a thought to an actual
event requires the efforts of many people willing to take chances on something new and accepting the risk of criticism associated with change. “A Learning Experience” is a themed convention specifi cally tailored to learn about the fi ne

training, exeexperienenncce, partici
points of exhibit setup and the art of bonsai display. Ryan Neil was an extraordinary talent from last year’s convention; Peter Warren and Kora Dalager are recognized and respected throughout the country. We are fortunate to have them with us in a single event.
What an incredible opportunity this convention represents to everyone to participate in some-thing special with some old and new talents to Florida. I know I am looking forward to this conven-tion with great anticipation, and my sincere thanks to the talented group of people who planned and executed this event. Everyone should be aware of what a talented board of directors you have who represent you in an extraordinary manner as well as the integrity of the BSF organization.
Over the past year, we have made great improvements to our com-munications network and our ability to reach out to our member-ship. We have an active website; have mastered the e-mail blasts for everything from club events to
upcoming speakers and our con-vention down to the point where we have the ability to provide timely advertising for our conven-tion vendors.
In the past I have received com-plains about our inability to communicate effectively with you; many of you never received BSF information. Therefore, I am especially amused at a recent e-mail in which a person informed me that they liked it better when BSF couldn’t fi nd them and that they were putting us in their spam fi lter with the other garbage so they wouldn’t receive any more of our communications! Some days you just can’t win for trying, but I am happy to see we have improved our communications system (in both directions)!
Be well, enjoy bonsai and stay up to your armpits in fertilizer!

ow! Can you believe that the 2012 BSF conven- tion is almost here. Another year is gone and we are all sprinting to yet another convention event. This year’s annual gathering should be fantastic. Our headliners are all excited about their presentations and we are all geared up to go. It will be great to see this convention and enjoy the fruit of our solid year’s worth of work. The board has worked very diligently to bring our members one of the fi nest events Florida has seen in years. I hope you will be there to witness this one! If not, stay tuned to the next magazine which will be an overview of the event.
And will it all end for us then? No way, two weeks later will fi nd many of us off to Rochester, New York and the Third U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition. If the show is anything like the last it is not to be missed. There are more details in this issue of Florida Bonsai.
Also in this issue is a must read by Rosemarie Voekler on wound closure and the healing process in trees.
Another feature is on the recent introduction of Puerto Rico’s
Escambron. This tropical tree is a fan-tastic piece of bonsai material. It is fast growing and quickly develops into very nice bonsai specimen. We are lucky enough this year to have col-lected Escambron
presented by Michael Feduccia in a workshop for our members. If you don’t have one of these in your collection, don’t miss out.
I don’t know about you, but this year has been the worst year for spider mites. We found a great article with lots of insight into
this common pest. Be sure to check it out and look for the handy pesticide chart on page 26 on how to control spider mites in your yard.
The highlight of this issue is our photo gallery of the bonsai dis-play at Disney’s Epcot. The trees are fantastic and the new display areas at the Japan pavilion really show off the trees to their best. If you haven’t had a chance to get to Epcot this year, you will see what you’ve missed. BSF is fortunate to have this long standing relation-ship with the folks at Disney. The staff is wonderful and the care they provide for our trees while on exhibit is extraordinary. Of course, it goes without saying that Paul Pikel, our Epcot chair-person, and his merry band of vol-unteers go above and beyond with their weekly updates and reports. This type of communication alle-viates any worries that the owners could possibly have about their prized bonsai possessions. After all our bonsai take more care and attention than some of our chil-dren or pets!
Finally, in this issue we get down to the nuts and bolts that keep this society running. It is our fi nancial statement as submitted by the BSF Treasurer.
I know fi nancial statements are not the most fascinating read, but everyone should pay attention to where we are as an organization and how we are faring in these economic times. As you can see we are holding our own and while we did suffer a bit of a loss last year, we are forging ahead and presenting the best possible pro-gramming to our membership.
I hope you all enjoy this issue and look forward to the next Autumn (already!?) issue. 2012...half gone already, or is it...6 more exciting months to go! You decide.

BSF 1st Photography Competition
The photo contest rules can be found on the Bonsai-BSF.com website and the deadline is April 30, 2012. Since this is the fi rst year we really aren’t sure what to expect, however usually when that is the case we are gen-erally pleasantly surprised. The rewards for the photographers are pretty substantial as well, with a fully paid registration for the 2012 Bonsai Convention. Depending on the number of
entries, additional prizes may be also awarded. In the years to come we expect the competition to grow and to become a presti-gious award to win.
So what are you waiting for? Get your cameras dusted off and start looking at bonsai in a whole new way. Share with the rest of BSF your “Moments of Perfection” so that they can be inspired to search for their very own. .

moment in time is rarely heard in the world of Bonsai. Bonsai is an art form that continues to evolve,
improve and grow. Trees get better with age and their styles, and branches can bring on drastic changes. So why is it that there are so many times while doing bonsai that the artist is instantly rewarded with fl eeting visions of perfection?
Not only does the bonsai tree change, but so does the artist. Touring artists from all over the U.S., and the world for that mat-ter, can infl uence an artist’s per-ception and vision so much that they will rethink the design of their tree and create a whole dif-ferent look to a well established tree. Just like the great oil paint-ing artworks in the past that were painted over by another painting all together. The history, passion, vision are completely lost. You would think after this amount of time there would be a way to cap-ture that history, that “Spirit” of the journey of a bonsai.
Well there is, and it is not a new concept. Through photography anyone, and I mean anyone, can capture a moment of an artist’s
contemplation, the friendship of a group of bonsai enthusiasts, or even a young child’s eyes looking on with amazement. There are so many of those fl eeting moments that can be preserved to share wonderful moments in time that would be otherwise lost.
This year the Bonsai Societies of Florida has created a photo contest to promote the art of both through photography. It is intended to bring the vision of the artists in a different point of view and to bring others that may not focus on doing bonsai but appre-ciating the trees instead. There is so much to be shared in bonsai and so many great moments that should be showcased for others to see.

Tropical Escambron

lerodendrum aculeatum, Escambron, is native to the island of Puerto Rico. This native is perfect for bonsai with its interestingly beautifully textured trunk similar in appearance to the corky, yellow-fl owered Tabebuia chrysantha of South Florida. The young bright green leaves reduce eas-ily to 1/4 inch or less and turn a dark rich green with maturity. New growth appears easily on old wood. If the branches are left to stretch you will be rewarded in spring with small white fl owers.
These Puerto Rican yamadori show deeply furrowed trunks with a variety of shapes from straight to spectacularly twisted.
They develop quickly into beauti-ful specimen bonsai.
The Escambron is a sun lover. Full sun is its natural environ-
ment even in the hottest of areas. This bonsai will grow in lower light conditions, but will have longer internodes and larger leaves. For maximum leaf reduction and tight growth, it is best grown in as much sun as you can provide.

winter winds of Florida. Be sure to protect when tem-peratures are fore-cast below 50ºF. If a threat of freeze is predicted, be sure to bring inside or if leaving outside protect under a plant blanket. For a boost in heat place a light bulb under the bench for added warmth dur-ing the night.
Escambron is fond of water. It likes to be well-watered and should never be permitted to completely dry out. Test for soil moisture; if the top layer appears dry, it is time to water.
This bonsai loves frequent fer-tilization. Regular fertilization promots vigorous growth. I fertilize my Escambron weekly with Miracle-Gro®. In addition, it gets a periodic dose of organic fertilizer which promotes really
lush green growth. Some recom-mend using a slow-release fertil-izer during the winter months. I slow down my application of fertilizer during the winter, but never stop completely. Here in South Florida the trees continue growing year round and take a break for a few weeks around the beginning of the year and again in the extreme heat of mid-summer.
The tree grows well in a neutral pH environment.

Spider Mites - A Common Bonsai Pest

pider mites are common plant pests. Symptoms of injury include fl ecking, discoloration (bronzing) and scorching of leaves. Injury can lead to leaf loss and even plant death. Natural enemies include small lady beetles, predatory
mites, minute pirate bugs, big-eyed bugs and predatory thrips.
One reason that spider mites become a problem is insecticides that kill their natural predators.
Irrigation and moisture manage-ment can be important cultural controls for spider mites.
Spider mites are common pest problems on many plants around yards and gardens. Injury is caused as they feed, bruising the cells with their small, whiplike mouthparts and ingesting the sap. Damaged areas typically appear marked with many small, light fl ecks, giving the plant a some-what speckled appearance.
Following severe infestations, leaves become discolored, pro-ducing an unthrifty gray or bronze look to the plant. Leaves and needles may ultimately
become scorched and drop pre-maturely. Spider mites frequently kill plants or cause serious stress to them.
Spider mites (Family: Tetranychidae) are classed as a type of arachnid, relatives of insects that also include spiders, ticks, daddy-longlegs and scorpi-ons. Spider mites are small and often diffi cult to see with the unaided eye. Their colors range from red and brown to yellow and green, depending on the spe-cies of spider mite and seasonal changes in their appearance.
Many spider mites produce web-bing, particularly when they occur in high populations. This webbing gives the mites and their eggs some protection from

natural enemies and environ-mental fl uctuations. Webbing produced by spiders, as well as fl uff produced by cottonwoods, often is confused with the web-bing of spider mites.
The most important spider mite is the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). This mite attacks a wide range of garden plants, including many vegeta-bles (e.g., beans, eggplant), fruits (e.g., raspberries, currants, pear) and fl owers. The two-spotted spider mite is also the most important species on house plants. It is a prolifi c producer of webbing.
Evergreens tend to host other mites, notably the spruce spider mite (Oligonychus unun-guis) on spruce and juniper, Oligonychus subnudus on pines, and Platytetranychus libocedri on arborvitae and juniper. Honeylocust, particularly those in drier sites, are almost invari-ably infested with the honey-locust spider mite (Platytetranychus multidigituli). Other mites may
aff ect shade trees such as elm, mountain ash and oak.
Another complex of mites is associated with turfgrass, including the clover mite and Banks grass mite.… Clover mites also are the common mite that enters homes in fall and spring, sometimes creating sig-nifi cant nuisance problems in the process.
LIFE HISTORY AND HABITS
Spider mites develop from eggs, which usually are laid near the veins of leaves during the grow-ing season. Most spider mite eggs are round and extremely large in proportion to the size of the mother. After eggs hatch, the old egg shells remain and can be useful in diagnosing spi-der mite problems.
There is some variation in the habits of the diff erent mites that attack garden plants, trees and shrubs. Outdoors, the two-spotted spider mite and honey locust spider mite survive winter as adults hidden in protected

The committee of Epcot exhibit care takers consists of both Disney staff members and BSF volunteers, all of whom do a spec-tacular job of trimming, weeding and making sure the trees are well-cared for on a daily basis.

Represented is a beautiful selection of Florida bonsai from around the state – Bald Cypress, Buttonwood, Casuarina, Chinese Elm, Ficus, Jaboticaba, Trident Maple, Black Pine, Podocarpus, Brazilian Raintree and Yaupon Holly.

Third U.S.National Bonsai Exhibition
his June 9–10, 2012 is the Third U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition in Rochester, New York at the Fair and Expo Center. There will be over 200 Museum-Quality Bonsai from private and public collections from around the country. For those who have missed the fi rst two exhibitions, this is your chance to experience some of the fi nest trees in American bonsai.
In addition to the exhibition, there will be a sales area with ven-dors from across the country, as well as demonstrations by Yasuo Mitsuya and Marc Noelanders. The weekend will be capped off with an Award Banquet and Benefi t Auction.
Following the Exhibition there will be a special Mitsuya Bonsai Seminar on Monday and Tuesday, June 11 and 12, at the International Bonsai Arboretum featuring Yasuo Mitsuya from Tokai Bonsai Garden in Toyohashi, Japan. Also presenting will be Kathy Shaner (CA), who completed her apprenticeship with Mr. Mitsuya. On Monday Mr. Mitsuya and Ms Shaner will teach Advanced Bonsai Techniques. Short
demonstrations will illustrate Mr. Mitsuya’s techniques. Ms Shaner will explain the theory, process and aftercare. In addition, there will be critiques of masterpiece bonsai to help improve the design incorporating the Mr. Mitsuya’s demonstrated techniques.
On Tuesday, the seminar will focus on The Art of Bonsai Display. Displaying bonsai is the ultimate level of bonsai appre-ciation. Mr. Mitsuya has studied the bonsai display and created his own personal guidelines for creating effective displays. The International Bonsai Arboretum will be used to create numerous distinctive displays highlighting the four seasons. The afternoon session will see participants creat-ing their own displays.
