Although many may not know, the GuelphCanada Day celebrations were started back in1992. One man, Chandra Khotari, an immi-grant from India, who was also a fiercelyproud Canadian was driving with his son oneday when he was asked the question, “Dad,why do we not have fireworks in Guelph onCanada Day?”He didn’t have an answer for his son, and

after giving it some thought, he believed thatthere should be a major Canada DayCelebration in Guelph. As a long-time member of the Rotary Club

of Guelph, he approached the club to see ifthey would support him with this initiative.Club members thought this was a great ideaand immediately got behind him.Chandra was not only a great organizer, but

also a great marketer. Within weeks of thisidea being approved, he was on local radiostations, TV stations, and had interviews in thelocal newspapers about the Inaugural CanadaDay Celebration for Guelph. As a result of his effort, and the effort of the

club, this celebration had over 30,000 peoplein the first year, which was a larger successthan anybody could have ever dreamed of.Still run by the Rotary Club of Guelph, theCanada Day celebration continues with thesame strength today. Over 20 years later, theevent consistently has 30,000+ people everyyear out to Riverside Park on July 1st for agreat day of activities, fun, entertainment, and of course the fireworks.Unfortunately Chandra Khotari passed away

in December of 2012. While he largely want-ed to start this project for his own children sothey could celebrate this great nation intheir home city, I am not sure that he everunderstood the lasting impact that it wouldhave on the community. Although this will bethe first Canada Day that he is not a partof since its inception, he will certainlynot be forgotten this July 1st as he willbe in the minds and hearts of all theRotarians as well as many of the otherpatrons of Guelph as we celebrate ourgreat nation.

River Run Centre recently launched its2013-2014 season of professional enter-tainment. “The words evocative and outthere reflect this season’s focus onhumour, unique new works and large-scale spectacles,” said River Run ManagerDanna Evans. “We’re expanding our com-edy series, bringing back big-name musicand acrobatic hits, and also introducingnew stars to the stage.”A 30% Early Bird Discount is available

What happens when you cross good people, long term vision and sound community leader-ship? You get an endless stream of grants forgreat community programs. Endowments atThe Guelph Community Foundation give backto the community for good…forever.“One core function of The Guelph

Community Foundation is to build endow-ments, to manage those funds prudently and towork with donors to distribute them to an issuearea they care about,” explains ExecutiveDirector, Andrea Olson. “Donors can choose afield of interest, a designated charity or recom-mend grants annually themselves – that’s adonor advised fund. Alternatively, funds can bemade available for The Foundation to distributethrough its Community Grants program.”The range of giving options for donors and

the breadth of granting means that TheFoundation can fund a broad spectrum oforganizations and projects that contribute to allaspects of community well being. Two granting streams are now accepting pro-

posals, until July 26, 2013: the CommunityGrants Program and the Musagetes GrantProgram. The Community Grants Program–Several

Foundation funds support the CommunityGrants program, including The Foundation’sCommunity Fund, to which anyone can donateany amount. A number of local businesses, families, and individuals have also set up unre-stricted funds in their name to support the

Foundation’s Community Grants program. TheCommunity Grants program has grown andbenefited from a recently established endow-ment, the McKeough Taylor Fund. The Community Grants program accepts

applications from charitable organizations thatprovide projects/activities in: Health andWellness, Social Services, Arts and Culture,Children and Youth, Recreation, Education, andthe Environment. For 2013, a total of approxi-mately $50,000 is available with most grantsranging between $1,500 to $3,000.Musagetes Grant Program–The Musagetes

Fund, a donor advised fund, was created in2004 to focus on performing, visual, and liter-ary arts excellence in our community. Sincethen, the fund has disbursed more than$220,000 locally. For 2013, the MusagetesFund is particularly interested in newapproaches to building community and culture.A total of approximately $50,000 is availablefrom the Musagetes Fund Grants Program.Interested in applying to a granting program

New public art opportunity for artists

20th anniversary for Wyndham Art Supplies

The City of Guelph is inviting experienced, profes-sional individual artists, or teams, to apply for theopportunity to create new public artwork for theCivic Precinct. The artwork, which will be installed in the area

bordered by Wilson, Carden, and Farquhar streets, isexpected to create unity between City Hall, MarketSquare, Guelph Central Station and the GuelphFarmer’s Market building.“Our hope is that the artwork will reinforce the

unique history of the area as the city’s primary gath-ering space, contribute to the animation of the space, and encourage interaction and a sense of playful-ness,” says Sally Wismer, chair of the Public ArtCommittee. The project is being coordinated by thePublic Art Committee, a subcommittee of theCouncil-appointed Cultural Advisory Committee.

The City will review the submitted materials byqualified applicants and develop a ranked list of pre-qualified candidates who will be invited to submitdetailed proposals for the creation of the site-specificpublic art. Installation of the new work is scheduledto be completed by fall 2014.“This is an excellent opportunity for artists and an

exciting first step in building a Public Art programfor Guelph,” says Astero Kalogeropoulos, the City’sArts and Culture program officer. The total budget for the project is $150,000, whichwas approved by City Council through the 2013 capi-tal budget process.Complete details about the application and

pre-qualification process are available atwww.guelph.ca or bycontacting [email protected].

It was 20 years ago that Otto Ahlersapproached his son Chris with an interest inopening a retail business. At the time it was stillundetermined whether the business wouldspecialize in stationary, books, gifts, orart supplies. After researching Guelph, Toronto and

Burlington as possible locations, Wyndham ArtSupplies opened at 164 Wyndham Street North. In the early years the store was operated byChris, his parents Otto and Marg, and his highschool friend Jake Yerex, who studied at boththe Ontario College of Art and U of Gfor fine art. With Guelph being a market that was under-

served in terms of art supplies, the new busi-ness quickly grew. At one time it had a dedicat-ed Art Gallery space, but as the departmentsincreased, the front window soon became theplace to display the work of local artists. Dueto customer demand, professional framing andmatting was introduced, as well as a line ofexotic papers. In 2008 Wyndham Art Supplies moved

across the street to their currentlocation at 125 Wyndham Street. With a staff of 12, the store nowcarries over 20,000 individualproducts, with items for childrento adults, appropriate for begin-ners and experts, professionalsor amateurs. Customers’interests range from printmak-ing, to drawing, fibre art, book-binding, photography, painting, and more. The store also has anonline e-commerce presenceand sells educational products tohigh schools and universities.Over the twenty years, the store

has maintained a strong regionalcustomer base by providing thehigh level of expertise and serv-ice often found in an independ-ent business, while sellingquality products at prices that areoften less expensive than the bigbox competitors.Otto and Marg have recently

retired from the day-to-day operations ofthe store.“Our continued success comes from the

growing arts and culture community inGuelph,” says Chris Ahlers. “It is this culturalindustry that plays a big part in the health, diversity and vibrancy of a city."

15th anniversary for Guelph School of Art

Shortly after Wyndham Art Supplies opened indowntown Guelph, local artist Nan Hogg beganrunning art classes out of the back of the store. When the lower level of the original

Wyndham Art Supplies building became avail-able, the owners saw an opportunity to com-plement the products they were selling with theaddition of art instruction. The Guelph School of Art soon opened with

Marg Ahlers as the first Director of the, programs.Fifteen years later, The Guelph School of Art

is now situated on the third floor of theWyndham Art building at 125 Wyndham StreetNorth. The studio space boasts plenty of natu-

ral light and architectural interest.Classes and workshops run year-round for

both children and adults. Children’s day campsare offered during Winter and March Breakand the summer months. A wide range of adultclasses are suited to both the beginner andseasoned artist in a range of media and spe-cialties. A team of approximately 12 instruc-tors, many with experience teaching at the uni-versity level, are called upon for their differentspecialties.Third floor also hosts functions and events

including Nuit Blanche, Fourth Fridays, andevents supporting youth in the arts.
