Joint Volunteer Recruitment Drive

The Shetland Befriending Scheme is Funded in 2014/ 15 by:

Everyone in the Befriending Scheme office has been very busy over the summer period, getting everything organised for the next recruitment drive. This campaign launches on 11th August 2014 and runs for 6 weeks. Watch out for the posters! This drive is to attract volunteers for all sections - 7-25 and 60+. Training will take place in October and November at various times and days. We decided to use the newsletter to remind you to tell all your family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues how much you love befriending someone!

Thank you for all your support and hard work

Although it might seem like we are always

recruiting and training new volunteers,

because we only ask for a 6 month

commitment, we often have roughly the

same number of volunteers leaving us!

This means that we always have lots of

young people, young adults and 60+

adults waiting to find a suitable volunteer.

Reminder - It is okay to tell people that you are a befriender

but please remember NOT to share surnames, area of living, specific problems the person you are matched to is facing or where they go to school to maintain confidentiality. It is totally fine to tell people what you get out of befriending, the activities you have done, the training and support you access from the scheme and any general benefits you have seen befriending have. They might think it sounds really good and want to become a befriender themselves....

Please spread the word as widely as

you can!

Scheme staff are happy to come in to speak to groups of p e o p l e e . g . workplaces/churches etc to tell them all about befriending.

Just ask us!

We would like to thank all

our funders - we couldn't

deliver the service we do

without their input.

Generous Donations!

Since the last newsletter, the scheme has been very lucky to have received 5 incredibly generous donations.

The scheme received £1000 for the Children and Young People’s section from Globus. This cheque took us completely by surprise as we had been nominated by Globus staff without our knowledge!

The scheme received £500 from BP for the younger 3 sections. We were nominated by two BP staff (Ms Susan Leask and Miss Stroma Smith) who felt the scheme was a very worthy cause to support.

The scheme was successful at securing £1000 from Austin & Hope Pilkington Trust for our 60+ section

And the 60+ Section was delighted to also receive a £150 donation by Sharon’s Swap shop and also a lovely surprise £50 private donation.

We have also been circulating d o n a t i o n t i n s i n v a r i o u s establishments and have collected a total of £280 from the generous general public. We have decided to use these donations to update our Equipment Bank (see article on page 6) and to help us with the cost of group activities. We are delighted that the scheme is seen as a worthy cause for companies and individuals to donate money to.

“We would like to “We would like to “We would like to sincerely thank everyone sincerely thank everyone sincerely thank everyone who has donated to us” who has donated to us” who has donated to us”

You may know that the scheme relies on local and external funding to continue to offer matches to service users. This is continuing to be a challenge across all services in the voluntary sector. The scheme is delighted to update you on our recent funding successes which means that we can continue to offer the current service to individuals throughout Shetland. Children and Young People’s Section This section is currently funded by Shetland Charitable Trust and it continues to support children and young people aged 7-15. This section was also successful at securing £1500 from The Tesco Charity Trust to continue to support this section.

ASN Section This Section was awarded £21,093 for 2014/15 from Short Breaks Fund - Better Breaks. This, along with previously sourced funding from Children In Need and the Service Level Agreement with the council means that the section will continue to support young people with additional support needs aged 7-18. Young Adult Section The Young Adult Section is continuing to be funded by Lottery Young Start. This, along with the Service Level Agreement with the council, means that the section can continue to support young adults aged 16-25. 60+ Section Alongside having Elaine working full time, the 60+ section has secured funding from the Big Lottery to continue Pauline’s part-time post for another year. This means that a further 10 60+ adults can access the scheme in 14/15.

Shetland Befriending Scheme works under the umbrella of Voluntary Action Shetland

(VAS).

We were delighted to be selected to be on the front cover of the VAS Annual

Report.

Dave Donaldson came along to do a photo shoot with us,

and he allowed us to do some silly photos once we had

mastered the formal ones. It was a brilliant surprise when

Catherine Hughson (Executive Officer of VAS) chose one of our silly photos (left) for the

cover instead of a posed one!

See below for a selection of the out-takes!

“A good team, like a good show, comes into being when the separate individuals

working together create, in essence, another separate higher entity - the team - the show - which is better than any of those individuals can ever be on their

own.” Gary David Goldberg

Copies of the Voluntary Action Shetland Annual

Report 2013/14 can be accessed from Market House

reception, Monday to Friday,

Quotes about Befriending

by Public Figures

“Befriending provides welcome support for some of the most vulnerable members of society and we greatly value the work undertaken by those who voluntarily give up their own time to help others. We see volunteering as an important means of extending people's participation in their communities, and we respect the contribution that befriending makes to the lives of all those involved.” —Tony Blair – former Prime Minister

“It is the need of every single one of us, child or grown-up, to feel wanted, to feel we belong and that we matter to someone else in the world. We all know, from our own experience, that feeling isolated from those around us, alienated from society, makes us sad, even angry. The deeper this isolation becomes, the more hurtful and resentful we feel and the more this is reflected in our behaviour. Such behaviour only leads to greater alienation. Children who from an early age feel alone and apart from the rest of the world, and there are so many of them, who become angry and hurt, have little chance of leading fulfilled lives. They are lost from the start. Above all, they need friendship, the solid warmth of someone who cares and goes on caring. With such lasting friendship, self worth and self confidence can flourish, and a child's life can be altered forever.” —Michael Morpurgo, Children's Laureate

“Befriending provides a valuable lifeline to many people who feel isolated in their communities often as a result of ill health or poverty. I would like to thank all those who volunteer as befrienders and I hope that your numbers will increase in coming years. Your kindness and hard work is, I know, very much appreciated by those you help.” —Charles Kennedy – Former Leader of the Liberal Democrats

“Volunteer befrienders exemplify concern for others in action. They give their time to help others on a personal basis because they want to and because they recognise that our obligation to one another is not fulfilled simply by paying our taxes. This personal care is especially effective because it recognises that everyone's needs are different and that many problems cannot be solved by money alone or through agencies of government. We owe volunteer b e f r i e n de rs , s oc i e t y ' s g oo d neighbours, a huge debt of gratitude.” —David McLetchie – Leader of the Scottish Conservatives and Unionist

“We all need support and friendship, regardless of circumstances. But where do people turn when friends and family are simply no longer there, or can't help us through a difficult time, or need all our care and attention and can't give us any in return? Thank goodness for befriending projects, who help fill the empty spaces where care, support and a listening ear need to be.” —Nicola Sturgeon – MSP

“ I be l ieve that befriending can make a real difference to a person's life. For children and young people a supportive befriender can provide real help through a crisis situation or enable them to perform better at school or act as a bridge to involvement in the child or young person's community.” — H u g h R Mackintosh, Director of Children's Social Services, Barnardos

It is brilliant to hear that Befriending is seen as a very positive thing, no matter where it is taking place. S h e t l a n d Befriending Scheme is part of a wider n e t w o r k o f B e f r i e n d i n g throughout the UK, but every service is different. S h e t l a n d Befriending Scheme is often held up by B e f r i e n d i n g Networks as an example of very good practice in training and service delivery.

Aa Fired Up (7-25) 4 young people and their befrienders came along to Aa Fired Up in February and had a great time painting lots of different things! It was a shame that the items had to be fired (so they couldn't be taken home that night) but it was really exciting to see them finished after a week! The colours were all really bright and vibrant! Lerwick Lifeboat (7-25) 5 young people and their befrienders braved the elements to visit the Lerwick Lifeboat and

Station in May. The crew were brilliant, telling everyone how things worked and patiently answered lots of questions! We got to hear exciting stories of rescues and they even let us try on the oilskins! Mid Brae Inn (60+) 11 60+ Adults and their befrienders had a very enjoyable lunch at the Mid Brae Inn in June. Although the menu was a little d i f f e ren t t han was expected, everyone had a good time and liked the opportunity to catch up with

Staff Updates/Changes 60+ Section Lynn (Project Co-ordinator) has worked really hard to secure extended funding for the part time post in the 60+ section. She is delighted that Big Lottery were able to extend their funding to allow Pauline Mackie to stay in her part time post for another year, until July 2015.

C&YP Section Amanda Brown is returning to her Children and Young People post in September 2014. She has had a really busy time looking after peerie Calla and will be returning to work 2 days a week. Mairi has done a brilliant job covering Amanda’s maternity, and will continue to work with this section as a job share with Amanda, working 3 days a week.

….. And Peer Support Sessions Activities for 60+

In February, volunteers from the 60+ section were invited to come together to share their ideas and experiences of the types of activities they had recently undertaken with their 60+ adult. This proved purposeful as the volunteers were able to get some inspiration from other volunteers and gain new ideas of things to do.

each other in an informal setting. Upcoming Activities The Befriending Team are striving to be as ‘green’ as possible, so from now on, we will only be sending peer support and group activity invites via email. This is to reduce the amount of paper, envelopes and ink we use, not to mention the ever- increasing postage charges! If you would prefer to receive a paper copy, please just let your development worker know.

YA section Mairi Jamieson will continue to be in the befriending office full time as she is going to continue working with the Young Adults section on a part time basis. This means that she will working for 2 days in this role.

Without you as

volunteers, the

scheme would not

sincerely thank

you for all your

commitment.

Group Activities…..

If you have any ideas of a peer support session that

you would like us to do -

please just let us know!

Dr ugs Aw a r en es s (OPEN) In March, 4 volunteers took the opportunity to learn more about the drugs that are in Shetland at the moment. It was definitely eye-opening! T h e O P E N p e e r educators had brilliant, up to date knowledge and delivered it in a very informal and accessible way.

S e x u a l H e a l t h Awareness (OPEN Peer Educators) In June, 2 volunteers took part in this really interesting session run by t h e O P E N P e e r Educators. Befriending approached OPEN to do this session as a couple of volunteers were facing these kinds of challenges in their matches. So if you have an idea for a peer support, just let us know!
