Summer is supposed to be here, but is it just me that still thinks the weather was a bit chilly until the end

of June? Then it just became to hot - well, for me anyway! Hopefully if you are getting married in the next few

months, the weather should stay warm and we should get some sunny days ahead.

When it comes to wedding cakes, I have to admit that I am a bit of a traditionalist. I prefer the three

tiered, classic cake with floral decorations, but then it’s not all in the appearance, but in the choice of flavours

as well now days. When I got married, I was fortunate enough to have a future Mother-in-Law who made our

cake (see below), and it also saved a bit out of our budget too.

So how much would you be prepared to pay for a wedding cake? The prices

can soon mount up, depending on style, flavours and how many tiers and yes

there is a lot of time and effort that goes into a professional cake, but some prices

can be extortionate. On the other hand you do pay for what you get, so the

cheapest option is not always the right choice.

Then there is the decision on flavour - again we went for the traditional two

layers of fruit cake with the smallest, top tier as a plain sponge cake. This was a

compromise we made as it was all my future Mother-in-Law was prepared to

make. With hindsight I wish we had gone for a carrot cake layer and maybe a

chocolate sponge. I dread to think what she would have thought it I had asked for

a rainbow style sponge cake!

The trend now seem to go towards individual cupcakes usually with a

slightly larger cake too, as the Bride and Groom will want something to cut on

the day, again another tradition and usually one for the

photo album. With the cupcakes option, at least it means

your guests won’t be arguing over who gets the biggest

slice!

What ever your budget is and if you have a colour

scheme or a theme to your wedding, there will be a cake

out there to suit you - and I would love to see the cake

that you choose. Don’t forget to send me a photograph

(or a slice!).
