ART & ART HISTORY
Crafting an American Identity: The Hudson River School of Painting $20 / $25
MP6710 – Moorings Park (Naples) – May 20 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday – 1.5 hours
America’s first – and only – real school of art was the 19th century art movement called the Hudson River School. Its goal was to craft
a new kind of art that glorified the ideals, spirituality, grandeur, and majesty of the new world of America as distinct and independent
from the old world of Europe. As the school evolved, its practitioners expanded their horizons, geographically and artistically, heading
to America’s west, Central and South America, and finally to “America’s Eden” – Florida. Instructor: Carol Jonson
Martin Johnson Heade: Florida’s First Artist $20 / $25
MP6711 – Moorings Park (Naples) – May 27 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday – 1.5 hours
Martin Johnson Heade was the first important American artist to live permanently in Florida. A member of the 19th century Hudson
River School of painters, Heade moved to St. Augustine and began painting luminist works that enticed people to come to Florida –
newly opened to them with the railroads and grand hotels built by Heade’s patron, Henry Morrison Flagler. Instructor: Carol Jonson
The History and Collection of the Louvre, Paris, France $20 / $25
TR6722 – The Terraces (Bonita Springs) – June 15 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday – 1.5 hours
Most visitors to some of the world’s greatest – and largest – museums experience only a whirlwind tour of an hour or two. However,
if time permits, an on-your-own tour can be a marvelous journey, especially if you plan ahead for what you would most like to see.
This class surveys some of the highlights of this incredible museum. Instructor: Carol Jonson
In the Gardens of Claude Monet’s Giverny $20 / $25
NC6723 – Naples Center – June 22 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday – 1.5 hours
The Impressionist master, Claude Monet, is one of the world’s most beloved artists. Monet planted gardens wherever he lived, but his
masterpiece was Giverny, where he spent more than half of his long and very productive life. The beautiful gardens he created at
Giverny were a never-ending source of inspiration for Monet. Join us as we look at photos of the gardens and how Monet translated
them into beautiful works of art. Instructor: Carol Jonson
The Hermitage Museum – Legacy of the Czars $20 / $25
MP6715 – Moorings Park (Naples) – June 24 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday – 1.5 hours
Learn how the spectacular private collection of a Russian Empress became one of the largest and most famous museums in the world.
Explore the once official residence of the Romanovs. This glittering palace has more than 500 rooms, and houses priceless treasures
assembled over 250 years by one of the world’s richest and most powerful dynasties. Instructor: Carol Jonson
History’s Great Art Heists $20 / $25
NC6721 – Naples Center – June 29 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday – 1.5 hours
This lecture will investigate some of the world’s most famous art heists of the past three centuries including: Napoleon’s and Lord
Elgin’s looting in Egypt, Greece, and Italy; the theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre; and the still-unsolved burglary of Boston’s
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Instructor: Carol Jonson

The Art and Architecture of Sicily $20 / $25
NC6724 – Naples Center – August 17 at 10am – 11:30am, Monday – 1.5 hours
Sicily – the largest island in the Mediterranean – has a rich and unique culture that extends back beyond its colonization by the Greeks
in the 8th century BC. This class will explore some of the island’s history, its important archaeological sites, architecture, art, and one
of its crowning glories – centuries of glowing mosaics. Instructor: Carol Jonson
Tiffany Treasures $20 / $25
MP6720 – Moorings Park (Naples) – August 19 at 10am – 11:30am, Wednesday – 1.5 hours
Louis Comfort Tiffany – best known for his innovative and beautiful colored glass lamps and stained glass windows – has been called
“the man who could do everything.” A painter, a potter, a glass artist, an architect, and an interior designer, Tiffany was on a lifelong
quest to bring beauty into American lives and homes. His own spectacular summer home, Laurelton Hall on Long Island, brought this
dream to life. Destroyed by fire in 1957, Laurelton has risen from the ashes – recreated inside another little-known treasure – the Morse
Museum in Winter Park, Florida. Instructor: Carol Jonson

Choose one of the course options above. Ansel Adams said, “You don’t take a photograph, you make a photograph.” Photography is a
very subjective endeavor. There are no hard-and-fast rules to follow that always assure your picture will be, well, “picture perfect.”
However, an understanding of light, exposure, and compositional guidelines that can be applied to virtually any scene will enhance its
impact. Understanding these principles will help you to capture more compelling images, turning your snapshots into works of art. This
class would be for all photographers, regardless of the camera they use. Instructor: Frank Berna

out to make photographs. Travel photography expresses the feeling of a time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its
natural state, and has no geographical limitations. Learn how to create the images that are only seen in magazines. Instructor: Frank

Monster Hurricanes: Nature’s Awesome Machine $20 / $25
NC6862 – Naples Center – July 9 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday – 1.5 hours
Andrew, Camille, Gilbert, Donna, Wilma, Sandy, and some 280 other storms bearing minimum sustained winds of 74 mph have blasted
one or more states since 1851, when record keeping started. At 200 mph, Andrew, Camille and other “cat 5” hurricanes terrorized and
destroyed all in their paths. Originally identified by year or shore destruction, later by women’s names, and finally, men’s names were
also honored. We will look at how and why they form, grow, move, and die. Hear the stories behind a half-dozen or so raging storms.
Be prepared to fly into the heart of one of these monsters where deceptively peaceful, wispy clouds float over a foaming hellish sea
below. You will be in the eye! Instructor: Steven Mutart
