The Parks and Recreation Department would like to welcome new members to the administration team. As summer comes into full swing, Norman buzzes with spe-cial events for families and sports to keep the kiddos busy.

BJ Brewer steps up to the plate as the Sports and Special Events Coordinator. BJ joined the department in March 2015. He is a graduate of Texas A&M and has been in-volved with sports and recreation since 1999.

“In addition to my family and I joining this great com-munity, I am most excited about the opportunity to interact with more families than ever before by serving the great city of Norman,” says BJ. The experience he has had with sports leagues and community events has

provided him with great understanding on how to serve the families of Norman.

“BJ brings a lot of great experience that we look forward to,” says Director of Parks and Recreation Jud Foster. “Special events is an area we have been asked to expand and his background will bring a lot to the department in that regard.”

Another addition to the department is new Parks Super-intendent Jeff Edwards. He comes to the department with 10 years of experience in park maintenance and planning in his hometown of Sand Springs. Jeff graduated from the University of Oklahoma and is excited to return to a place that feels like a second hometown, he says.

“Norman is a vibrant and beautiful town,” says Jeff. “I’m looking forward to expanding on the services al-ready offered to the citizens and providing an improved quality of life for kids and families.”

As the new park superinten-dent, Jeff hopes to increase the curb appeal of parks in Norman. Working on sign-age or additional landscaping will provide a positive first impression of the parks to visi-tors when they drive up to the properties, he says.

Jeff’s leadership and management experience will assist in building a team of leaders that will work together to create a great place for the citizens of Norman.

“Jeff brings good background experience in capital project management that we are anxious to put to work,” says Jud.

Jud and the City of Norman would like to thank retired employees Bill Ulch and Wayne Parrish for their service to the city and the citizens of Norman. Bill served as Park Superintendent and provided great services for nearly 30 years. Wayne’s service as Sports Coordinator provided great experiences for the youth of Norman. Both Bill and Wayne had long careers that will reap benefits for the department for years to come. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and will be missed, Jud says.

RECREATION

The school year has ended and summer is here! If you are looking for a fun, safe place for your child to go this summer, look no further than Norman Parks & Rec-reation. With a variety of activities, swimming and field trips, your child will be entertained with no worries for yourself!

Traditional day camps are for children ages 5-11. Camps are offered in weekly sessions beginning May 26th and ending August 14th. Camp hours are from 9am-4pm. Ex-tended hours are available at no extra cost. Children may be dropped off as early as 7am and picked up no later than 6pm. The 12th Avenue Recreation day camp visits the Westwood Pool on Wednesdays and Fridays and goes on a weekly field-trip every Monday. Field Trips in the past included day trips to Hey Day, Moore Warren The-atre, Star Skate, Oklahoma City Zoo, etc. The Irving Rec-reation Day camp visits the University of Oklahoma pool on Tuesdays and has a weekly field trip held on Thurs-days. Field trips this summer will include going to places such as, Andy Alligators, the Science Museum Oklahoma, Chucky Cheese, bowling alley, etc. This camp incorpo-rates educational interests in fun and exciting ways by its partnerships with local entities such as the Pioneer Library System who will hold a weekly reading program as well as a partnership with the OU Technology Center who will demonstrate skills in robotics with the children. Other activities at both camps include board/card games, arts/crafts, video games, and group games. The 2 traditional day camp locations with prices are:

12th Avenue Recreation Center (405) 292-9764, $135 per weekIrving Recreation Center (405) 292-9774, $120 per week

Norman Parks & Recreation also offers sports camps located at the Whittier Recreation Center. These camps are mainly for children ages 5-12 but there are also some camps for 4 year olds and teens ages 13-14. Some of the sports included, but not limited to, are: soccer, baseball/softball, basketball, football, volleyball, lacrosse, and cheer. These camps are a great opportunity to either in-troduce your child to the fundamentals of the sport or to sharpen and practice their already existing skills. All of the sports camps are led by professional, local and enthusias-tic coaches’ as well as camp staff counselors. Every camp ends with a child receiving a participant camp shirt and a snocone from local shop, EskimoSno. Camps begin May 27th and end July 30th. Camp hours are from 9am-12pm. Cost varies depending on specific camp. Contact Whittier Recreation Center for more information (405) 292-9703.

Camp staff members are CPR/First Aid certified and our 2 traditional day camps are accredited with the American Camping Association.

For enrollment in the traditional camps, full payment is required for the first session for which your child is enrolled. A non-refundable deposit is also required for each additional week you would like your child to attend in order to hold their spot for that week. For enroll-ment in the sports camps payments are due the Friday before each camp begins. For more information please call 12th, Irving or Whittier Recreation Centers, also visit www.normanfun.com or www.youthsportsofnorman.com.
