In this class campers will learn the basics of forensics (fi ngerprinting, footprints/tracks, DNA, hair/fi ber samples) and how to hone their detective repertoire. After learning the basic biology, chemistry, and physics that make up crime scene investigation, campers will be faced with uncovering crime scenes on the Overlake campus and use their newly acquired investigative skills to solve mysteries.

In this course, campers will spend time working with analog circuit components (resistors, diodes, transistors, etc.) to construct a motorized toy vehicle. Students will learn how to incorporate different mechanisms into their robot design, troubleshoot and modify their design as necessary, and observe how the behavior of the robot changes as a result of speed, turning rate, and sensitivity to light/noise. Magic, fairies, and mishap, oh my! Students in this class will develop their theatre skills including: role-playing, improvisation, creating costumes, character development, stage combat, and acting comedy all through the lens of Shakespeare’s famous comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is a great course to help students build their confi dence with Shakespeare’s language and performing in general. At the end of the two weeks there will be a small performance for friends and family.

DebateGRADES 6–8 AFTERNOON SESSION: 12:30–3:30 PM TEACHER: EMILY BLACKBURN

In this course, campers will learn the debate format that is used by the Pacifi c Northwest Middle School Debate League. We will focus on research skills, building an argument with evidence, rebutting an opponent’s argument and strengthening public speaking skills. Students will have an opportunity to test out their newly acquired skills in large and small debates held over the session.

In the style of the musical group STOMP, campers will explore the acoustic qualities of everyday household items (trash cans, brooms, plastic tubes, rolling pins etc.). Students will then create and perform musical works that use a unique combination of percussion, movement, dance, and visual comedy. Our two-week workshop will culminate in a public performance on the fi nal day for an invited audience of family, friends and our local community.

Toying with Engineering: Design & ProductionGRADES 5–6 MORNING SESSION: 8:30–11:30 AM TEACHER: TBD

Creativity meets reality when campers in this course become members of an engineering team and compete for a Request for Proposal from a “toy company”. Teams will conduct consumer research, develop a design plan, build prototypes, and conduct tests before putting together their fi nal design. Campers will enjoy the beautiful Overlake campus while learning about the cause and effects of human interaction on nature. Students will participate in an outdoor treasure hunt called geocaching using GPS-enabled devices. Throughout the session, campers will navigate to a specifi c set of GPS coordinates and attempt to fi nd the geocache (clues) hidden at that location to uncover and learn about the types of forestry in the area.

In this course, campers will learn the fundamentals of aerodynamics and apply them to rocket design. Beginning with concepts demonstrated using paper airplanes, students will move on to water-powered soda bottle rockets and fi nish with the design and launch of a recoverable, solid-fuel rocket. In this course, campers will build their own Pinhole camera while learning about black and white photography. Pinhole cameras do not have a lens and instead utilize a small aperture, or pinhole, to capture images. Light from a scene passes through this pinhole and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the camera box. Students will make their light-tight pinhole cameras from various containers found on the Overlake campus.

Stop-Motion AnimationGRADES 5–6 MORNING SESSION: 8:30–11:30 AM TEACHER: MARISA VITIELLO

From puppets to video production, bring your ideas to life with stop-motion animation. Stop-Motion Animation is the process of taking multiple pictures of a still object, then fl ipping the pictures into a movie sequence to see the still objects come to life. In this course campers will produce their own storied movies with crazy creatures made from everyday objects. We will use a combination of stop motion animation and live action to create fun, silly, and action-packed fi lms.

The Overlake School’s High School Volleyball Camp is specially designed to meet the needs of students entering grades 9-12. We will focus on all aspects of the game with the emphasis on fundamentals. Skill development is highlighted during on-court instruction in the following areas: serving, serve receiving, forearm passing, setting, attacking, team defense, blocking, team reception, attack coverage and team transition. This camp will also include some off-court instruction highlighting teamwork, team defense, team rotation and specialized offensive plays.

Middle School Boys & Girls Soccer CampGRADES 5–8 JUNE 15–19: 1–4 PM LEAD INSTRUCTOR: MIKE HUFSTADER COST: $175

This camp is designed to help students improve their individual and group attacking skills. Emphasis will be on dribbling, ball control and shooting as well as small group tactics and speed of play. These are skills necessary for all players on the fi eld whether your camper is a striker, midfi elder or defender. Even goalies need foot skills so they too can benefi t. Challenges and instruction will be geared to each player’s individual skill level.

The Overlake tennis camp is a great way for students with different playing abilities to have a wonderful experience with the sport. This camp is a great opportunity for your student to have a positive lacrosse experi-ence. This camp is for players who want to learn the fundamentals of lacrosse as well as hone and advance their skills. Introductory emphasis will be on learning and improving the skills of passing, catching, and recovery of ground balls. Campers will also learn position play, game rules, and offensive and defensive game strategy. This camp is designed for all ability levels from beginners to experienced players.
