THE WACKIEST PET NAMES OF THE YEAR REVEALED

After 40 years of leadership, Mark Pizzi, president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Direct and Member Solutions, will retire at the end of 2017.

“It has been an incredible privilege, both personally and professionally, to work with Mark,” says CEO Steve Rasmussen. “His vast knowledge of the business has helped the property and casualty organization and the enterprise grow and be successful, and his engaging leadership style has enabled him to build a strong team in every job he has held.”

Pizzi joined Nationwide in 1978 as a personal lines underwriter in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and has progressed through many field, staff, operational and leadership assignments to include regional vice president of Virginia, regional vice president of New York, senior vice president of Regional Operations for the Northern Region, and president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Insurance.

In his current role as president and chief operating officer of Nationwide Direct and Member Solutions, Mark leads the business unit delivering sales and services through direct channels (direct sales, claims, customer service and banking areas).

“His successes are numerous, but both he and Nationwide consider his coaching and mentoring, as well as his innovative and business leadership, his leadership legacy,” Rasmussen says. “In every role, he has provided strong leadership and is known for caring deeply about associates, members, the community and family.”

Around the Company

Memorial Tournament inspires perseveranceThe 2017 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide was a reminder of the importance of positivity and perseverance — and that was true for Nationwide Children’s Hospital Patient Champions, their families and PGA TOUR professionals alike.

Tournament week kicked off with Wednesday’s Pro-Am, where Patient Champions and family members met PGA TOUR professionals and a couple of special guests — including Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer and 2017 Memorial Tournament honoree Greg Norman.

Eight young patients enjoyed a VIP experience that included spending time with Jack and Barbara Nicklaus and enjoying the world famous Muirfield Village milkshakes.

“We partnered with the hospital to celebrate the life-saving research and care provided at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the courage of its young patients to stay positive and never give up,” says Mike Boyd, senior vice president of Enterprise Brand Marketing.

The tournament was capped late Sunday evening on the 18th green, where Jason Dufner sank a 30-foot putt to solidify the win. Dufner is the second golfer born in the state of Ohio to win the Memorial Tournament — the first was Tournament host and founder Jack Nicklaus.

Greg Norman, this year’s Memorial Tournament honoree, spent 331 weeks as the world’s No. 1 golfer in the 1980s and '90s, as ranked by the Official World Golf Rankings. His philanthropic work includes more than 25 years supporting children’s cancer research.

Record grant helps Food Bank of Iowa better serve communityIn April, the Nationwide Foundation awarded the Food Bank of Iowa a $1.5 million grant for capital improvements to its distribution center, a transformational gift that will help them distribute twice as much food to Iowans in need.

This gift is the latest in a series of volunteer and philanthropic contributions from Nationwide and the Nationwide Foundation. Groups of Nationwide associates regularly volunteer at the Food Bank of Iowa, sorting donated food, packaging fresh produce and planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables at giving gardens throughout central Iowa.

The organization moved to its current facility in 1999 and has steadily increased food distribution to more than 1 million pounds per month. The foundation’s gift will fund a facility renovation project, which will completely overhaul the organization’s distribution center, expanding refrigerated and frozen space, maximizing dry-goods storage space and updating electrical and mechanical systems.

The Nationwide Foundation is helping accelerate the most promising research and clinical discoveries at Nationwide Children’s Hospital by announcing a new $10 million gift to the Nationwide Foundation Pediatric Innovation Fund.

Since the Nationwide Foundation established the fund in 2014, a total of $40 million has supported several key clinical and research efforts in heart, health, neonatology, injury prevention and most notably genomics.

The 2017 Nationwide Foundation grant will be allocated for injury research, behavioral health research and the genomics program.

In less than one year since the formal establishment of the Institute, the team and organizational structure has been established; the Cloud computing, IT infrastructure and strategic plan have been established; and plans are in place for cancer-specific exome sequencing, which is on track for later this year.

Most impressive, approximately 40 children and their families have entered a new program and have begun the complex process of exome sequencing with the goal of finding genetic linkages and possible enhanced treatment options for their various conditions.

Nationwide has completed its acquisition of Jefferson National, an industry-leading distributor of tax-advantaged investing solutions for registered investment advisors (RIAs), fee-based advisors and the clients they serve.

Jefferson National is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nationwide. The transaction increases each organization’s ability to serve more partners and members in the ways they prefer to do business. Jefferson National is transitioning to the Nationwide brand.

The current leadership will remain intact and the companies expect no changes to the sales and service experience. The transaction was reviewed by state and federal regulators and required approvals were obtained.

Dunkin Butterbeans nosed out Farrah Pawcett and Fiona Penny Pickles in the dog division, while Little Booty Ham Sandwich purred past Obi Wan Catnobi and Winston Purrchill in the cat category to be crowned the Wackiest Pet Names of 2017.

Each year, Nationwide Pet recognizes the most clever, quirkiest and most creative pet names from our database of more than 600,000 insured pets. After a thorough selection process, the top dog and cat monikers are chosen by the public.

“The results from our Wacky Pet Names competition illustrate the thought and creativity pet owners put into naming their furry family members,” says Scott Liles, vice president and chief pet insurance officer for Nationwide. “Pets hold a special place in our members’ hearts and, as such, many give them names with sentimental — and sometimes silly — meaning.”
