This past Spring, I have had the distinct pleasure to meet with many individuals and

families that expressed interest in membership here at Kirkbrae. It is always exciting

for me to introduce new people to Kirkbrae and to have the chance to review all that

Kirkbrae is and has to offer. I am very proud to have the chance to showcase the

meticulously maintained facilities, the highly recognized dining and event services,

our premier recreational and social programing and most of all, a membership that is

engaged, excited and represents a true community. We have introduced many new

golfing, corporate, junior and social members to the club at no better time to be a

member of Kirkbrae.

The launch of the newly constructed pool and tennis facilities is certainly the

highlight of this Spring. The much-anticipated pool renovation project is complete.

We are so excited to showcase the opening of our new, heated swimming pool!

“ The renovat ions at the pool are complete and the new heated

swimming pool wi l l be open on t ime and within budget .”

Welcome to the 2019 season!

As we embark on a new and highly anticipated year at Kirkbrae I am proud to report

that our club Membership remains strong. This season we welcome many new

golfing and social members to the club. We continue to sustain high membership

levels and strong member engagement which is the heartbeat of Kirkbrae. Our

improvements at the pool and tennis area and on the golf course have demonstrated

the clubs commitment to providing the best services and amenities of any

club throughout our region. Our members enjoy the best conditions, facilities,

recreational programing and dining the private club experience has to offer.

The renovations at the pool are complete and the new heated swimming pool will

be open on time and within budget. The tennis courts are to follow, the wet spring

made both projects incredibly more difficult to execute, but I am very proud of the

efforts that were made in getting both facilities ready for the start of the season. The

Pool Committee led by chairman David Duhamel along with Bob Pielech and Tim

Flanagan worked diligently to see both of these projects through to completion. The

amount of work and detailed attention by this group of guys is greatly appreciated.

By now everyone has had the chance to play the newly renovated 18th hole. The

board continues to get excellent feedback on our golf course improvements and the

latest project is another great example of our determination to make Kirkbrae among

the very best New England has to offer in golf. Special thanks to Chairman Carl Lisa

along with Mike Bradshaw and Mark Richard for working closely together on design

and execution of our golf course renovations.

At the annual meeting on May 21, the board reported on the strong financial position

of the club. Although the wet spring has dampened the activity an eager golfing

membership, the club remains focused on a busy year ahead as we move into the

height of our season.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow Board of Governors. For a

volunteer board, we have incredibly accomplished and talented people who come

together to work seamlessly with our executive staff for the greater good of KCC.

I am proud to serve as President of Kirkbrae and look forward to our strong and

vibrant future.

LET TERS FROM KIRKBR AE

So I guess we had it coming to us?? After what would be considered a mild and tame

Winter (at least compared to the past decade or so), Mother Nature has struck back

with the wettest Spring in recent memory—not the best combination for New England

golfers. But dare I say that I think we may have “weathered the storm” (pun totally

intended) and we are now on a decent streak of good weather that is providing ideal

golfing conditions.

• 2019 is a big year for golf—not only here at Kirkbrae but world-wide. As we sit

here in late-May we’ve already seen a years’ worth of golf news in 4 ½ months:

• January 1 brought us the new Rules of Golf with the most comprehensive changes

to the game since the mid-1950s. Simpler and more concise, the changes saw

some pushback on the professional tours but now seem to be just part of the

game—the way it should be.

• April is always a big month in golf with the Masters—and this year it was BIGGER

than ever with the 15th major title for Tiger Woods. Love him or hate him, Tiger

is the only golfer to “move the needle”. His Masters victory could possibly be the

impetus for another spike in golfers worldwide—just like it was 22 years ago.

• Then we find Brooks Koepka doing his best vintage 2000-Tiger imitation by winning

majors like most people win a match at the club. Four of the last eight majors

belong to Brooks with back-to-back PGAs and US Opens. Impressive to say the least.

Here at the club it’s going to be an impressive year as well:

• Our showcase 18th green opened in late-April to rave reviews and provides a

fair but challenging surface for the final hole of the round—and an awesome

view from the clubhouse!! The final hole always provides drama in many of our

member events—and with the new green it surely won’t disappoint.

M I K E B R A D S H A W , P G A H E A D G O L F P R O F E S S I O N A L

“Our showcase 18th green opened in late-Apri l to rave reviews and provides a fair but cha l lenging sur face for the f ina l hole of the

round—and an awesome view f rom the clubhouse! ! ”

The new layout provides us with extended deck space for additional seating. A soft opening

will occur on Memorial Day weekend. The slide is scheduled to be installed by June 15th,

right in time for the end of the school year! The tennis courts are scheduled to be open mid-

June as well. The courts need the proper curing time before painting for the optimal result.

The unusually wet Spring made it interesting to say the least, but we are able to meet our

scheduled deadlines for these projects and could not be more pleased with the process. Thank

you to Pool Chairman, David Duhamel along with President Ed DeCristofaro, VP Bob Pielech

and Carl Lisa for their thoughtful attention, dedication and support with working through this

project.

The member dining room continues to be a hub of activity for regular and special event dining.

Thank you to all of our members who continue to support the club with your celebratory

events as well as your routine commitment to choosing Kirkbrae to dine. Our member dining

culinary staff led by Sous Chef Dilleccio Olivo, continues to provide the membership with high

quality and high value cuisine. Our members seem to appreciate the casual nature of our

dining which allows us to dress it up or dress it down on occasion with special dining events

and features. The dining room is now open summer hours and the staff looks forward to

serving you this summer!

Enjoy this newsletter which is full of activity for the entire summer. Take special notice of the

growth of the golf, tennis and swim programs for the kids. Also, you’ll see some exciting social

and dining events that are sure to add excitement to the summer. I look forward to seeing you

around the club!

As we enter the later part of May the weather pattern is showing signs of breaking

out of what has been a somewhat dreary, rainy spring. Through it all, the staff has

diligently come in, put on the rain gear and got to work. We were able to clear all the

aging arborvitaes along the tenth tee and prepare the area for new plantings. We

have had excellent comments on this improvement. Also, a set of stairs were installed

to the side of the ninth tee for easier access getting up that hillside. Some necessary

drainage work took place on holes #6, and #7 while we wait patiently to get to the

bottom of a main drainage trunk line between holes #3 and #12. The area has just

been way too wet to attempt any work. We have had some trees cleared around the

13th tee to add more needed sunlight and air to the area. We feel this should help the

tee root better and thereby look and play better. We have upgraded some of the rail

fence that runs along the cart paths on Hole #1 and Hole #15. This was much needed,

functionally as well as aesthetically. We spent some extra time in the bunkers this

“Another new green opened for business this spr ing as the renovat ion of the 18th green

was completed”

• The best of junior golf in Rhode Island will take on the challenge here at the club

in July for the Rhode Island Amateur. This is the first time the club has hosted

this event since 1992 and we look forward to seeing the future of the game here

at Kirkbrae.

• We have the all-new Ladies’ Rhody Cup, a Ryder Cup-style event, to be played

versus the team from Potowomut in early September. Qualifying for Team

Kirkbrae will take place throughout the summer, with the best 8 players earning

their way onto the team.

• Then in October we will host the best in New England Amateur golf in the annual

Tri-State Matches, here at Kirkbrae for the first time in the event’s history that

spans all the way back to 1928.

• Plus, we have our normal calendar of member events and instructional programs

that are detailed later in this issue (and online) to keep everyone busy. And the

continued improvement of the golf course will once again continue this fall with

the regrading and levelling of tees on four holes: #5, #11, #16, #17.

So, as you can see, 2019 is going to be an impressive year here at the club. But how can

you make your golf year more impressive? Well, how about trying to play one more

round of golf every month?

If you can do that from June through October, you will have played 90 more holes of

golf, spent 20 or so more hours on the course and enjoyed the company of 12 or so

more people than you planned—not a bad season!! Plus maybe you’ll get the added

benefit of improving your game.

In today’s day and age everyone is super busy and running from Point A to Point B (and

back) all the time. We all know that carving out that little bit of extra time can be tough.

But maybe it’s not a full 18-hole round but two nines? Or even four practice sessions

during the month to work out the kinks?

Try to dedicate yourself to the cause of #onemoreround this season. Then when

Mother Nature starts throwing snowballs at you, you’ll have that many more memories

to help keep you warm!! Welcome back everyone and I hope to see you on the

course (for #onemoreround) soon!!

spring to try and address some issues concerning the consistency of the way they play.

All of this while working on our usual agenda to get playing surfaces ready for play.

So a big tip of the cap to my staff for forging ahead with improvements through some

difficult weather conditions.

Well another new green opened for business this spring as the renovation of the

18th green was completed. I was very worried over the winter as to how the green

had responded to what was very minimal work last fall because of all the rain. We

now know that all worry was for naught and the green had it’s opening on time. We

still have some tweaking to do but the green is playing great to this point. I believe

that this has been another big win for golf course playability at Kirkbrae. Architect

Mark Mungeum has been a great fit for the club. He takes in all opinions and ideas

on subject matter and has then been able to create some great new designs while

keeping with the original feel of the Kirkbrae we have come to love. No golf course

project is EVER embraced by 100 percent of its membership, but over the last 5 years

Mr. Mungeum, working with the Golf Course Renovation Committee, has come very

close to just such a scenario. It has been very rewarding and there is so much more to

do. Our current plan would seem to be the renovation of four more tee complexes this

fall. This is still in its very early stages but would seem to be this years’ path. As long as

we keep pressing forward as a club we will be moving in the right direction.

If I may touch on a personal matter. A lot of you have come up to me saying you

heard that I am retiring and that would be correct. I have approached the Board of

Governors with this subject during my contract renewal. I still have a few summers left

to go as the plan is for me to retire on August 31st, 2021. I am interested in an orderly

transition for the club and for my tremendously loyal staff. Two plus years goes by in a

blink. Sooooo…. You’re not rid of me just yet but it’s getting close..!! Have a great 2019

golfing season everyone.

2019 is set to be a very active season for the lady golfers at Kirkbare. I am pleased to

be welcoming the new and the returning members back for the 2019 golf season.

Our ladies’ groups have a lot of new faces joining us on the golf course and there are

many new programs added for this season.

There is a newly revised concept for the Ladies’ Nine Hole league, which is a great

program for those who are getting started in golf. There is also a clinic for beginners

called Get Up and Golf which will be held on May 17, 24 & 31 & June 7 from 5:45-

6:30pm. For lady golfers of all levels we have added a new lady’s clinic It is designed

to help lower scores. It is held on the course and will be held on Fridays from 5-7pm

on June 21, July 19, August 16 and September 13. More information on these new

programs will be available online, posted in the lady’s locker room or in the Pro Shop.

The biggest addition to the KWGA is The Rhody Cup Matches. It is a new 2-day match to

be played On September 5 & 6 at Kirkbrae against Potowomut. This is an exciting new

concept and information for qualifying can be found in your KWGA 2019 booklets.

As we move into the heart of the season, I am hoping for sunny days ahead to enjoy

our beautiful golf course and accommodations of our clubhouse!

More Golf?? Sounds Great to Me!!Looking for a way to get some extra golf in during the work week? We’ve got the answer for you- the Sunrise Golf League.

This is the fourth year for the 9-hole league for men that play on Tuesday mornings with a 6:30 am shotgun start. If you ask any of the teams from previous years, they will tell you it’s one of the best times they have all year at the club while also allowing them to do what we all want-play a little more golf!

The structure of the league is very similar to the Twilight League-teams of three players with two players playing per week in a 9-hole match. Due to time restraints, this league will be restricted to the first 16 teams. Also, pace of play will be of the essence-teams last season were almost always off the course by 8:30 am. This gives everyone enough time to grab a quick shower and be on the road to the office by 9am, and now you’ll have 9 holes under your belt!

League play will begin on Tuesday, June 4th and will run through the end of August with a three week postseason taking place from September through mid-October. Cost for the league will be $420 per team which includes weekly prizes, year- end awards and a closing dinner in October.

Wednesday afternoons beginning July 3rd, we bring our SNAG program for ages 3-6 years old back to the field to teach little ones the basics of golf.

This is an instructional program designed for 3-6 year olds that will use SNAG (Starting New at Golf ) equipment which focuses on creating a FUN atmosphere for those who are just beginning the game.

SNAG has been proven over the past few years to be one of the most successful, and most beneficial ways of teaching the game of golf to new players-both young and old. This year's class will once again be open to our 3-year old students, proving that you can never start too young to love the game!!

All sessions are on Wednesday afternoons, start at 2:30pm and last 35 minutes. All classes will be held in the field adjacent to the pool. Children do not need clubs to participate; clubs and other equipment will be provided.

If you have a child between the ages of 7-13, make sure they are part of the fastest-growing sports league in the

country—PGA Junior League Golf!!

Our teams of junior players will play a 7-match schedule versus other teams from throughout Rhode Island and southern

Massachusetts in an effort to see who truly has the best team of kids.

Open to players ages 13 & under (as of July 31st), the PGA Junior League format is 9-hole two- person scramble match

play. Each match is divided into 3 segments of three holes each, allowing for substitutions after each segment. This

allows up to 12 kids to play in each match, with each playing at least 6 of the 9 holes. At the end of the regular season,

each "league" (3-4 teams) sends an "all-star" team to compete at the regional level—just like Little League. The winning

regional team then heads onto the national finals in October.

Cost for this program is $325 per player for the season. This includes 7 matches and 16 practices. Practices will consist

of both on-course and on the range instruction and will start in early May. Matches will be held on Saturday afternoons

(both home and away) and will begin in mid-June.
