If you ask anyone who has attended Easter Conference over

the past few years to describe their experience, the memories and highlights would vary, but I’m confi dent that a common theme would emerge – the fact that Easter Conference has been a time of encouragement, fellowship and challenge to many over the years. Easter Conference 2013 was no exception.

Each day there were Bible studies and seminars. During evening meetings, there were many opportunities to hear of how God is working among the precious boys and girls in Ireland, Europe and

Africa; and to be made aware of the needs that exist in the ministry across the world.

‘Meltdown’ provided a chance for young people and young adults to relax in an informal setting after the evening meetings, to enjoy fellowship with others, often having the chance to chat informally with CEF workers and speakers from the main meetings. The Oreo and Crème Egg milkshakes were a big hit – although I did feel very sorry for whoever had to peel the foil off all those Crème Eggs!

The fun and fellowship at Easter Conference was not confi ned to the meetings and formal gatherings. Once again this year, accomodation was provided for young people and young adults in two hostels in Portrush. I thoroughly enjoyed being

part of the Young Adults’ Houseparty in Portrush Holiday Hostel. As a group we enjoyed plenty of fun, fellowship and laughter that continued well into the night (along with plenty of tea, buns and the occasional Chinese takeaway!).

I left Conference this year with a desire to listen to and obey God’s call on my life, a determination to use and develop the gifts that God has given to me and a renewed passion to reach the precious boys and girls of Ireland and further afi eld with the Good News of Jesus Christ. If you’ve never been to Easter Conference before, why not clear a space in your diary from Good Friday to Easter Monday 2014 and join us in Portrush? I have to warn you – it may change your life!

This year in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day every school in Northern Ireland and some schools

in the Republic of Ireland received three copies of ‘Unravel: the Mystery of St Patrick.’ Unravel is a new educational resource pack written by a group of Christian primary school teachers under the direction of the Multimedia Department. It contains lessons plans, songs, PowerPoint® presentation, a DVD and numerous resources for Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Most importantly it contains a clear gospel presentation surrounding the story of St Patrick. Specifi cally it teaches that God is living, loving and lasting. What an important message to send into the schools in our country.

As a primary school teacher it was a privilege to be involved in this project. We met regularly over a number of months to pray for and plan the project, allocating tasks to each member of the team. I was responsible for writing a Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 song and preparing the resources for Foundation Stage.

How encouraging it was to know that every school in Northern Ireland would receive three packs containing the good news of Christ. It was our prayer that the packs would be used in the classroom and that children

would hear something about God – how he is alive today, how he loves each one of them and how he is an eternal God.

The children in my own class enjoyed watching the DVD and making the craft activities. It is good they listened attentively to the story and to the truths of the gospel. As a teacher, the Unravel pack provided me with opportunities to talk about God that normally I would not have had in the classroom. Feedback from schools has been very positive so far. One Irish Medium school principal has even offered to translate the resource pack into Irish! How awesome it is when God opens doors we could never imagine!

Mark 10: 27 “And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

If you should walk past Seaview House in Kilkeel on Wednesday

3rd July you will see a strange sight. You’ll see young people talking to walls, to cars, to trees, even to the cat next door! What are they doing? They’re practising the Bible lesson that they have to present the next day and be evaluated on.

This year the course in Rossnowlagh runs from 22nd – 28th June and the one in Kilkeel from 28th June – 5th July. So far over 140 young people are booked on the various courses (Junior, Elementary and Advanced). It’s a busy week for them as they spend much time in the classroom learning all they need to go and present the Gospel to boys and girls. Subjects like ‘What is the Gospel?’, ‘Counselling’, ‘Teaching a Bible Lesson’, ‘Teaching a Memory Verse’, ‘Teaching and leading choruses’, ‘Follow up’, etc, are covered. The young people have some practicals to do, such as preparing and teaching a memory

verse and a Bible lesson. It’s quite a daunting prospect for many of them, especially when they’ve never taught before.

SOTC is a great week for the young people, despite all the hard work! They help and encourage each other as they pray and work together. As staff, we get alongside them and help them in whatever way we can. What do the young people think of it all?

“The teaching was amazing and I have learned so much!”

“Thank you for making the best week of my life.”

“It made me excited to get out there and teach and see souls won for Christ.”

“This training course was amazing and I have learnt so much that I want to follow through with it in my life.”

Please pray for all the young people taking the various courses this summer. Pray that they will take what they have learnt and go and put it into practise among the boys and girls of Ireland and beyond. Pray that God will use them in the salvation of children this summer.

When you send your child to school, what do you expect? Do you expect a teacher who has been

handed a book and told to get on with it, or one who has been trained and knows what he/she is doing? Obviously you expect someone who has been trained, so why should it be any different when it comes to teaching children the Word of God? If we want children to be effectively reached with the Gospel, then those who are reaching them need to be given the skills they require to do it. That’s were the Education Department comes in.

Rev J Overholtzer who founded CEF said, “From the beginning (of the Fellowship) the training of teachers has been of fi rst importance.” If we’re going to fulfi l our mission in Ireland of “Every Child, Every County, Every Day” then we need to train people. We offer training to Good News Club® Teachers and to Holiday Bible Club and 5-Day Club® helpers through classes in the local area. We have Teaching Children Effectively™ Courses (Level 1 for evangelising children and Level 2 on teaching the Christian child) which have 30 classes of 40 minutes each, so will run over a number of weeks. For young people helping with outreach in their summer holidays we have the Summer Outreach Training Course. We can also help churches with training for

their children’s and young people’s workers or outreach teams. We can offer a wide range of subjects and we’ll work to accommodate the church and what they would like training in.

I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in various training classes over the past few months. Here are some of the comments from those who attended:

“This is fantastic! I wish I’d learnt this 40 years ago!”

“I wish I’d learnt how to fi nd the truths in a passage of Scripture years ago – my teaching would have been so much better.”

“The difference in my daughter is visible. She was in the background helping at our children’s meeting. Now she is at the front teaching memory verses and Bible lessons. Being equipped with the right skills has given her a new confi dence.”

If we can help you or your church with training in any way, or if you are interested in doing a TCE™ Course, then get in contact with us. We would love to help you out in whatever way we can.

Family News• Our congratulations to two couples who have become parents!

Matthew & Therese Berry had a boy, James Michael and Matt & Adele Corke had a little girl, Darcie Erin. Congratulations also to the proud grandparents, Henry & Madeline Berry and Stan & Denise Beamish. Please pray for God’s blessing on these families.

• We welcomed another new candidate to the work at Easter - Emma Busby has begun her training period in the Lagan Valley area. She would value your prayers as she returns to Kilchzimmer in August to complete the CMLC.

• Also at Easter we marked the retirement of two couples who have faithfully served the Lord for many years with CEF: Kenneth & Mary Martin and Robert & Irene Lacey. Please remember them in your prayers as they settle into a more relaxed lifestyle!

• There have been a few changes in personnel at National Offi ce recently: Natalie Paterson, who was on placement from Bible School in Canada, returned home at the end of April and Emma McCullough began her maternity leave in May. We welcome Karen Crockford as Emma’s replacement in the shop and also Jill Crawford as an administrative assistant. Each of these folk would appreciate your prayers in their new situations.

• Philip Livingston has now completed his training period and been accepted as a missionary for Dublin. Please pray as he begins a period of deputation to raise his support for this ministry.

CEF® is the largest mission to children in the world, with a global work established in 181 countries of the world. At the centre of CEF’s ministry to children has always been a missionary focus through missionary stories, projects, etc. In Youth Challenge we continue, through our JYC’s and camps, to promote an interest and involvement in mission.

As God has used this in the lives of young people, many have become involved each year in camps, clubs and outreach weeks, in many different locations across Ireland and further away.

This year we have introduced some new short-term mission opportunities in addition to those which are regularly held each summer.

The overall name of the program is “Momentum,” as we seek to train, equip and support young people to ‘move out’ to reach boys and girls with the Gospel. We seek to do this in a Biblical way following the pattern of Acts 1:8 of working in our local areas, moving out to other parts of Ireland and the UK, to Europe, and to the uttermost parts of the world. As such, this summer there are teams of young people working in most areas of Northern Ireland, many areas in the Republic of Ireland with specifi c Momentum teams helping in Cork, Dublin, and Limerick. We will also have teams going to Livingston and London in the UK, to Lapland and Romania in Europe, and to St Kitts and Nevis, Uganda, Botswana and Swaziland.

Will you stand with these young people as they go and share the good news with others? Each young person is responsible for raising prayerful and fi nancial support for these teams. They are ‘asking God and telling His people.’ If you would like to receive prayer information for a specifi c team, or would like to help support one of the young people or help with material costs for a team, please contact the offi ce or colinhy@cefi reland.com.
