A brilliant example of diversification is the activities of some of the world’s biggest stars. With royalties plummeting thanks to music and movie streaming services, celebrities have cleverly branched out into non-entertainment related fields. George Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila, Jay Z’s D’Usse Cognac and Diddy’s Ciroc Vodka have all made their owners rich beyond expectation. Then there are others’ fragrances, headphones and fashion lines. These consumable lines are infinitely profitable, so you can see the merit in stepping outside of their usual offerings!

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

Introducing our very first Accurate NZ team member – Andrew Harris

With over 36 years of timber industry experience, Andrew brings a wealth of practical and technical knowledge across a number of industry segments such as timber processing, pallet and particle board manufacturing. After working in technical sales roles for tooling and machinery suppliers in the

Auckland region for the past 17 years, Andrew is excited to join Accurate and service both the North and South Island in our first foray across the Tasman.

Outside of Accurate, Andrew is an avid All Blacks fan who always prefers to be outdoors, hiking, hunting – you name it!

In our timber industry, it’s heartening to see diversification on the agenda across the country. As you’ll see in this edition, Melbourne’s Timber Revival transform recycled and reclaimed timber into high-value building materials. They also offer custom made new and recycled timber furniture. Over at Vicbeam, a great deal of hard work and skill went into the construction of massive 18-metre-long prefab glulam beams. In fact, their prefabricated products are changing the way they do business.

Examples of companies who didn’t diversify or rise to meet the changing landscape and got left behind include Kodak, Nokia, Motorola and Blockbuster Video.

The importance of cleaning your machines

in warmer months by Chris Roberts

The warmer weather is a critical time to flush out your grinder because bacteria are more prevalent when the ambient temperature is higher. You certainly don’t want your workers to be exposed to this toxic material as inhaling it can be detrimental to their health. That’s not in their best interests, nor that of your business.

• All machines that require fluids to operate should be drained and/or flushed before any prolonged periods of no operation.

• Spray a light coating of INOX or similar to any surfaces that are susceptible to rust or corrosion.

• Accurate Grinder Cleaner can be added to the grinder on the last day of operation (i.e. Friday) so that it doesn’t affect your production at all. Then simply drain and flush.

• Now it’s time to add Accurate Grinding Coolant which helps ensure your knife steel doesn’t overheat. We recommend that you change your coolant regularly (depending on workload).

The two main tools you rely on for productivity and prosperity in your timber processing business are your workforce and your machines. Keep your machines in top condition and you ensure the health and safety of your team at the same time.

We couldn’t let an edition of our magazine go by without bringing you an example of an outrageously magnificent timber installation. We give you, the Harbin Opera House in China’s untamed, icy north. Its arresting exterior was designed to seem as though it was sculpted by the wind and water whilst the interior, with its rich, warm Manchurian ash and ethereal, curved lines renders visitors utterly speechless. The main theatre (pictured) was designed to evoke the interior of a musical instrument.

Victorian glulam specialists Vicbeam have been supplying high quality glulam products since 2003. The company has specialised over the years in supplying both the merchant and wholesale network with ‘job lots’. Originally hailing from a building background however, the Wallace family saw the opportunity to diversify and provide a pre-fabricated solution. This often involves partnering with architects, builders and engineers from the conception stage of a project. Today, Vicbeam is a sought-after supplier of prefabricated glulam beams, manufactured to builders’ and architects’ detailed specifications.

Tim Wallace explained that the opportunity to communicate directly with the end customer has made an enormous difference to operations. “Having communication with the major players at design stage has made for great efficiencies and produced beautiful outcomes. We have been able to partner with our clients at ground level to provide bespoke, expert prefab solutions for the most complex requirements.”

In recent times, Vicbeam have supplied an extraordinary 18-metre-long beam for San Clemente High School in Newcastle. The “monstrous” 1050mm x 260mm beam is among the largest in Australia, according to Tim. “The engineered connections of the portal frame were something we’d never attempted before and our whole team is extremely proud of the result.”

Vicbeam supplied another 18-metre-long beam (900mm x 130mm) to Kane Constructions for the Port Fairy Waterfront at Phillip Island. “This was another really complex job. All the angle cuts were compounded, and everything was done completely by hand; we don’t use CNC machines at all at this stage,” Tim says. “It’s quite a testament to the skill of our fabrication team.”

Tim says that adapting to the changing construction landscape is critical as techniques advance and consumers become more aware of the possibilities that are available. “We always have our eye on what’s new and we’re constantly innovating to stay ahead,” Tim says. “As for quality, because we prefabricate in-house, we have ultimate control over production and quality. Our customers know they can count on us for consistency and accuracy in everything they purchase from us.” Similarly, Vicbeam relies on Accurate for quality and customer service. “Accurate have always been there for us,” Tim explains. “You can get tooling from everyone but in our business, it’s about having good tooling. Average tooling produces average product and for us, the look of our product is what wins us the next job. Plus, Accurate’s level of service and fast delivery are things we greatly appreciate.”

At Timber Revival, ‘waste not, want not’ is not just a sustainability mantra, it’s a business opportunity and community service. Husband and wife team, Aaron McKirdy and Bree Anastasi get excited when they hear of a demolition happening in their midst. When the Melbourne Theatre Company’s production headquarters was coming down, Aaron couldn’t wait to inspect the salvageable timbers. Today, that timber – and the precious anecdotes around it – are for sale in Timber Revival’s yard. Bree uncovers the tales behind their reclaimed stock and creates provenance cards that inform and engage potential buyers.

Timber Revival’s growing band of enthusiastic customers don’t just shop there for the new, rough sawn and recycled timber and exquisite furniture. Aaron’s background as a furniture designer and craftsman amply equips him with deep insight into working with timber as an aesthetic, multi-sensory medium. Add to that, Bree’s capacity to speak the lingo and infuse customers’ experiences with her own warmth and passion and you have a winning formula. Aaron and Bree function as professional yin and yang across the office, yard and floor, and customers benefit tremendously from their combined perspectives.

Bree says Timber Revival enjoys a similar relationship with Accurate. “I love that Accurate has a number of women on their team; timber machinery and tooling has traditionally been a male dominated industry so it’s really refreshing to speak with other women.”

The company has attained FSC, PEFC and Responsible Wood certification, the holy trinity of sustainability accreditation. “We’re very conscious of making choices that are aligned with our beliefs and the majority of our customer base shares them.” Bree explains.

“Also, we’re an advisory service as much as a timber supplier,” Aaron says. “Whatever they’re looking for and whatever they need to do with it, we have the products and the answers. Someone might enquire about one product but once we have a conversation, they often end up purchasing four or five different elements for their project.” Melbourne-based Timber Revival specialise in capturing a story about recycled and reclaimed Australian hardwoods and adding new chapters. The story continues for recycled Blackbutt flooring used in the refurbishment of Williamstown Town Hall. Recycled Messmate blend from the Tottenham Munitions Stores was repurposed for tables and the large curved bartop at the Victoria Hotel, Footscray.

Hyne Timber, manufacturer and distributor of high volume industrial, structural and engineered timber products have announced a major expansion of their Glue Laminated Timber (GLT) plant in Maryborough, Queensland. The move has involved the purchase and installation of 14 new machines supplied by Stirling Machinery, part of the Accurate Group.

With the rise of the use of GLT in Australia for an increasing array of construction types including high-rise, Hyne Timber identified an opportunity to increase competition in this market. The simultaneous emergence of Stirling, the machinery arm of the Accurate business, along with support from the Queensland Government Jobs and Regional Growth Fund meant Hyne could build on their long-standing relationship.

“Increased GLT manufacturing capability has been on our horizon for a number of years, to increase our volume and delivery speeds,” says Jon Kleinschmidt, Hyne Timber’s CEO.

“Given the size of the investment, we needed to be sure of the best service delivery and support, from machine selection and customisation to installation and beyond.

“We look forward to working with Stirling and Managing Director, Craig Honeyman to bring this project to fruition over the next few months.” Mr Kleinschmidt concluded.

Hyne Timber’s investment involves a complete automated, state-of-the-art machinery solution from Stirling. Accurate tooling will support all machines well into the future, providing a fully integrated experience over the lifetime of the hardware.

Stirling Machinery’s Managing Director, Craig Honeyman says the Hyne Timber project scope was the biggest yet for Stirling. “We’re really excited to have been chosen for this project because it validates our capacity as a serious contender in the machinery market,” he says. “But at the heart of Stirling’s value set is helping the industry thrive. In small centres like Maryborough, when a company expands to the degree that Hyne Timber have, it has tremendous flow-on effects for employment and the economy of the region. We’re really proud to have helped facilitate this growth for them.”

The Hyne GLT project is expected to be completed by mid-2019.
