Cycle Pub, presented by the Old Mill DistrictBend residents love beer and bicycles! The combination of these two pastimes is a multi-person bike riding and beer friendly Cycle Pub presented by the Old Mill District. Look for Cycle Pub in the Old Mill District, around town making stops at local breweries or at the Les Schwab Amphitheater during a summer concert. This 16-person cycle will get you around to all the hot spots in Bend, simply through the pedaling power of the riders.

Cycle Pub has a twin-tap beer tower, beautifully finished wooden bar, convertible top, built-in ice chest and great lighting. A rocking sound system and an iPod docking station on board the Cycle Pub adds to the fun. Local resident James Watts poured his heart into this unique project to bring Cycle Pub to Bend.

The Cycle Pub can be booked for two or three hour pre-set tours for special events or private parties as well as specific routes or an entire day. Cycle Pub fits up to 16 people and riders can bring their own beer, wine, coffee or snacks aboard to fuel the crew. Tours can be customized to accommodate families and non-beer drinkers (gasp!) as well.

Visit www.cyclepub.com for more information.

Ah, Summer! Flip Flops, Sunshine and Beer

10 Barrel Brewing Summer Ale This brew is so light and smooth, it’s actually available all year long. You can taste the craftsmanship in this easy drinking ale with

a blend of Cascade and Sterling hops and finished with a touch of Honey malt to balance it out. This is a great introduction if you are new to the world of Craft Brewing. For established craft enthusiasts, 10 Barrel Summer Ale is a good reprieve from overly hopped and overly malty alternatives.

Bend Brewing Company Paulina Pale AleA light American Pale Ale with a smooth finish brewed right on the Deschutes River a few

times during each summer. Perfect for a sunny Central Oregon day on this downtown brewer’s stellar patio, this amber-colored ale has a lasting beige head with a balanced citrus hop profile.

Boneyard Beer Wit ShackThis classic style Belgian witbier hits the palate with a light, crisp effervescence that quenches that summer thirst. Made with wheat, plus a bit of coriander and sweet orange

peel, this smooth beverage has a low bitterness and pours an opaque white — just right for capturing the sunlight.

Cascade Lakes Brewing Paulina Lake PilsnerThis classic German style Pilsner is light straw in color and well-hopped with

European noble hops. It is fermented to a low final gravity which leads to a beer with few residual sugars to create a dry crisp lager with higher hop-bitterness and aroma than your typical American Lager.

Deschutes Brewery Twilight AleThe crisp effervescence of this highly sessionable

ale is perfect to enjoy just as the sun sets during those extended summer evenings. This straw-colored ale has a vigorous hop essence and a subtle, wafer-like body that complements a unique blend of four hops and malts: Cara-Pils and Carastan malts with the late addition of whole flower Amarillo, Cascade and Tettnang hops. Make some magic happen with a beer that’s brewed just for the long, lazy days of summer.

McMenamin’s Copper MoonThis beer has a bit more malt quality and hop character than most other summer seasonals, giving rise to a refreshing, flavorful

beer style. On top of that, all of the malted barley used in every batch of Copper Moon is organically grown and malted. The outcome is a smooth, flavorful summer pale ale.

Silver Moon Brewing’s High Plains Heffe

A traditional German-style Hefeweizen, this refreshing summer brew pours an inviting butterscotch yellow with a nice white head and good lacing. With a lively flavor that’s been described as malty with some citrus and fruit, the finish is dry and crisp — perfect solution for a hot summer day.

Three Creeks Brewing Company’s Golden Stitches AleThis easy drinking, Summer Session Ale is

made with pilsner malt to ensure a light, golden, effervescent body and a touch of Acidulated malt that adds a pleasant, crisp zest on the pallet. Blended with small amounts of Sterling and US Golding hops, the result delivers just the right balance for a delightful summer Quaffer.

What would summer in Bend be like without a fresh, crisp summer ale to enjoy around the campfire or the barbeque? Luckily for us in Central Oregon, we have an abundance of craft beers to choose from, all brewed here locally — taking a bit of the Central Oregon sunshine and bottling it up to enjoy during all the best

summertime activities.

Shakespeare’s Globe London Cinema SeriesNCM Fathom, Globe Theatre and Arts Alliance Media present a four part series of Classical Shakespeare plays in movie theaters nationwide this summer and fall. Captured in 2010 from the internationally renowned Globe Theatre in London each play starts at 7:00 p.m. (runs approximately 3 hours) and tickets are $15. Each performance will include a historical perspective on the Globe Theatre, the reconstruction process, the work of the Globe Theatre today, and a behind-the-scenes look at each production with interviews from the actors and creative team involved.

Henry IV Part 1- August 1Henry IV Part 1 is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays, featuring the opportunistic, Sir John Falstaff. The plot shifts back and forth between the troubled realm of Henry IV’s court and the vulgar world of the tavern in which Sir John Falstaff presides over his group of rascals and is joined by the fun-loving Prince Henry or Hal. The plot encompasses rebellion and the struggle for power. Prince Hal and Sir John Falstaff join the fighting and Prince Hal kills the rebel Hotspur. The play concludes with King Henry IV and Prince Hal leaving for Wales to confront rebels. Henry IV Part 1 is second in a series of four plays that make up Shakespeare’s major tetralogy. It continues the saga that begins with King Henry IV’s seizure of power in the play Richard II and the coming of age of Prince Henry.

Henry IV Part 2 – August 18Henry IV Part 2 is a popular historical play by William Shakespeare and believed to have been written between 1596 and 1599. This play picks up where Henry IV Part 1 ended and focuses on Prince Hal’s journey toward kingship. There is much confusion when the fighting is over but the royalists defeat the rebels. More fighting ensues and once again Sir John Falstaff appears in the plot encouraging Prince Hal in his boisterous ways. The rebels are finally defeated and peace reigns. However, King Henry IV dies and Prince Hal becomes King Henry V. Prince Hal realizes he must change and becomes a sober and solemn person. Sir John Falstaff is banished from Prince Hal’s court and is lectured to also change his wayward ways.

Henry VIII- September 15Henry VIII is a popular historical play by William Shakespeare. This work is based upon the life of Henry VIII of England and the turbulent events and people who were important in his life. The play concentrates on his first two wives, Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. King Henry VIII was a proud and willful monarch who defies Rome’s ban on divorce to marry Ann Boleyn. Cardinal Wolsey the Powerful Lord Chancellor of England and accomplished politician attempts to bend the Catholic Church to the king’s wishes.

July 3: MOsley WOttaMOsley WOtta combines hip-hop, rap and poetry into their live performance as a full live band and also with solo performer Jason Graham. MOsley WOtta has played at numerous venues around town, including Bend Roots, and won Bend’s The Last Band Standing in July 2010. Jason’s quick lyrics, high energy and witty phrasing easily draw you in. Get ready to bounce up and down to the beat in the afternoon sun. We look forward to seeing MOsley WOtta on stage with newest band member Stephanie Slade, whose strong rock vocals are not to be missed and a great addition to the band’s sound. The band name is a play on words “mostly water,” and Jason is often heard saying from the stage, “I’m Mosley Wotta and so are you.”

July 17: The GreencardsThe Greencards are part of the progressive bluegrass “newgrass” sound that draws from a wide variety of musical influences — Irish traditional music, gypsy, rock, folk and Latin sounds. The Greencards have toured extensively, including appearances at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Austin City Limits, Lollapolooza and MerleFest.

The Greencards toured with Dylan and Willie Nelson in 2005. They earned the Americana Music Award in 2006 for Emerging Artist of the Year and received Grammy nominations in 2008 and 2010 for Best Country Instrumental Performance.

The band was formed in Austin in 2003 and was initially composed of two Australians, Kym Warner on mandolin and Carol Young on bass and vocals, and Englishman Eamon McLoughlin on fiddle. McLoughlin left the band in 2009 and was replaced by Tyler Andal, a fiddle player from Tennessee. Carl Miner, originally from Oregon, joined the group in May 2010, playing acoustic guitar. The Brick Album will be released in June 2011. The Greencards played the Sisters Folk Festival in September 2007.

July 24: Franchot ToneFranchot Tone is an Oregon-based singer-songwriter. His sound is a mix of vintage reggae and dub, pop-rock, funk and soul. His best-known work is as a member of the Culver City Dub Collective, the critically acclaimed band he co-founded with Adam Topol, best known for his work as Jack Johnson’s drummer.

Over the past several years, Tone has built an impressive resume both as a performer and as a studio wizard. He has worked with Garth Brooks, Jack Johnson, The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ben Harper and more. Locally, Franchot Tone is also a collaborator and producer with Reed Thomas Lawrence and a composer for Rage Films.

July 31: David Mayfield ParadeDavid Mayfield brings energy, playfulness and great bluegrass songs to each performance. He’s the former bass player for Cadillac Sky and earned a Grammy nomination as the producer and engineer of a southern-gospel record in 2009. He’s had several appearances playing on the Grand Ole Opry stage with country singer Andy Griggs. While playing bass with his sister, Jessica Lea Mayfield, he met Seth and Scott Avett who invited him to join them on stage for performances at Bonnaroo and MerleFest in 2010. These numerous performances, including playing on NPR’s Mountain Stage, have earned him a growing reputation as a musician. The band is based out of Nashville.

His new album, The David Mayfield Parade, debuted in January 2011 and includes lush string arrangements to alt-country ballads. The Avett Brothers sing and play on several songs on the record. Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons called it “an absolutely brilliant record.” Don’t miss the Dave Mayfield Parade and new songs I Just Might Pray and Breath of Love from the debut album when they come to Bend. A lucky few locals saw the band play at McMenamin’s Old St. Francis School in March 2011.

August 14: Uncle LuciusUncle Lucius is Southern rock combining blues, country and gospel music. All four members grew up in different parts of Texas, each finding their own way to Austin in an attempt to pursue music full time. The band includes Kevin Galloway on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Hal Vorpahlon on bass, Mike Carpenter on lead guitar and vocals, and Josh Greco on drums and percussion. Their second album, Pick Your Head Up, garnered critical praise in 2009. The band’s live shows have earned them an ever-growing audience for their high energy experience while on stage. Uncle Lucius has played renowned venues throughout the U.S. including B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City, Maple Leaf in New Orleans and numerous locations in Austin such as Threadgill’s World Headquarters, The Continental Club and Antone’s. Don’t miss the unruly hair!
