A Safe Harbor where

the Light of Christ Jesus directs all who are adrift to anchor themselves in Him.

Creating Connections

Through Christ

Reflections from Pastor Bruce

POIEMA

First, read Ephesians 2:1-10.

As I was looking over this text I got to thinking about the

power of a word, or words—whether written or spoken. In

one of his autobiographies, Frederick Buechner, a Presbyteri-

an minister and author, recalls his introduction to his English

teacher Mr. Martin who instilled in him a love for words. “…

[T]hrough Mr. Martin [I learned] that words not only convey

something; [but] that words have color, depth,[a] texture of

their own, and the power to evoke vastly more than they

mean; that words can be used not merely to make things

clear, make things vivid, make things interesting and whatev-

er else, but to make things happen inside the one who reads

them or hears them (Sacred Journey, p.68).

The book of Ephesians is an epistle packed with the pow-

er and mystery of God’s grace. When Paul comes to what

we now call ‘verse 10’ he scribbles you are God’s workman-

ship, we are what God has made us, God creates us in Jesus

Christ—depending on your version of the Bible. Paul chooses

one word to “make things happen inside the one who reads

them or hears them”: and that word is poiema. If you hear

the echo of the English word “poetry,” you’re on the right

track. Poiema: God’s workmanship—how and who you are

created to be.

Through the marvelous richness of God’s grace, you have

not only been called to new and everlasting life in Jesus

Christ, but have been created with incredible gifts to serve

the Kingdom, to usher in the fullness of the reign of God. As

believers in the Lord Jesus, we are God’s work, a new crea-

tion brought about by God’s power alone. (continued…)

As a reminder of the PCPH Women's Missions,

we are asking your support for greatly need-

ed non-food items for F.E.A.S.T. Many of the

requested items are those that cannot be

purchased with food stamps.

As previously suggested, you can purchase

many of these items at Dollar General or

Dollar Tree at a nominal cost.

For the month of June we are asking for toilet tissue and paper towels.

PCPH Women’s Missions

F.E.A.S.T. Items for June

are canned fruit.

We are God’s people, God’s poiema. We have been given

the knowledge of the great love that God has poured out for us

and to us.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Shalom,

Bruce

For Haiti With Love has been serving Haiti since the winter

of 1968 - 1969, and has been working with PCPH since

approximately 1985. FHWL is located in Cap Haitien in North Haiti,

but it can care for people from all over Haiti with burns, cuts, and other kinds of injuries. Below

are some notes and occurrences from FHWL in 2017.

In 2017, 2116 injuries were treated in the clinic at FHWL. 1693 of those injuries were burns to

adults and children alike, many related to cook fire accidents. More burn cream and

bandages are always needed, along with other First Aid supplies. The burn clinic is as busy

as ever in 2018.

One community outhouse was finished in July 2017. A second outhouse was started in Oc-

tober 2017, but has not been completed yet due to a lot of rain and need for more fund-

ing.

On Christmas Day 2017, 500 children got gifts and every girl got a dress as well. Some of

these gifts were donated at the “Christmas in August” event in our area.

In September 2017, backpacks with school supplies were given to the school children

Hurricane Irma spared Haiti the worst, but a lot of rain caused flooding which washed a lot

of trash down the mountains. The trash piled up at the bottom causing a breeding ground

for mosquitos. At least one other hurricane affected Haiti in 2017.

There has been increased hunger from crop loss due to the heavy rains from Irma. FHWL

has tried to help as many people as they could with gifts of rice and beans. Some people

have lost their jobs due to the storms.

There is no system in place for good water for the people. Rivers are full of trash. At FHWL

the water pipes they have in place were broken due to non-stop rains for 2 days in Novem-

ber 2017, but the pipes were repaired.

To put things in perspective, many houses in Haiti are the size of an American guest room,

with no electricity or indoor plumbing. Diseases spread easier in small living areas.

Groups are still making mission trips to Haiti to help in the clinic, make repairs to buildings,

help build new homes or help with other needs.
