Dear Parents/Carers This year has seen a culmination of much hard work towards a variety of additional ratifications of our progress in many areas of school life. We started the year by achieving Values Mark, having undergone a rigorous assessment by Mrs Di Thomas (ex-Head Teacher at Greenfield Lower School). We are proud of this achievement and want everyone to enjoy ‘living the values’. Mrs Lynne Baker, our Leader of Art, along with colleagues put in our application for Artsmark Silver (covering art, fabric technology, dance, drama and music) and we were thrilled to read that we had been successful in early June. We tried hard to get publicity for this great achievement, through the Press Office, but without success. Our cross-curricular arts work has been particularly productive with a number of events, such as Arts Enrichment Week, led and principally organised by Lynne Baker, Alison Wood (at Key Stage Two) and Lyn Lyman. The ‘Relatively Artistic’ exhibition was a great success and we look forward to a repeat of this next academic year (keep those budding artists, potters and jewellers going please).

In the last two years we have been expanding our ‘Global Citizenship’ with two days of a variety of learning opportunities every Autumn Term. Miss Rachel Truscott is now a British Council Ambassador and last year represented Arnold School in Belfast and Prague. This, of course, led to us auditing our local, national and international school and community links. We have been awarded foundation International School Status

and await the decision about the ‘next level’, when we will be recognised for our work with other countries through history and the School Council. Our e-twinning and ‘blog’ are interesting ways to stay in touch.

Then there was the small matter of a long-awaited Ofsted Inspection, just before we finished this academic year. It is ‘still under wraps’ at the moment as the HMI [Her Majesty’s Inspector] has to have the report ‘quality assured’ before it is released (to check that the grades the Team gave correlate with the written report). As part of our school self evaluation we have

to complete a very comprehensive document called a ‘SEF’ and the Inspection Team came to Arnold in July to check that we were ‘making the grade’. We judged ourselves to be a ‘good school with some outstanding characteristics’ and I can tell you that not only did the Inspection Team corroborate our findings but ‘upgraded’ two categories from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding.’

We look forward to sharing the full report together with a letter from the Team to pupils in the very near future. It will, of course, be available on the school website and a copy will be provided for all parents of Year Eight pupils who will, by the time the report has been published, have left our school [it takes three working weeks for publication apparently and so this will ‘knock’ the result in to next academic year unfortunately]. We have continued to develop our links with the local community of Barton through our Barton 10K Run (with 5K for those who can’t go quite so far) and I would like to thank Ady Wadsworth for organising so much of this high-profile event – without his specialist knowledge and commitment we would be totally lost. As usual, the Canon Reverend Graham Newton, of St. Nicholas’s Church, has

been a regular visitor to school for our assemblies and we have agreed to take part in the ‘Our Village’ event in September (the School Council are planning two stalls). Very recently our Rock Band played a ‘live gig’ at the church fete and were much admired for their commitment; many people commented about how enjoyable the performance was.

The new building for Administration Services is beginning to reach the final ‘planning’ stages and we look forward to the pre-start works getting under way in December 2010 with a building start of January 2011 and completion in July 2011. In addition, we received funding to support our access initiative so that we will have a ‘wet room’ and disabled toilet area in the Year Five block. The completion of a lift to the three storey (older) block will mean that all floors will be accessible for children with additional mobility needs.

Our children are very precious, irreplaceable and unique. I am pleased to be able to report that Ms Denise Douglas is going off for a while on maternity leave (baby due in August) and that Miss Cooke had her baby boy safely in June (Amari) and intends to return to us soon. Mrs Tredwell has finally been able to adopt her daughter,

Rubie, and will be back at school in July 2011. Mrs Lucy Gorick has been appointed as Key Stage Three Assistant Leader of Mathematics at an Academy in Milton Keynes and we wish her well for the future. Mrs Doreen Thakoordin is retiring and Miss Kate Middleton moving to Leicestershire. We will also say goodbye to Miss Lucy Hubble and Mrs Helen Payne two of our Teaching Assistants (Learning) who are all going off to train to be teachers!

In addition, Vicky Robinson and Charlotte Lack, support staff from our Science Department are on their way to University to train to become teachers also. We thank them for their dedication to our school and the work that they have done with our young people.

With leavers, there are also new staff to introduce to you all: Mrs Stephanie Langton will be joining our Mathematics Team and Ms Claire Kimber will be taking the place of Ms Douglas whilst she is away. Miss Angela McGill is joining Arnold as our Leader of Science, with many years of experience as a Science Consultant for Bedford Schools. Miss Jaimie Scobie has ably taken on the role of P.E. teacher during Miss Cooke’s absence and Mr Tfifha is acting Leader of P.E. Mr Kevin Dilley will be joining our Science Technician Team and Mrs Naomi Hinkins is going to take on the role of Administrative Assistant to the Leaders of English and mathematics. Mrs Jenny Alcock will be joining our pastoral care support team to help in the classroom. Mrs Lorraine Horan has been ably ‘standing in’ with a variety of roles during staff absence because of maternity leave and I am pleased to report that she will continue her work with us part time. Mrs Jackie Vaughan has kindly agreed to take on the responsibility of supporting our Year Eight Active Listeners. Miss Nicola McMahon is getting married and will return to us as Mrs Nicola Gauntlett. Miss Reeve and Mrs Rogers are also getting married this summer, as is Mr Tfifha. Congratulations to them all. During the year a variety of events have been held to celebrate the developments within the Harlington Area Schools’ Trust and I was delighted to be able to attend the culmination of this work on Monday 12th July where each school was able to present their work to parents, Chairs of Governors and invited guests (including David Jackson from the Department for Education’s Innovation Unit). One Chair of Governors had posted an email to us all to record his feelings on the evening before I had even managed to get home: “I attended this evening’s Learning Futures Celebration. I was very, very impressed with what I saw – the quality of the performances and the obvious commitment, enthusiasm and enjoyment of all the students and staff involved. Now I really understand what Nick Martin from Harlington Upper

School has been talking about in all the Trust Board meetings. A lot of hard work has gone into making this happen and the students have learned a great deal. So well done to everybody involved. Fantastic!” It really was a pleasure to watch all the children talking about their learning and showing off their skills.

I know that I need to stop writing when I get to the end of three pages of A4 typing (and I’ll get a reprimand from Mrs Sides and Mrs Yates about it too) but I have to finish with a ‘thank you’ to all the fantastic

children and you as parents for making the partnership between school and home work well. So many of you ‘go the extra mile’ to support your child(ren) and I know that our staff are most grateful for that help. So many of you take the time to write or phone if there is a difficulty and similarly when we have got

something right. This was reported to us through the recent Inspection process (whilst the responses themselves remain confidential) and we want to continue to build on this supportive relationship. In order to achieve this, we need to know what events you would find helpful to keep you abreast of developments at school and in your child’s education.

We are releasing the email addresses for the Senior Leadership Team so that you can get straight to the point of contact when you need to get in touch. The usual phone messaging service and support from our fantastic team of Office Administrators

will still be there to take your call and leave a message for a teacher to get in touch but we realise that there is an increasing need for

electronic messaging to keep up-to-speed. Please look out for the email addresses elsewhere in the newsletter. Do keep a copy of the ‘dates for your diary’ handy and copy them across to your note book, kitchen reminder board or i-phone so that you know when our important events are taking place. We try very hard to keep the

dates ‘sacrosanct’ so that you can get to your child’s important events. The calendar is also on the front page of our school website: www.arnold.beds.sch.uk (along with loads of other information). LEAVE of ABSENCE REQUESTS

It is time once again to share aspects of our Behaviour and Attendance policy which specifically refers to the requests for time off during term time for holidays. Our policy is in line with our partner schools and where pupils have siblings in a partner school we always collaborate to ensure consistency of practice. The appropriate section states: • The school discourages family holidays in term time due to the impact on

pupils’ learning. There is no automatic entitlement for any holiday. A pupil will only be granted holidays in exceptional circumstances. Holidays of more than 10 days will be recorded as unauthorised.

• Holidays taken in September, May or the first two weeks of June, when

important testing takes place will be unauthorised. • Fixed penalty warnings will be issued if 10 or more sessions of

unauthorised absence are taken in a ten week period. • A Fixed Penalty Notice will be issued when a pupil has taken more than 10

days of holiday which has not been authorised by the school during their time at Arnold Middle School.

• Holidays taken in term time must be applied for at least four weeks before

the date of the holiday using the form available from the school office. If a request form is not completed the holiday will be unauthorised.

• Only the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher can authorise absence. It is always very difficult to set in place fixed penalty warnings and notices but these have been completed this year demonstrating the importance we place on pupil attendance and the written policy. BLAST OFF

This turned out to be a very successful production and all seats were sold out in advance. The pupils really excelled in their acting and singing and many individuals found they were able to perform in a way they had not thought possible.

SUMMER CONCERT

This term the Summer Concert took on a different format. We began with a stunning Art Exhibition organised by the school Art Department in celebration of our achieving Arts Mark Silver. The audience were provided with drinks and directed round the exhibition when they arrived while Mr &

Mrs Cadd provided background music “Palm Court style”. Then, when all the audience were assembled the formal concert started. There were performances from all the main ensemble groups plus a number of solo and small group items. This was also the last opportunity for the Yr 8 pupils to perform in a Middle School concert and we wish them well for the future.

BRASS BONANZA & FIDDLE FIESTA

At the beginning of July we sent a number of our pupils to the annual Brass Bonanza and they performed with their usual energy. Well done!

On July 13th many of our string players went to Harlington Upper School to take part in the Annual Fiddle Fiesta. These events are organised by Bedfordshire Music and provide a valuable opportunity for pupils to meet with colleagues from other schools and make music.

OTHER EVENTS

During this term the Rock Band have also performed at Barton Fete and had the opportunity to take part in the Rock Night organised by the Music Service at Esquires in Bedford. This was a brilliant opportunity to show case the group. C D Cadd Leader for Music

What childcare support would you need to get back to work?

Central Bedfordshire Council is asking parents and carers what support they

need to assist with childcare so they can work, or undertake training or study

that will enable them to work in the future.

There are four questionnaires in the consultation, which will be available via

the council’s website www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/

news/news/july-2010-press-releases/CC-assessment.aspx

Questionnaires are aimed at parents, childcare providers, childminders and

employers to feed into the report and the results of the consultation will guide

the Councils statutory Childcare Sufficiency Report for 2011. All responses will

be treated in confidence.

It will also help the Council to assess the demand and capacity for families with

three and four year old children to access their free pre-school Early Years

Entitlement.

Cllr Anita Lewis, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “Listening to the

views of parents, carers and childcare providers is an important part of helping

the Council to shape and plan its ongoing childcare strategy. So, if you want to

Science Event at Westoning Lower school Miss Robinson, Mrs Gunter, Mrs Wood and eight year 7 pupils Westoning Lower school on the 25th June to give a presentation on Carbon footprint. The day was a great success with all the children enjoying themselves and our year 7 pupils were a real asset. They watched cartoon videos, worked with solar panels and designed a 3D poster with icebergs stating it with everyone’s individual pledges. I would like to thank all the pupils involved and the teachers who made it such a fun and exciting day. Here are the pupils views of the day:

Chloe Corcoran - It was really great to go to Westoning for half the day. It was a good experience that I enjoyed very much. I would love to do something like this again. My favourite part was making the pledge icicles and snowflakes.

Emma Bush - I really enjoyed the trip to Westoning, the children were really nice and it was interesting to learn about global warming. I enjoyed playing games with the children and I think they enjoyed it too.

Robbie Large - It was a great experience and an amazing day. If I could do this again, I would. I would do it for a whole day! The year 4’s learnt a lot (and SO DID I!)

School Council

This year in School Council a lot of fundraising efforts have gone into buying the new trim trail. We have achieved this by having three non uniform days and a cake sale. We have also taken part in learning walks to help improve the school on certain aspects. We have been to governor and teacher meetings where we discussed and shared ideas for the future.

Next year we hope to have our new ideas up and running. In June we helped with tours for new staff for 2010-2011. By Conor Naylor & Amber Miller

E-Learning Event @ Henlow Middle School We were invited to take some pupils to participate in a student E-Learning Open Event at Henlow Middle School. Pupils were able to showcase what they enjoy and can do using the Learning Platform. Pupils were able to share one aspect of e-learning which they have found helpful and they demonstrated that skill to other students. External providers at the event were ‘E-ngage live’ who provide an E2BN sponsored programme of live sponsored sessions on a variety of subjects including Internet Safety, bullying and community issues. Encyclopaedia Britannica provide online content through the Learning Platform, ‘Lightbox Education’ provide software such as ‘Podium’ and ‘Textease’ and ‘2Simple’ provide a range of software. ‘Beat bullying provide online support and resources, including the new “Cyber mentors” website. This was a valuable opportunity for our pupils to collaborate with other pupils and we hope to attend a future event in the autumn term.

BARTON VILLAGE LIFE Shillington & District Camera Club (SDCC) now meets in Barton Village Hall on Monday evenings 8-10pm from September to May. The club is holding a digital photo competition as part of the Barton Festival with prizes for the top entries. Images can be taken on either a digital camera or a mobile phone. We are looking for photographs featuring all aspects of Barton village life. Your pictures can include shots of people, buildings or landscapes. In fact, anything that illustrates the attractions of the village. The competition is open to all residents of the village and is split into two sections:- • Under 18’s (on the closing date of the competition) • Over 18’s (on the closing date of the competition) First prize for both categories—a year’s membership to SDCC or an Amazon gift voucher worth £27.00. However, we are unable to accept entries from professional photographers, members of SDCC or members of their families. Entries will be judged by members of SDCC Exhibition Sub-committee and their decision will be final.

STRAWBERRY FAIR STALL!

On Sunday 4th July, a small group of Arnold pupils, with the help of Mrs Wood, set up and managed a stall at the local strawberry fair in Ramsey Manor’s playground and field. From 2-4pm people had the chance to view the many stalls on display. While this was all going on, the small group of Arnold pupils and Mrs Wood were working on their stall. Our stall was made up of a table, a display at the back and 5 boxes containing false items and also 1 electrical item. Players had to find the electrical item in 30 seconds per box. The prize was a haribo sweet from our huge box of sweets!

PE NEWS The Summer term has been a hugely eventful one at Arnold Middle School. With extra-curricular competitions providing a busy after school schedule for our pupils, a hectic lunchtime programme of school clubs and of course an eventful and enjoyable array of physical education lessons taking place.

It has been a hugely competitive cricket season and our year 7 and 8 teams have made real progress. With many of this year’s team being new to cricket it has been fantastic to see the commitment and development of our young players. This was especially evident when our year 7 team lost to a very experienced Parkfields team by a small margin.

The Year 6 cricket team has also been in action this year. With our turn-out so positive the decision was made to enter 2 teams into this years Kwik-cricket festival. That decision proved to be right, as both of our teams went through the group stages unbeaten, and met in the final. In a close game, our B team went on to win the game and qualify for the County finals.

At the County finals the boys gave another fantastic account of themselves and lost only 1 game. With time running out and the evening running late the organizers decided to send teams through on run-rate. This was unfortunate as we had played one of our main rivals to the trophy and subsequently went out to a team who we had already beaten. The boys were a credit to the school throughout the whole day.

This term has also seen our year 6 cricket teams enter the prestigious Bancrofts School cricket tournament in North London. With our A team in the main trophy an our B team in the Plate competition we played some fantastic cricket. Despite being new as a team, and having many new players, our A’s narrowly missed out on the final, losing their first game to the hosts before drawing and then beating the team that went on to win the trophy. Our B team also did fantastically well, winning all group games and qualifying for the final. Unfortunately the team we played had a fantastic county batting pair who scored a high amount between them. However, that was not going to deter our boys’ and we went on to score a high score ourselves. On this occasion we were not victorious but certainly gained so much from the

experience. As the only state school there, we gave a fantastic account against high level opposition.

With our year 5 and 6 team girls making the league finals, and our boys winning their last fixture. The future is bright for our athletics squad. With some fantastic individual performances most recently from Jessica Jones (Long Jump), Freya Green (1200m) and Jessica Pitts (600m) among many others, we have had a high percentage of individual winners this year. This success was also reflected in the District Finals where we took along a huge number of our athletes who had qualified from the heats. These events are always hugely competitive, so to have so many qualify was extremely pleasing. The pupils represented Arnold with great passion, and we had some fantastic results on the day, Conner Clifton came 2nd in the 100m and Alexander Bailey also came 2nd in the High Jump. Well done to all of you for your efforts, I hope the year 8’s continue with their athletics at their upper school.

The Rounders season is still in full flow. Having achieved the impressive feat of our year 5, 6 and 7 teams qualifying for the finals we look forward to those games during the last few days of term. Our Year 8’s meanwhile also deserve a special mention as they themselves were very close to qualifying for the final. Good luck to all the girls in the finals,

and congratulations on a fantastic rounders season. This year has also seen an array of other events taking place within the P.E. department, Conner Penning, Alex Bithrey and

Luke Charalambous represented the school in the Bedfordshire Schools Golf competition.

A number of our year 8 sports leaders officiated the recent KS2 Tennis Tournament for Lower School Pupils at Flitwick tennis Club and some of our young leaders will be helping out with

the Greenfields Sports Day in the coming days. We have also had a rock-it-ball coach come in to introduce the new game to some of our classes. We now look forward to our Multi-skills days which will see the sports of Rounders, Athletics, Brazilian Soccer, Crazy Catch and Rock-it-ball providing our pupils with an array of sporting opportunities. I’m sure the opportunities will provide great enjoyment for all of our pupils and great days of House sporting competition A huge congratulations to everyone who has shown such great commitment and passion to their sport at Arnold over this term and year.
