WHY HELLO THERE!

Hello Division 15!

For most of you, your school year is just about to begin, or maybe it’s

already started. I hope you all had a good summer, but now it’s time to gear

up for this service year to truly begin! Even though none of you were able to

attend ICON this year, if you keep reading you’ll hear ALL about it! As I said in

last month’s newsletter, I plan to be visiting clubs in the fall, so once you guys

get started please email me and let me know your meeting day/time and I will

come and visit for sure! If you have any questions you can find my contact

information on the back page of this newsletter & at the bottom of this page.

Didn’t submit all your paperwork? IT IS OKAY! TURN IT IN NOW! It’s better late

than never! I am currently planning a divisional for September (I haven’t

completely decided yet), and if all goes well we will also be having a Fall Rally

at Shaker High School with Divisions 15, 16, 17, and 18 in October, and if it isn’t

possible to combine, we’ll do one just our division or something. What is a Fall

Rally? A Fall Rally is usually held every year around October to train new

officers, answer any questions you have, do a service project, and hold an

advisor workshop. Keep reading and you’ll see messages from Immediate Past

International President Rebecca Riley, International Trustee Michelle Peterson,

and so much more! Also, let’s not forget our IP International Trustee Cecelia

Ferguson! Many of us got to spend time with Cece personally, which was a

total blast. For those of you that don’t know who she is, it’s really a shame

because she’s great too! Cece along with the District Governors from Ohio,

New York, and Capital (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) Districts came up with the

idea of a Pen Pal System between the 3 divisions that pair each LTG with an

LTG from one of the Sister Districts, same goes for all the other District Board

members. My Pen Pal’s name is Madison from the Capital District, and there

are no words for how amazing it is to have someone that is going through all

the same things, like when some of you never respond to emails! But she’s

great, and maybe if any of you were interested we could pair you with

someone of the same status from the Capital, so if that sounds like something

fun, let me know and I’ll talk to Madison about it! Good luck with everything,

and get ready because I plan to make this service year go out with a bang!

Yours Truly in Spirit and in Service,

Olivia Austin- LTG Division 15

EVERYTHING ICON!

This year’s International Convention was held in Washington DC, and by golly, it was

AMAZING! The workshops were phenomenal, and my favorite was probably “Meet your

International Board!” You guys would be amazed at how much time and effort goes into

being part of the IBoard, and it really reminded me that yes, they are on such a high level,

but they are just like us. These kids are normal high school students with big dreams, just like

you and me, including Immediate Past International President Rebecca Riley. I hope you

guys take a few minutes out of your busy schedules and listen to Rebecca’s Farewell

Speech, because it was phenomenal to say the least. There is so much to say about ICON,

it’s unbelievable. I made so many new friends, who are absolutely FANTASTIC! And that’s not

all, I attended this costume dance at ICON and oh my goodness, I was floored with some of

the costumes people came up with—check out the ICON PICTURES page to see more, OR

ADD ME ON FACEBOOK! Whether we were hanging by the pool with Alabama, walking

around D.C. with Cali-Nev-Ha (California, Nevada, Hawaii), or 6:00AM Swimming with the

Capital District, there was never a boring moment, not even when we were touring a

museum (crazy right?). That’s how ICON works, or in other words, according to IP LTG Sarah

Brady, “ICON is basically LTG on steroids”, and she was right. We would be standing in the

lobby of the hotel waiting to be picked up by our tour buses and out of NO WHERE you

would hear cheer’s from any district you could imagine, even the Bahamas! Next year’s

ICON is in ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA! HOME TO THE CALI-NEV-HA DISTRICT! You don’t want to

miss this, I hope you guys can attend ICON, and if you’re interested but not sure if you can

go, just start saving now, and decide later! ICON is a mesmerizing experience, and you will

not want to go home. Trust me. While I was at ICON I made the best friends anyone could

possibly have, had a blast walking around D.C., pin trading, swimming, and let’s just say my

roommates (Helen Wong, Hannah Song, and Lillian Xie) made for the craziest, and best

experience I’ve ever had. Whether it was Hannah scaring us all, Lillian screaming, Helen just

being Helen, and then there was Michelle Ung, who wasn’t technically our roommate but

basically lived in our room to the point we had to get a 4th key. Our very last day was packed

with workshops, and so much more, and we ended our ICON experience on Friday, July 6th

with the Dance to eliMiNaTe Maternal Neonatal Tetanus dance, where we said our final

goodbyes to all of our new friends, and at 12AM we loaded up our bus, and started the long

journey home. “Ohana means Family, and family means no one gets left behind or

forgotten”, and that’s really what we became in those 7 days, a family. We dreaded our

goodbyes, and many of us had friends waiting there with us in the lobby before we loaded

up to say goodbye one last time. Let’s just say, we had such an amazing time, and I hope

that you all get the chance to experience the amazing-ness of ICON in future years,

because it’s well worth it. I promise.

THE LTG COMPETITION AND UPDATES!

Hello Division 15 Clubs and Advisors!

This year I have created a Lieutenant Governor’s Divisional

Competition. There is a rare terminal disease out there that

affects the lives of children all over the world that has no

cure, no treatments, and is in no way preventable. This

disease is called Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL) or more

commonly known as Batten Disease. All diseases are

important, but this is one that has hit me personally. “The

Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA) is

the largest support and research organization in North

America with affiliates around the world. We provide

education, advocacy, family support services and research

funding to create a hopeful future for future for families

coping with Batten disease.” 47% of all proceeds go directly

to research, 33% to member services, 10% to fundraising, and

10% to Administration. On the next page you can read the

story of a little girl who is struggling with NCL, and see what

children with this disease battle everyday of their lives.

So what is this whole competition thing? Well, I would like to

try and raise some money for this organization to help some

of these kids who are struggling. So each club would

compete against the other clubs in the division to see who

can raise the most money for the BDSRA, and who completes

the most service hours working with children who need it the

most. You would be competing for multiple prizes &

certificates that I would hand out personally either at a

divisional at the end of the service year or at LTC during free

time. The exact prizes have yet to be determined, but I will let

you all know.

UPDATES: For spreading the word about Kaitlin’s Benefit, I

have awarded each club 5 Community Service Hours to

begin with, and thanks to Abigail Bishop from Saratoga

Springs Key Club for attending the benefit, Saratoga

Springs High School is currently in the lead with 15

Service hours. Thank you Abby! Keep up the good work

guys!

COMING TOGETHER FOR KAITLIN 2013 WHO IS KAITLIN?

Kaitlin is my world. She’s now 8 years old

(almost 8), and she has lived with Late

Infantile NCL since she was almost 3

years old. She was born completely

healthy, and then around Easter before

her 3rd birthday she became very

“clumsy”, and started having issues

speaking. On April 29th of 2009 she was

diagnosed with this terminal disease, but

through it all she hasn't given up. She

was a “go- getter” from day 1. Those

threats of becoming blind, bedridden,

tube fed and so much more, have now

become promises. She can’t control

anything in her body, and she fights to

make any sounds, but that moment

when she manages to smile, it’s a game

changer. Even though she can’t see,

can’t do anything on her own, and this

disease with no treatments is robbing her

of her life, she keeps fighting, and she

isn't giving up. Kaitlin doesn't have much

time left, and her life will soon be

coming to an end, but for others, it’s not

too late. We can still find a cure, some

kind of a treatment, or something, but

we can’t do it alone. Kaitlin has

changed my life, and she will forever

remain my hero, even long after she’s

gone.

Coming Together for Kaitlin Benefit

By: Abigail Bishop

The benefit was fantastic! It was very nicely

organized and had quite the turnout.

Unfortunately, I had to leave soon after I arrived,

but to those who could stay longer there was a

lot to do. They had a really neat bouncy house

and tattoos (I did get one of those) and cool

lottery prizes donated from local businesses. There

was quite a lot of food and a good singer playing

music. They scheduled a motorcycle event that

brought in a lot of bikers. They definitely did their

best to bring in as many people as they could,

even on Travers Day when everyone was at the

track. I got to meet the little girl the benefit was

for, Kaitlin, and she was such a sweetie. It was

amazing to talk to her and to have her squeeze

my hand. It’s fantastic that so many people were

there helping her family make her life the best it

can be. Her family and friends wore shirts with the

names that she would call them, and it was

precious. There was one very creative lady who

took pictures of Kaitlin and transferred them onto

wood ornaments and little charms. It was all so

wonderful to see these people come together for

her to raise money to make her life as

comfortable as possible. In a word, it was

amazing. Those who organized it worked very

hard and should feel very proud.

Congratulations!

As for my hobbies, I've played tennis for

as long as I can remember and have

been on the varsity tennis team for my

high school since freshman year and

am super excited about being captain

this year! I'm also really into art

(especially oil painting) and although

it's often what gets put on the back-

burner when things get really busy for

me, I try to at least make one finished

piece a month. When I have a day

completely free of academic & Key

Club responsibilities, my day usually

consists of sleeping in, playing some

tennis with my dad, grabbing lunch

with a friend, some knitting and

reading in the late afternoon, and then

a bonfire at night with a big group of

friends. Outside of Key Club, the

organizations I'm a part of are my

school's Student Advisory Board

(basically a big scary way of saying

staff-chosen student council) and

National Honor Society.

Favorite places: The airport, Barnes &

Noble, & Panera Bread

Favorite books: The Fault in Our Stars,

The Book Thief, The Glass Castle

Favorite bands: Hellogoodbye, Panic!

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM 2012-13

INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT REBECCA RILEY

Greetings, New York District Key Clubbers!

Today I address you for the final time as a now immediate-

past Key Club International officer. This past July in

Washington, D.C., my term as International President ended.

I passed the torch on to your new president, Raeford Penny,

and began to bask in the has-been life, happy to finally get

a bit of rest!

Your Lieutenant Governor, Olivia Austin, has asked me to say

a few words about my time as International President. After

travelling far and wide; pouring thousands of hours, heart

and soul, and blood, sweat, and tears into this organization;

and meeting hundreds upon hundreds of the most

incredible high school seniors I’ve ever known, the thing I’ve

taken away most of all is this: Never lose hope. As a leader

and a servant, sometimes it’s so easy to become

discouraged by failures, negativity, and bureaucracy and

forget the fact that we in Key Club are a group of amazing

student leaders who really can change the world. In fact,

we already do.

What is Key Club? Key Club is Key Clubbers and everything

that they bring with them: joy, passion, inspiration, love for

service, genuineness, positivity, and readiness to make a

difference. WE are Key Club, and Key Club is only as

powerful as we make it. Although I leave you now, I trust you

to make this organization all that it can and should be.

Thanks for all the great times as president, and thank you for

entertaining my address one last time. So long and keep up

the service!

Rebecca Riley,

Immediate-Past Key Club International President

Fun Facts:

-Rebecca is from Homewood,

Alabama and was a drum major

during her Senior Year at

Homewood High School.

- Rebecca loves flying

-Rebecca is driven by

“determination, grit, a big smile

and plenty of Southern sass.”

What's the most important lesson

you've learned in your life?

“Although I am by no means old

and wise yet, one thing I have

learned is that the best leaders

use their gifts and talents to their

advantage. There's no one

formula for leadership; instead,

you should develop your own

personal attributes into a

leadership style that is perfectly

suited for yourself and those you

serves.”

DISTRICT PROJECT: PEDIATRIC

LYME DISEASE FOUNDATION

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection that is spread through the

bite of one of multiple types of ticks.

Can it be prevented?

Yes, you can wear protective clothing such as hats, long

pants/socks, sneakers, or long-sleeved shirts. Also checking your

pets often for ticks can help prevent the tick from moving on to

you, or other people in your household. There is also a vaccine

available to prevent Lyme Disease.

How is it Diagnosed?

Lyme Disease is usually diagnosed by multiple laboratory testing,

but many times the tests come up negative when the patient

does in fact have Lyme.

How is it treated?

Antibiotics such as Doxycycline are the primary treatment.

What are the signs/symptoms?

Lyme disease can affect multiple body systems and produce a

range of symptoms. Not all patients with Lyme disease will have

all symptoms, and many of the symptoms are not specific to

Lyme disease, but can occur with other diseases as well.

On the next page you can read the story of a local teenager

in our own division who is struggling with Lyme Disease.

Page 11: Summer Newsletter

Lori Brownell is an 18 year old High School Student who had her

life flipped upside down because of Lyme disease. Unlike many

people you hear about on the news, this girl is local, for most of

you she is within 30 minutes of your own neighborhood, maybe

you’ve heard of her. Lori and I were good friends before she got

sick. She enjoyed playing the Piccolo, having snowball fights,

attending school football games, dances, hanging with friends,

and most importantly: Softball. More often than not, Lyme

disease goes undetected until things get bad. Lori, who was 16

at the time, was 1 of 19 other people in Upstate New York (Most

of the children attend LeRoy High School) to be affected with

this “medical mystery” as doctors called it. It all started at a

concert where Lori randomly passed out, then the black outs

became more frequent, and shortly after Lori started having

uncontrollable speech and body movements, or “tics” and

other Tourette-like symptoms, but something didn’t match up.

The medicines weren’t working, and her tics kept getting worse.

Lori was just starting her Junior year of high school, but what she

didn’t know is that she wouldn’t be able to return to school that

year. With all the doctor’s appointments, new medicines, and

all her other “issues” with this medical mystery, Lori was unable

to return to school. So she began tutoring and continued her

schooling from home. Months later she was finally tested for

Lyme’s Disease, and she was finally given a diagnosis that

made sense. She had Lyme’s; doctors say that Lori has

probably had Lyme’s for about FOUR YEARS, and that it wasn’t

uncommon for Lyme’s Disease to go undetected for so long.

Lori still can’t attend school, and missed graduating with her

class, but if all goes well she will be graduating this spring from

Corinth High School with the class of 2014. Lori is getting better

though, and she finally completed her Junior Year and is

looking into Online High School classes to help her graduate

faster.

So why should you consider fundraising for the Pediatric

Lyme Disease Foundation? Organizations like the Pediatric

Lyme Disease Foundation help children and teens like Lori

every day. Lyme disease is not just something that just happens

in some far off place to people we’ll probably never meet, and

there’s nothing you can do about it, but it’s happening RIGHT

HERE, RIGHT NOW, right under our noses, and we can do

something! Lori needs our help, and so do so many other kids

that may live right down the road, or even across the country,

and this foundation can do just that. “Help us help them.” We

can do this guys, I know we can.
