BERLIN (Reuters) - by Gareth Jones

Adolf Hitler personally intervened to protect a Jewish man who had been his commanding officer during World War One, according to a letter unearthed by the Jewish Voice from a German newspaper. The letter, composed in August 1940 by Heinrich Himmler, head of the Nazis' feared paramilitary SS, said Ernst Hess, a judge, should be spared persecution or deportation "as per the Fuehrer's wishes." Hess, a decorated World War One hero who briefly commanded Hitler's company in Flanders, worked as a judge until Nazi racial laws forced him to resign in 1936. The same year he was beaten up by Nazi thugs outside his house, the paper said. In a petition to Hitler at that time, Hess wrote: "For us it is a kind of spiritual death to now be branded as Jews and exposed to general contempt." Hess and his family moved for a time into a German-speaking area of northern Italy but were then forced to return to Germany where he discovered Hitler's protection order had been revoked. He spent the rest of World War Two doing slave labor but he escaped death partly thanks to the fact that his wife was a Gentile. Hess's sister died in the Auschwitz death camp but his mother managed to escape to Switzerland. Hess remained in Germany after the war, becoming head of the Federal Railway Authority based in Frankfurt. He died in 1983. Hess's daughter Ursula, now 86 and still living in Germany, told the paper in an interview her father had benefited from a chance encounter with another WWI comrade, Fritz Wiedemann. He became Hitler's adjutant and used his influence to win concessions for Hess, she was quoted as saying. Ursula Hess also recalled her father saying that as a young corporal in World War One, Hitler had had no friends in their regiment and had kept himself very much to himself.

I ’ve usually thought of the summer months as a slow period for stamp collecting, but not this

year. We have a busy schedule highlighted by STAMPSHOW coming to our backyard. I’m looking forward to the big national APS show for the first time since I’ve become so involved in stamp collecting. Be certain to attend the club meeting on August 1st to hear Richard Clever’s presentation on Tannu Tuva. Many of us had stamps from this “lost land” in our childhood collections. I know I had a few and so did Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman who wrote a book on his adventures in visiting this isolated land near Nepal. The summer social season starts with the WESTPEX committee hosting its volunteer appreciation brunch on Sunday August 5th for all of us who worked the show. RSVP to Judy Jarvis if you’re going. Don’t miss our annual club picnic with all our friends in the postcard club. It will be a lot of fun with postcards and possibly some stamps for sale. RSVP to Mary-Ann Stanfield and coordinate what you’re bringing for the potluck. The stamp and postcard clubs will provide the main course (not yet decided). Please make an effort to attend and bring that special someone in your life. Next on the schedule is the big 4 day STAMPSHOW in Sacramento opening on Thursday August 16th. I’m anxious to see the grand award winners from the 2011 WPS shows around the country. A stamp bourse is coming to Napredak Hall on the weekend of September 1st – 2nd. This is a great chance to see your favorite local dealers. We have our usual meeting on September 5th and still trying to confirm a speaker. We will be starting a series of discussions on exhibiting. I’ve lined up an interesting guest speaker for our club the meeting on September 19th. Bob Bortfeld from Vintages in Los Gatos to talk about “Jazzing Up Your Exhibits Using Mixed Media.” I’ve gotten to know Bob over the last year from visiting his store and perusing the eclectic items for sale including some interesting covers and postcards. His shop is at 130C N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos. You can read his blog “Postmark” at: http://www.vintageslg.blogspot.com/ There’s something on the schedule for everyone. I hope you’ll be able to attend at least a few of these events. Please invite your friends to join us. Growth is critical to the viability of this club. With this itinerary of activities, there are plenty of opportunities to invite guests to join us. I look forward to meeting them. With this being said, it would be nice if some of you shared ideas.

L ast January a very interesting item joined my playing card related postcard collection. It was

titled “ Teddy’s Trump” and shows a hand of cards with pictures of people unknown to me at the time. The Angel has a banner with the inscription: “Portsmouth September 5th, 3:47 pm 1905” The Bell has a banner with the inscription: “Old Paul Revere Bell 1812-1905 Old North Church Portsmouth N.H. “ The artist of this card was Hans Dreher and it was printed by the Rotograph Co. of New York. My curiosity was awakened and I sure wanted to find out more.

At first sight I supposed it had something to do with President Roosevelt but that date and the link with Portsmouth didn’t ring a bell, though it was clearly there! So I “Googled” it and found out it had to do with the signing of a Peace treaty. Through the internet I got in contact with the Portsmouth Athenaeum and told them about the card I have. Soon after I received a most friendly reply from their Research Librarian Carolyn Marvin: “The postcard is indeed one published to celebrate the signing of the peace treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War (September 5, 1905). “President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt orchestrated the peace conference which was held at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The primary envoys from the concerned nations were, from left to right in your card: Czar Nicholas the II; Sergius Witte; Baron Roman Rosen; Japanese Mikado (Emperor) Meiji; Japanese Foreign Minister Jutaro Komura; Togoro Takahira. These were the principals involved in peace negotiations. President Roosevelt’s image appears on the thumb. “The Old North Church is located in the center of Market Square in Portsmouth. However, the Paul Revere Bell was not located there. It was at St. John’s Church and it rang at 3:47 p.m. when the treaty was signed. So you have a unique card in that it includes an error!” Well Teddy sure had a winning hand as one year later the 1906 Noble Peace Prize was awarded to …Theodore Roosevelt!

A Divided Nation? How very American of us. As we commemorated the 236th anniversary

of our Declaration of Independence, revisiting our history helps remind us how far we've come—and just what still makes up the American character. For one thing, not all the 18th-century colonialists were keen on this whole independence thing: A good half-million were Loyalists to the British crown, and hung on to their royal connections in places like New York City, Long Island, and northern Georgia through the 1780s. The Fourth of July is also a good time to give credit where credit's due, stamp out a few myths, and find out lesser-known truths that are even juicier than the folklore.

Neglected forefather? No argument—founding fathers Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams have name recognition (it helps that two became president). Lost in historical footnotes are the remaining members of the Committee of Five in charge of drafting the Declaration: Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston. And, even more neglected, is the man who first proposed the motion for a breakout from Britain. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was the classical yeoman farmer and a justice of the peace. The Virginia-born aristocrat benefited from an English private school education. At first an "indifferent figure," he later rose to the radical occasion and became an admired orator who, according to Patrick Henry, "reasoned well, and declaimed freely and splendidly" with a "deep and melodious" voice. At the second Continental Congress, he put forth the motion to cut maternal ties with Britain. "That these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown; and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved... Let this happy day give birth to an American republic." ("Lives of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence," 1856, via Colonial Hall) As it was his proposal, Lee would have been chair of the Committee of Five and its likely scribe, but his wife’s illness called him away. His sub: Jefferson.

Irises by OgataIrises by OgataIrises by OgataIrises by Ogata----KorinKorinKorinKorin

O gata-Korin (1655-1716) lived in Kyoto. He studied both of the Kano-ha and the Tosa-ha,

schools of the art of painting. As is by other works, he was a great artist. Furthermore, he was such an authority on the art of lacquerware that he worked out the Korin moyo (designs) and the Korin Maki-e (gold or silver lacquer), as they are called. Thus he contributed to the modern art of Japan.

The picture below represents his ink-case with a sketch of Yatsohashi in gold lacquer, one of his masterpieces.

It is approximately 7 3/4” wide, 10 3/4” deep and 5 3/8” high, and is divided into two sections: upper and lower. The upper is a receptacle for a case containing a water-holder for an ink slab, and the lower one is intended for use as a receptacle for stationery. The theme of the design was taken from the ode composed by Arihara-Narihira in ancient times when he got to Yatsuhashi in Mikawa Province on his way to Azuma, now known as the Kanto District. The bridge drawn in the center of the ink-case is made of lead, the stems and leaves of the irises are of gold lacquer and the petals are of blue shells. The interior is gold-lacquered in the wave–line design. The case is such a gorgeous one and is said to be one of the greatest masterpieces that are now in existence. As mentioned, the picture of the Yatsuhashi Bridge is based on the legend telling of Arihara-Narihira. He was the fifth son to Prince Aho, son of Emperor Heizei. Having been given the family name of Arihara, he was descended to the status of a subject and was commissioned to the post of Lt. General in the Imperial Guards.

The receptacle for stationery. The receptacle for stationery. The receptacle for stationery. The receptacle for stationery.

He was a representative man in the Heian Era when the aristocratic circles led their gayest life. Put beside Ono-no-Komachi, a representative woman having both wit and beauty, he was lionized as a man having personal attractions, a genius for poetry and burning passion. Although he enjoyed such popularity, he did not continue to live in Kyoto, the then political center of Japan, as the Fujiwaras were at the peak of their power and his defiant attitude in the political life was obstructed by their iron will. He, therefore, was determined to make an escaping journey to the Kanto District. Thus his famous “Journey down to the East” was realized.

The Ise-Monogatari gives an account of Narihira’s journey to the East, that’s a poetic story narrating the then hapless but beautiful life of Narihira and containing some of his poems showing his poetic talent. It comprises two volumes, 126 chapters. The author is given as unknown, but it is generally accepted that it was originally written by Narihira, and edited by someone afterwards. The Ise-Monogatari begins with the passage “Once there was a man who abandoned Kyo (Kyoto), having taken for granted that he had no work to do there and started for Azuma (the Kanto District) to look for some place to settle.” The story continues, ”He got to a place called Yatsuhashi in the Province of Mikawa. That place is named Yatsuhashi, likely because there are numerous riverlets spanned with eight (yatsu) bridges (hashi). In the shadow of a tree by a swamp, he took a dried lunch he carried with him, when he saw irises in bloom in the swamp. There was something very appealing about them, whereupon he composed a poem.” The Korin’s masterpiece depicting that scene is now kept at the Tokyo National Museum. The irises in that picture, those on the ink-case, which are reproduced on the 500-yen postage stamp and those on a golden folding-screen, all those irises painted by Korin are descriptive of those found at Yatsuhashi in the Narihira legend.

Stamp OdditiesStamp OdditiesStamp OdditiesStamp Oddities

T here are any number of errors, freaks and oddities among common U.S. stamps, and a

number of them will be showcased here. The Postal Service issued a 29¢ commemorative stamp, Scott 2616, on January 24, 1992, in Rosemont, Illinois. The issue focused attention on World Columbian Expo '92, an international stamp show that took place there in May to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's historic voyage. The design is a stamp-on-stamp motif that features a portion of the 15¢ Landing of Columbus stamp originally issued in 1869, Scott 118. Designed by Richard Sheaff, the stamps were printed in the offset/intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The stamp has a small flaw in the ‘a’ of May. It is very common as a number of them appear on the same pane of stamps. I don’t know if they are on only one pane of a press sheet or on others.

The damaged ‘a’ of The damaged ‘a’ of The damaged ‘a’ of The damaged ‘a’ of May as indicated.May as indicated.May as indicated.May as indicated.

This was a joint issue with Russia, Scott 6080-83.

A somewhat more elusive flaw is the missing curly cue on the sleigh stamp of the 1988 Christmas issue, Scott 2400. I’ve found a couple panes with this flaw but in over 20 years of searching I’ve found only two covers with this flawed stamp.

On the Marilyn Monroe issue of June 1, 1995, Scott 2967, the perforation at the corners were shapes as stars. One perforating pin just ‘kissed’ the paper, making a mark but not going through.

There are numerous imperf errors and paper folds that are not addressed here, as well as more well know flaws such as the ‘Korpa’ flaw of the Korean flag on the ‘Overrun Countries’ issue of 1943-44, Scott 921. Neither have I addressed any color errors or inverts, of which there’s a number. Rather, I have shown what I believe are lesser known EFOs, that, while they’ve been reported in the philatelic press, are mostly forgotten. Some of these flaws have been identified in the Scott Catalogues, many years after the fact, and some have not been included in Scott yet. Finding these EFOs commercially used on cover can be a real chore. I search many hundreds of covers monthly and yet most are yet to be found by me—but they have to be out there somewhere and I still hope to find them??? Perhaps I’m the eternal optimist and will never find them all—in the meantime I’m having a great time looking.

Another fairly common plate flaw is the so-called fuel hose on the Space Accomplishments issue, Scott 2631-34, issued May 29, 1992. As far as I know, the flaw is on only one stamp in a press sheet, and is on Scott 2633; as shown below.

This months offering is a very well executed fraud—bogus from the get-go! The only genuine part about it is the fact that it is an envelope—beyond that it’s just another clever forgery out of the Far East. One must be very careful when purchasing any type of collectable today as so many are being produced—especially in People’s Republic of China—to deceive and part one from their money. Any unusual or potentially valuable item should be verified by someone knowledgeable in the area of the item you want to buy. And, yes, I know this is not always possible, in which case you should past the item by. And that is, also, often times very difficult to do for a serious collector of nearly anything.
