About Me
• Studying Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London
• ICE QUEST Scholar
• Previous work placement in 2012 with Atkins Oil & Gas
316 September 2015
The Problem• Culvert base designed to be
constructed over an existing brick sewer
• Atkins asked to calculate strain resulting from unloading above the sewer
• This will determine whether design is compliant with Thames Water guidelines

Input• Ground conditions below level of sewer using
information extracted from nearby boreholes and trial pits
• Uniformly distributed load to represent the ground above
• Unloading of ground for culvert• Analysis line to represent sewer
Output• Soil displacements

Seanet ProUsing Seanet, I was able to simultaneously watch sonar and video footage of the Riber Tunnel for Severn Trent Water.• Looking for any major problems
that would need immediate action

Calculating reinforcement densities• Converting reinforcement into kg/m from mm2/m for top and
bottom tensile and shear for each section of the tunnel (invert, roof slap, side walls and central wall)

HS2 Amersham Shaft• Given plan and section views of the shaft,
I was asked to create a 3D model using SketchUp software
• Then able to convert these back into 2D by taking section cuts, and accurately dimension the drawings
• My first experience using 3D modelling software.

Inspection Report• Typing up the report• Compiling and captioning the relevant
photos

Victoria Station Upgrade
Comparison of technical drawings• Locating most recent and previous
drawings to compare them and identify changes
Changes to reinforcement densities• Comparing drawings to identify changes to
the reinforcement bars

East/West Link UnderpassPossibility of Atkins involvement in the design and construction of a tunnel underneath a rail line to link the new Imperial campus to Latimer Road.
I was involved in the• Cover letter• Organisation chart• Delivery of tender to Imperial College
London

We were taken down to the tunnels via the main shaft and shown• precast concrete running tunnels• 1st stage concrete (part of the track slab which is
constructed in the invert of the running tunnels) • cross passage which connects the running tunnels

Technical SkillsLearnt to use various new pieces of software including• Oasys Pdisp• Seanet• SketchUp
And have also improved my Microsoft Excel skills.
• Insight into what a career in civil engineering will be like
• Better time management
• Understanding of the importance of teamwork + communication
• Different stages of a project- tender (Imperial West); design (HS2; VSU); construction (Crossrail); maintenance (DLR)
