Geometry for Sewickley Academy Credit
(Grades 9-12)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of algebra I, including mastery of radical expressions. Students will
explore both Euclidean and solid geometries, with emphasis on plane geometry. Topics will include:
logic and proofs, polygons, perimeter and area, surface area and volume, and similar shapes (ratio and
9
proportion). Lessons and homework assignments will challenge students to apply these concepts,
developing both inductive and deductive logical reasoning skills. Students will earn one credit towards
Senior School graduation through successful completion of this five-week course.
This course will be taught using the flipped classroom approach. Students will need a valid email
account. Part of the student’s homework will be to watch and take notes on online lessons. Class time
will be used for expanding upon the online lessons by participating a variety of activities, which will
include hands on activities, individual, and group work. Please note: The instructor will post videos for
every lesson but not all lessons will be taught using the flipped method. Some of the videos are there
simply as a resource and for students that miss class.
Visiting students are responsible for verifying that credit for the course will be accepted by their own
schools.
Vacations/missed class: The instructor is making videos to go with every lesson. Students that miss a
class should watch these videos to help them learn the material they missed. If a student needs to a
miss a class due to a vacation, they should inform the instructor before the course begins. Students that
miss class are still responsible for all tests and homework.
Withdrawal/refund policy: In order to cover an entire year of Geometry in 5 weeks (24 classes) the
course moves at a fast pace. Teaching it using the flipped method will allow more time for student
questions in the class. Students that struggle in math may find the pace of this course challenging.
Students who formally withdrawal by the third day of class, will receive a 67% refund. After the third
day no refunds are given.
Dates: Starting Tuesday June 14 - July 20, 2016 (no classes June 30 - July 4) *Classes start on Tuesday, June 14 and thereafter will meet Monday through Friday.

(Grades 8-12)

discovery and insight rather than just a way to share what one already knows. Areas of focus will include developing specific and focused claims, incorporating and analyzing evidence, writing with style and verve, and learning to identify and correct pesky sentence-level errors. Each day students will complete a mini-essay, often in response to an AP-style prompt; students will then have the chance to revise their essay in response to the teacher's feedback. Taught by an experienced Senior School English teacher, this course will be useful to any students from Grades 8 - 12 who wish to improve their current level of writing.

Summer CHS Chemistry Course
This course covers the first four months of CHS Chemistry, and is specifically designed to cover the
portion of CHS Chemistry that students who participate in Swiss Semester in the fall will miss. In past
years, the course has covered the following topics:
1. Basic topics such as performing conversions, density, and observing chemical reactions, and
drawing particle diagrams to explain them
2. Basic properties, formulas, and nomenclature for ionic compounds
3. Writing and balancing chemical equations, and recognizing the five basic types of reactions
(including writing net ionic equations for single replacement and double displacement reactions)
4. Finding empirical formulas and molecular formulas for compounds
5. Calculations with moles and using balanced equations to calculate amounts of reactants and
products (stoichiometry)
6. Gas properties and gas laws
19
This list may be altered for this summer, since the order of topics may be changed at the CHS Summer
Meeting in June 2016. This list is a good estimate of the amount of topics to be covered. The course will
conclude with students sitting for the first CHS exam.
Please note: The class will meet for four hours per day for 10 days over a two week period to be
arranged, probably in August.
