Summer Camps

Alaska Youth Academy

Alaska Youth Academy program encourages youth to make positive life-choices that prepare them to enter the work force in Public Safety and related fields. Students will be working closely with Alaska State Troopers, Village Public Safety Officers, US Deputy Marshals and other public safety components. AYA students learn hands-on lessons in a wide variety of topics such as wilderness survival, CPR, First Aid, Fire Safety, Crime Scene Investigations, Defensive Tactics and responsible decision making.

Allied Health - High School Becoming a Healthcare Professional 1 credit Emergency Trauma Technician: First Responder 1 credit Standard First Aid and CPR .6 CEU

This camp is for high school students who will be entering 9th-12th grades in the fall of 2013. Students who are interested in learning more about a healthcare career will enjoy this exciting two weeks. This camp offers a college environment (students will stay in college dorms) and an introduction to a variety of health related professions including: Behavioral Health, Public Health, Medical Office, Nursing and many others. Students will take part in a hands-on training for Emergency Trauma Technician: First Responder Certification. Students will also earn their First Aid and CPR certifications through a standard 8-hour class. Tours of health care facilities are always a great experience, like playing with a ferret at the veterinary clinic or touring the local hospital. Students will also have the opportunity to become Junior Public Health Educators and participate in educating their peers about health related issues they are passionate about. It’s not all work, we play too! Campers will participate in a three day softball tournament as well as participate in many other activities such as “Frisbee Golf” and bonfires on the beach.

Construction Trades 2 credits

An introduction to construction trades, framing, drywall, plumbing, finish carpentry and the careers involved. After the camp, students will present to the Barrow community about their experiences on their service project. Students will also have math and English lessons as required under the grant to prepare for college entry.

Digital Media Exploring Digital Media 2 credits

An introduction to filmmaking and the careers involved. Students will study light, sound, scene prep, storyboarding, script writing and camera operation to direct their own short films that will be presented to the Barrow community. Students will also have math and English lessons as required under the grant to prepare for college entry.

Earth Science

This course, given by a scientist from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, offers an introduction to the world of Earth Sciences. Topics will include geology, geomorphology, climate change, glaciers, and permafrost and field measurements. The instructor is a field scientist with experience in working on glaciers in the mountains, in the Arctic and in the Antarctic as well as on the tundra of Barrow. Students will learn about the Earth, engage in discussions and take part in short field-trips in the tundra and on the beach to undertake sampling, field experiments and measurements of water and permafrost. Students will also take part in team, individual and strength challenges to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Allied Health - Middle School

This one week camp is designed for middle school students entering 6th-8th grades in the fall of 2013, who are interested in further developing healthy lifestyles. Students will stay in the Ilisagvik College dorms for the duration of the camp. Activities and topics will include: career exploration, identity development, nutrition, exercise, healthy relationships, teen coping skills, and cultural attunement along with many others. The relationship between goal setting and positive decisions will be stressed along with developing healthy habits. Evening activities will include movie nights, “Frisbee Golf” (along with other games), and arts & crafts projects.

Arctic Science ResearchHow to Become a Scientist in the Arctic .5 credits

This course offers an introduction to a variety of arctic science research topics. Students will tour science research facilities, speak with visiting scientists and local wildlife biologists, and assist with field work. Students will also learn methods and techniques used in scientific studies and design their own study that could be conducted in their home village. Successful students have the option to submit a report on the results of their study, present their work at a conference, and possibly travel to other research facilities.

Climate Change: Science in Cultural ContextChanging Permafrost on the North Slope 2 credits

During this summer program, the students will learn about weather, climate, ecology, carbon chemistry and air pollution, as well the physical impacts on permafrost. Also, students will be exposed to the place based and traditional knowledge on climate by learning the observations of local Elders. Information gained from this experience will help them to develop and enhance their personal understanding of the permafrost’s significant relationship and impact on their local villages/communities. Students will learn how to share their insights on a broader national and international platform though the use of technological tools such as the iPod touch, websites, webcasting, and social media applications.

Open to incoming 9th grade students through 12th grade. Students will be considered after review and formal application process.

Iñupiaq Land Use Values and Resources 3 credits

An overview of the core elements of the Iñupiaq worldview of their geography and ecosystem. Examination of the complex relationships of people with the land, ocean and natural resources will be an integral part of the course. Culturally proper behaviors in the treatment of the land and resources will be discussed including North Slope geography landmarks, Traditional Land Use Inventory, camps, hunting areas, animals of the area, place names, plants of the area, historic use, flora and fauna, hunting and subsistence. Demonstrations of appropriate uses of animals and other resources will be incorporated.

Native American Art and History 4 credits

This camp will provide students with a brief introduction to Native American history and art. The goal will be to help students understand the similarities and differences between the Native American culture and history as it developed in the lower 48 and that of Alaskan Natives. The centerpiece of the camp will be a trip to the American Southwest wherein students will attend a Powwow at the Institute of American Indian Arts and visit a number of sites in the region.

Photojournalism

This course offers an introduction to digital photography and related professions including: photo journalism, wildlife and nature photography, environmental conservation, and others. Students will learn how to use a digital SLR camera from a professional

photographer, taking part in hands on training by doing fieldwork in an area of choice, processing images through post-production programs, and displaying final project work in a public exhibition via prints or a slideshow. Students will work individually and in teams, and each student will get to keep their printed images from the exhibit.

Eider JourneyAn education and stewardship program run by the US Fish and Wildlife Service addressing conservation and management issues of the threatened North American breeding population of Steller’s eider ducks. Through classroom activities, fieldwork with biologists and follow-up activities, students develop an increased understanding of the needs of this species and the threats it faces. As a result of this experience, students are more likely to become informed decision-makers and stewards of our natural resources. This course is especially designed for those with an interest in wildlife and resource management practices.

Students must fill out a Fish and Wildlife application as well as register for the course at Ilisagvik College.
