OUT BOUND TRAINING AT

TIRUNELVELI

Our Tirunelveli zone had successfully conducted the Out Bound

Training (OBT) - Summer Camp for School Students of Avvai

Ashram, Sivasailam and Sarada College, Tirunelveli from 31st

April 2018 to 03rd May 2018. Nearly 100 school students

participated from 8th to 12th Standard.

The Outbound training program is aimed at helping participants

understand critical elements of Leadership and Team Building.

These qualities are more effectively developed in an experiential

setting than through classroom training.

The students enjoyed

all the activities such

as archery, ping pong

ball, Dragon tail, yoga

etc. They have

learned the activities

of Rope climbing,

Broken bridge, Tent making, Camp fire, Ladder bridge crossing,

etc.,

School management conveyed their gratitude to Redington

Foundation for conducting such an amazing camp for their

students which is totally a different ballgame for the students.

Introduction:-

2018 Summer Camps Sponsored by Foundation for CSR @

Redington with associated schools started in the last week of

April 2018.

This is an exciting summer camp for the school students to learn

and gain knowledge and to develop skills at this period of time.

Our organisation is dedicated to promote and develop education

to eradicate illiteracy among the youth. To create interest and

perform well in academics an extra mile has to be taken from our

part.

”Time and tide waits for no man”. Time spent productively will

help in delivering productive results. It will help in developing

skills, accumulation of knowledge and also help a person sustain

independently and efficiently in this competitive world. Instead of

using the spare time productively, most of the students vile away

their time. To address this issue and also to use the spare time

effectively, the foundation has come up with the program known

as ‘SUMMER SPLASH’

Proposed Activities for Summer Splash:-

Yoga

Yoga is a low cost and helpful practice that can bring positive

impact on students lifestyle. Children deal with many distractions,

temptations, overstimulation and peer pressure. Yoga will abolish

all the above mentioned problems with regular practice.

It also develops internal awareness on physical body, manage

stress through breathing techniques and meditation. It builds

concentration, confidence and positive self image and it can also

act as an alternative solution for tuning out the students from the

constant attachment to electronic device such as smart phones

etc.

Communication and Public Speaking

Communication skill can improve self-knowledge and self

perception because self-knowledge comes to us

through communication. Learning Communication skill can

improve how we see others, as communication is the way we

meet others, develop and manage relationships and work

effectively with others. Without communication skills - the ability

to progress in the working environment and in personal life would

be nearly impossible. Public speaking is one of the

most important and most dreaded form of communication. Some

of the major benefits of communication and public speaking are

as follows:

•Brings out the hidden talents of the students

•Develop skills to survive in the competitive world

•Develops better communication, logical and reasoning skills

•Increases their confidence and positive self-image

Sports (Indoor Games)

Indoor games has its own value and importance. Playing indoor

games teaches a kid to invite other children to participate in the

game and creates bond with peers. Children also learn to bond

with older and younger siblings through indoor games, thereby

they learn to share and play fairly. Giving the kid an opportunity

to play indoor games helps them to be happy with what they have

and they do not get cranky if the weather is bad. Some of the

amazing benefits of Indoor Games are as follows:

Creates opportunity to spend time together / socialize

Enhances Memory formation and cognitive skills

Coordination and dexterity

Fine Arts

Where have the arts in education gone? Over the past several

years we’ve all seen the trend of schools cut down the arts from

their curriculum. Arts are not only fun for kids but it also help kids

to develop on many fundamental levels.

It develops creativity

It improves academic performance

Develops a Child’s fine motor skills

Improves confidence and Visual learning

Helps in thinking out of box and decision making

Conclusion:-

The major impact of this program is - it develops social stability

and improves skills for the students in various standards to

sustain in this competitive world. The resource persons are hired

based on experience and passion towards their work and to share

their knowledge among the student community. Summer camps

will be regularly monitored and evaluated in the course of time.

Electronic Waste Awareness and Collection:-

e -waste awareness session is given to the students to educate

about the environment, personal responsibility, community

action, sustainability and natural resource management. E-waste

recycling helps the school reputation and conserve environment.

Collecting e-waste from the students and awarding them will

motivate the students to utilise new products from old

electronics.

English language learning for deaf students - Supported by

Foundation for CSR @ Redington

Background

One out of every 1000 children in India is born deaf. The impact of

this disability is accentuated due to late diagnoses, as it severely

limits language acquisition during the crucial early years (2 to 7

years) of development. Delay in diagnosis and early intervention

means that very few deaf children go on to acquire oral language

skills (through intensive Oralism based language therapy

harnessing residual hearing and also using lip reading,

mimicking mouth shapes etc.). With limited sign language based

medium of education, majority of deaf children are deprived of the

opportunity to learn a language in their early years.

For most of the deaf children their first opportunity to learn a

language is when they interact with their peers at school (after 5

years of age), and ultimately rely on local sign language as means

of expression & communication. Without a fully developed first

language – spoken language cannot be acquired due to deafness

and sign language cannot be acquired due to lack of exposure -

learning how to read and write English becomes an almost

impossible task for a large number of deaf children.

The ability to read and write in a language is the key skill for

expansion of knowledge based on content in that language. Even

when study materials in English may be available, inability to

comprehend materials in English language makes learning from

such books and content very difficult to comprehend for deaf

children.

The end result of the challenge in comprehending English is that

despite same level of cognitive abilities, deaf children lag far

behind in education attainment. Not only does this act as an

impediment in accessing written content (both printed and in

digital forms) but it also limits access to jobs and the socio-

economic integration that comes with joining the formal

workforce.

The team at Foundation for CSR@ Redington has been in

conversation with the staff at Shanthi School for the Deaf in Siva

Sailam in Tenkasi District. During its early visits and interaction

with students of Shanthi School the team at Foundation for CSR

@ Redington found that students used natural/ native signs and

very few of them knew alphabets/ words in English. CSR

Foundation at Redington was aware of v-shesh’s work in teaching

English language to Deaf students and decided to support by

rolling out a programme in Shanthi School for Deaf as part of its

REACH programme.

This programme was formally launched by the Trustee of

Redington Foundation during the academic year 2014 - 2015. The

programme started with a baseline assessment of participating

students by way of personal interactions using sign language and

assessment using ASER instrument. This survey confirmed that

students had limited exposure and knowledge of English

language which was evident in a very small number of students

of class 7,8 and 9 being able to recognise words (with a maximum

4 alphabets).

Based on the enthusiastic responses from students and teachers

at Shanthi School, CSR Foundation @ Redington decided to

support an abbreviated version of the programme at St Louis

School for the Deaf and Blind, Chennai.

Since the launch of REACH in September 2015, deaf students at

both schools now

Use consistent sign language to communicate with each other

Have developed a vocabulary of words in English language

that they can read, write and understand and use consistent

signs for communicating with other students

Can now enact skits, funny demo or drama using sign

language

In higher classes, majority of students are learning

grammatical topics like Noun, Verb, Adjective, Article, To-be

Verbs, Pronouns and making sentences under these

parameters.

Can read simple storybooks on their own

Express their thoughts or respond to basic questions in

writing or sign language

Can engage better with teachers in English to seek

clarifications or answers to the doubts

REACH programme is helping to lay the foundation for these

students to learn English language, gain confidence and

transcend the barriers for communicating independently.
